HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A Drawing Room in the Gothic style – 1850 Both the furniture and the

Historical Reference

In France throughout the 12th century the Romanesque style gave rise to Gothic architecture Eventually in the 15th and 16th centuries the Renaissance style took its place The 18th century saw a resurgence of Gothic architecture which was used in both conventional churches and mansions and castles

When Abbot Suger Louis VI s counselor chose to rebuild the Basilica Saint Denis he popularized the style which had its origins in France during his reign The goal was to illuminate structures with the idea that they were a mirror of God It wasn't recognized to as Gothic until much later when the style was despised and associated with the Goths a group of people who brutally demolished ancient structures after capturing Rome

Designers and masons put a lot of effort into creating their masterpieces In fact it took well over a century to finish some of these Gothic structures so the original laborers would never see them through to completion

One famous example of this architectural style is the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris During King Louis VII's reign the cathedral's construction got underway in 1163 and wasn't finished until 1345 Remarkably one of the three original great rose windows still has its original glass from the 13th century The Basilica of St Denis outside of Paris is the oldest building that demonstrates every aspect of Gothic design The fact that numerous French kings and queens are buried here attests to the cathedral s significance

Design Statement for Designed Space

My concept for this design project arose from my fascination with the Gothic Revival architecture seen in many cathedrals I took inspiration from the Palladian windows in particular For the overall dining room layout I chose to keep a very traditional approach for a six-person dining table centered in front of the large window The finishes on the walls ceilings and floor vary but they all keep the traditional French aesthetic in a typical modern Château dining room Overall I focused on a more contemporary approach to the Gothic Revival style and French style which in turn made a very harmonious dining space

architecture featured Gothic’s ‘pointed arch The rich colours and textures used in the style are not visible when seen in black and white

RITUAL OBJECT

The thought of having a space in ones home to practice their own personal daily ritual such as prayer, exercise, making coffee, etc is a necessity for most My client, Claire Semperfi, asked for a space where she could wake up and walk outside her room into a tranquil space where she could practice her daily ritual of making her morning tea In this space I wanted to embody the feeling of practicing the ritual of getting up every morning and taking time to relax and meditate while enjoying tea. With this Sacred Object (Sereni-Tea) the user is able to create a designated space with in a space feeling in the comfort in their own home

THE START

Parti model and sketches

My desire to create a space that seems more than just an office i what inspired my design concept for the Dallas studio/office Fo instance I wanted to create a setting that embodied a relaxing welcoming creative, and motivating atmosphere that would make going to work less of a duty and more of a joy.

I want my design to be recalled by both staff and guests for its organization, comfort, and inspiring design. I envision the design team and office staff as actually feeling at home and looking forward to coming into work each day

LOGO & BESPOKE

PIECE DEVELOPMENT

For this project I was tasked with making a bespoke piece for the client. I chose to make a custom receptionist desk with a custom logo design. Below here are the goals and values that the client wanted to keep in mind for the design concept, which are embodied throughout the overall space.
