FROM PUB TO PULPIT ST THOMAS CHURCH KENDAL

CUMBRIA FESTIVAL CHORUS; AD LIB; BROOMDASHER

Saturday 17 June 2023 7.30 pm

Cumbria Festival Chorus was formed in 2016 from an amalgamation of Cumbria Choral Initiative (formed in 2000 to extend the already lively choral scene in South Cumbria and to include regular orchestral and choral concerts – Belshazzar’s Feast, War Requiem, Dvorak Stabat Mater, Beethoven Missa Solemnis etc - workshops, training days and an annual New Year’s Eve Come and Sing event) with the 100+year-old Mary Wakefield Festival.

Since its formation CFC has continued the work of both organisations and performed The Dream of Gerontius, A Sea Symphony, Intimations of Immortality, the Berlioz Te Deum and Elijah. The chorus is drawn from all over the North-West of England

Conductor and Musical Director: Ian Jones

Organ: Andy Plowman

Tonight some 45 members of the Chorus will sing Vaughan Williams’ arrangements of:

The Dark-Eyed Sailor a typical ‘broken token’ song and found in many versions

The Springtime of the Year where in typical folk-song fashion the narrator overhears the conversation of two lovers

The Turtle Dove In which the departing lover promises to his girl that he will only prove unfaithful if ‘the seas run dry’ and ‘the rocks melt in the sun’

AdLib

is an acappella folksong quartet based in the South Lakes

They will sing:

Sheep Shearing Song arranged by Judith Bush

This was collected in 1904 from William King in Somerset by Cecil Sharp, who wrote ‘I would commend this song to the notice of those who think that no good music can proceed from a tavern.’ Vaughan Williams included the song in a cantata for women’s voices

Folk Songs of the Four Seasons

All Things are Quite Silent arranged by Sarah Morgan. Vaughan Williams collected this song in Sussex from Ted Baines in 1904.

An Acre of Land arranged by Paul Sartin

Many different versions of this song have been collected in various parts of England. This one was collected from Frank Bailey in Wiltshire by Vaughan Williams in 1904. It is also included in his cantata Folk Songs of the Four Seasons
