VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Tailored to individuals who prefer practical learning, our vocational courses equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to advance in a specific industry or profession.

Your vocational course forms a crucial component of your comprehensive study programme at college, which includes work experience, tutorial support and English and maths, if deemed necessary. These courses aim to provide you with transferable skills that enable you to transition into various industries, pursue higher education or secure a higher level apprenticeship.

WHAT LEVEL WHAT LEVEL WOULD I START AT?

There are three main levels of vocational courses. The level you start at depends on your previous qualifications. After completing one level, you may then be able to progress on to a higher level to further your education.

14

ENGLISH & MATHS

If you hold a grade 4 or higher in either of these subjects, there will be opportunities to extend your numeracy and literacy skills in context.

15

WHAT ARE T-LEVELS?

T-Levels are technical qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels. They are designed to give learners a route to university or industry that combines academic study with an industry placement so that you can relate what you study to the profession you hope to work in. You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a placement (315 hours minimum) to give you the skills and knowledge employers are looking for. Your T-Level will help you to step straight into your chosen career, an apprenticeship, higher technical qualification or a degree.

WHO ARE T-LEVELS FOR?

T-Levels are ideal for post-GCSE students who want to get into a skilled job.

16

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT T-LEVELS?

T-Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses and will provide the skills and knowledge needed to progress to highly skilled employment, higher level study or an apprenticeship. All T-Levels include an industry placement with an employer so that students can apply their learning in a real workplace environment. Your industry placement is an invaluable opportunity to make a positive contribution, as well as

develop the skills and behaviours required in the profession. Around 80% of time will be spent in the classroom with the remaining 20% being spent on placement. This differs to an apprenticeship, which is typically 80% on the job and 20% in the classroom and is more suited to those who feel ready to enter the workforce at 16. T-Levels are a technical and academic alternative to A Levels.

T-Levels will primarily prepare students to move into a skilled job, but can also lead to further technical training, such as higher technical qualifications, higher apprenticeships or a degree if you don’t want to move straight into work. A T-Level can be used for UCAS points, with a starred distinction at T-Level worth the equivalent of 168 UCAS points (the same as three A Levels at A*).

Once you have applied for a course online, you will be invited to an interview. Interview evenings take place once a month.

During this interview, you will meet your subject teacher for your chosen course and will discuss with them your predicted grades, what you will study and you can ask them any questions you may have.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE I HAVE BEEN OFFERED A PLACE?

Once you’ve been offered a place, you will receive confirmation via email. You will also be invited in for a taster day closer to the summer to get you ready for your next steps. Over the summer, you will be provided with an information pack with details about the start of the academic year, travel and finance and all the things you need to provide on your first day.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE MY COURSE AND HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This varies from course to course. Most courses will last for one year and at level 3 you have the option to study for two years to gain the equivalent of three A-levels. The HNC and HND courses are one-year each and you can go on to do a ‘top-up’ year at University. You may be assessed on practical work, coursework, portfolio, a Final Major Project (FMP), examination or group presentation in some cases.

DO I HAVE TO PAY ANY FEES?

If you are aged 16-18 years, our tuition fees are free. Extra payments may be required for course materials, uniform, travel and equipment (dependant on the course) and other items such as trips and visits, but this will all be explained when you apply for the course. Financial support will be available to help with these costs, subject to household income. Students can also access free meals up to £3.50 daily on receipt of a successful financial assistance application, which is included within the student ID card and can be used at our on-site café and refectory.
