About 120 people turned out May 18 to see the youngest racers in Jefferson County.

The Rhododendron Festival Trike Race is the only time 3-year-olds are allowed to “drive” on Water Street, and kids, families and spectators enjoyed the show.

Sunrise Rotary Club sponsored the event, always an attraction for the younger set eager to test their three- and four-wheelers. Every participant received a ribbon. The top finishers are:

Joseph Gray achieves 6th Rhody victory, Jamie Cheever wins her 1st

Joseph Gray won his sixth Rhody Run, and in the women’s division, Jamie Cheever won her first on Sunday in Port Townsend.

The Jefferson Healthcare Rhody Run XXXVIII took off May 22 with a few raindrops at start time, yet it was dry for the rest of the 12K course, and cool the whole time.

There were 1,727 finishers; last year, there were 1,604.

Gray, age 32, was first to finish the 12K race in 36 minutes and 28 seconds (chip time), followed by Drew Polley, 30 (37:55); defending champion Craig Leon, 31 (38.25); Andrew Wise, 21 (38.53); and Nathaniel Richards, 23 (39.49).

Uzi Stilted, 44, who also has won six men’s division titles, finished eighth (40:17).

For the women, Jamie Cheever, 29, won the division (42:44) and was in 11th place overall. Second place in the division was claimed

by Emma Polley, 25 (43:11) and 13th overall, followed by defending champion Jul Accurst, 23 (43:22); Ruth Perkins, 35 (43:46); and Janet Levitt, 42 (44:36), 18th overall.

Gray and Cheever were on the Port Townsend Marathon Association’s list of elite runners expected to attend; the Volleys of Mill Creek, Washington, were not.

The record for the most all-time Rhody Run victories belongs to Kim Jones with 13. The course records were not challenged in 2016: Fastest finishes were 36:08 by Michael Layman in 1986 for males, and 41:10 by Kim Jones in 1991 for females.

before exiting Fort Worden and stretching his advantage to finish first in 36:28 (chip time), almost one and a half minutes over Drew Polley.

Gray, 32, now a Colorado resident, previously won in five consecutive years (2009-2013).

“I tried to stay on the pace I wanted to hit today, and focus on what I could do for myself,” he said.

“The course was a little slick in places, and it really only hurt us the last 4 or 4.5 miles.”

After a two-year absence, Gray said, “It’s really special for me to come out here. Port Townsend is super energetic, and the crowd is really into the race. It’s nice to have that excitement when you’re coming into the finish area.”

Gray, who runs for Club Northwest, plans to compete in mountain races up to 50K during the remainder of the year.

CHEEVER IN CHARGE On the women’s side, Jamie Cheever of Seattle took charge in the early stages to finish almost a half-minute ahead of Emma Polley and 11th overall in 42:44. Polley was on her heels at the 2-mile mark; Cheever pushed ahead as the course continued.

The 29-year-old former University of Minnesota Gopher and current Club Northwest runner said she hadn’t been to this area before and didn’t know what to expect.

“I just went out pretty fast, and it was really fun to just kind of go along the back roads. There’s a beautiful part through the forest on the rolling hills. It was a truly Grand Parade

The 81st Rhododendron Festival’s Grand Parade featured 104 entries, and an appreciative crowd that turned out in spite of the morning rainfall.

Thousands of chairs, benches and other seating accommodations left out for days to reserve prime viewing space along the Lawrence, Monroe and Water streets route may have gotten a little wet, but the rain stopped just prior to the parade’s 1 p.m. start, so umbrellas were put away, and smiles came out.

Thanks to many people who make the parade possible, and for all the participants who came from near and far to be part of Rhody Fest tradition.

Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

A team of Port Townsend High School students ended the East Jefferson Fire Rescue team’s three-year winning streak in the Rhododendron Festival Bed Race.

The last time that happened was

in 2012, when just two teams entered.

Similarly, three teams raced this year, with members of the PTHS Youth Entertainment Coalition winning the day.

EJFR took the Most Spirited award,

and the QFC team took Best Bribe.

The PTHS team included bed rider Jack Pickard together with bed pushers David Hoglund, Patrick Charlton and brothers Austin and Keegan Khile.

By a hair: Royalty select best in hair, beard contest Bearded men, long-haired ladies and crazyhaired kids stepped up Friday to put their unique ‘dos to the test.

Rhododendron Festival Royalty judges tugged on beards and measured lengthy locks to find the best in each category, then bestowed the winners with prizes supplied by local businesses.
