Lutheran Church of the Resurrection

Fa l l 2 0 1 6

Over the summer we dove deep into the ten discipleship practices of Resurrection Life. Discipleship is a lifelong journey and these practices help us to Know we are loved by God, Grow in our relationships with Jesus and one another, and Go into the world in the name of Jesus Christ. If you missed any of the sermon series, please take time in the weeks ahead to watch them at LCRmarietta.org/sermons This catalog covers the ministries and programs happening in the life of our congregation for the remainder of 2016. Many will be familiar to some and some will be new to all of us. To help align our faith formation with Resurrection Life, each item is tagged with the practice(s) it relates to. There are opportunities to explore Baptism, Bible Today, Communion, Affirming Baptism, Discernment, Daily Discipleship, Weekly Worship, Regular Small Group, Annual Pilgrimage and Growing Generosity sprinkled across the life of our congregation. This fall, challenge yourself and your family to Know more, Grow deeper and Go farther.

Discipleship Acts Wednesdays at 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 14 Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 15 Led by Pastor Dave Helfrich 1st century Christians faced the same challenges and opportunities as we do in the 21st century. The book of Acts tells their story though three main themes: the mighty acts of God, telling the story of those mighty acts, and the responses we might expect as a result of telling those stories. In reading Acts together, we will learn not only about their journey of faith but ours as well.

Love, Skip, Jump by Shelene Bryan Wednesdays at 9 a.m. beginning Sept. 14 Led by Margaret Perry, Faith Walkers By loving how our Creator made us to love, skipping comfort and safety to help those who can never repay us, and taking a risk to jump into the epic journey God has for our lives, we are all just one yes away from changing everything. The Faith Walkers will be studying these devotions as they walk the trails of the Chattahoochee river, meeting at the Columns Drive lot.

The Divine Drama by Harry Wendt Sundays at 11 a.m. in Conference Room beginning Sept. 18 Led by Dan Gilroy, Co-Ed Sunday School Over 10 weeks we will study the Old Testament from Genesis to the birth of the Messiah. $10 book fee. 14

The Forgotten God by Francis Chan Sundays at 8:15 a.m. in Conference Room beginning Sept. 18 Led by George Logan Pastor Francis Chan offers a compelling invitation to understand, embrace, and follow the Holy Spirit’s direction in our lives. In the name of the Father, the Son, and … the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of all three, but how often do we live with an awareness of only the first two? As Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit -the Helper- so that we could be true and living witnesses for Christ. $10 book fee.

The Lost World of Adam & Eve by John H. Walton Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in the Conference Room beginning Oct. 2 Led by Ed Abesicher, Contemporary Religious Thought Group Who were the historical Adam and Eve? What if we've been reading Genesis and its claims regarding material origins wrong? In what cultural context was this couple, this garden, this tree, and this serpent portrayed? John Walton explores the ancient Near Eastern context of Genesis 2–3, creating space for a faithful reading of Scripture along with full engagement with science for a new way forward in the human origins debate. $10 book fee.

Sermon Talk Sundays at 9:45 a.m. beginning Sept. 18 Led by Ingrid Noerenberg in Room 6, Parents & Guardians Led by Richard Leon in Choir Room, Empty Nesters These groups will reflect on the Sermon Talk questions from Pastor Dave or Pastor Stephen each week and connect them to our lives, our stories and our world.

The advent season begins with the First Sunday in Advent on November 27 and continues for four weeks until Christmas day.

Travel the Highways of Advent by Stan Purdum “On the church calendar, the liturgical year begins with Advent, which starts four Sundays before Christmas Day. On the street, however, the weeks leading up to December 25 are the ‘Christmas season’ for which Christmas music, both secular and sacred, is the soundtrack.” Advent doesn’t have a primary theme in the way other seasons of the church do, which can leave it overshadowed. A season of preparation isn’t nearly as glamorous as a season of celebration. Our church-wide study this Advent invites us to travel the Highways of Reversal, In-Between Places, Enthusiasm and Merriment. We will study the “here” of our everyday lives and arrive to the “there” of Christmas, having encountered God along the way. There will be opportunities for individual and group study. $8.50 book fee. > Bible Today, Discernment, Annual Pilgrimage

Advent Projects During the season of Advent, LCR provides opportunities to support families in our community and across the globe. Please consider incorporating these into your family’s Advent traditions. The Brumby Tree: November 30-December 4 Purchase needs & wants for local low income families ELCA Good Gifts: December 4-11 Pigs, chicks, cows, goats and more given to families around the world make the best gift or even the hardest to shop for folks! > Daily Discipleship, Growing Generosity 16

Advent Worship Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. Using the beloved Evening Prayer Liturgy, “Joyous Light,” by Ray Makeever, we take time during this busy season to quiet our souls, sing the liturgy and a hymn, and listen to an Advent meditation. All are invited to worship. Dinner is served from 5:45-6:45 p.m. in the Gathering Room.

Advent Dinner: Los Posadas December 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Gathering Room In the spirit of our “journey” theme this Advent, we are pairing a new program, shared with us by our sister church in Guatemala, with a beloved LCR tradition! Los Posadas or “The Lodging” re-creates the Holy Pilgrimage of Mary & Joseph on their way to Bethlehem. We will re-enact their search and celebrate their eventual success. Bring your favorite international dish to share!

Community Christmas Caroling December 10-11 at locations around the community All are welcome to lend their voices to our caroling group! We ask that you plan to attend a few rehearsals prior to our outings.

Christmas Eve Worship December 24 at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. & 10 p.m. Join us at 5 p.m. for a family friendly service featuring “Journey to Bethlehem” featuring a costumed tableux of the Christmas story. Our 8 & 10 p.m. services are traditional Christmas celebrations, featuring a variety of music, instruments, and carols. All services include communion and singing Silent Night by candlelight.
