Editor’s Note
July/August 2014 The Crowborough Directory
Dear Readers, What splendid sunshine we had during the Crowborough Fun Day last month. I think there must have been the biggest turnout ever to one of these events. Well done to all those involved in the organisation from the Crowborough Chamber of Commerce. I always enjoy this afternoon out as I know I’m going to have the opportunity to catch up with lots of friends and clients in one afternoon. It was particularly nice to catch up with Claire Braidwood from Warren Day Nursery who had a stall - we’ve spent months emailing but never actually met. She was there to recruit for a number of positions available at her growing nursery.
Of course the next major events coming up over the next couple of months are the Crowborough Summer Fair on the 12th July and the Crowborough Hospital Fete on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August. You’ll find information on these events and more on the Local Events listing on page 18. I always like to support the area as much as I can - if you belong to a community group, organisation or club and you would like to be featured in a future issue of the directory, please drop me an email. All the community content on the selected pages in the directory is included free of charge - if you have a message you would like to get out to the local community then let me know. Thank you to the Barrister Broker for sponsoring the prize crossword - a bottle of Champagne could be yours if you enter (age restrictions apply). A nice accompaniment to a warm summer’s evening in the garden. As usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline for content and advertising requests is Friday 1st August for the September/October issue. For advertisers - I’ve already been taking bookings for premium pages for 2015 - if you would like to secure a position then book now to avoid disappointment. Until next time....

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs I’m delighted with the response I’ve been having to the articles I’ve been including in this great magazine. It seems my message of reducing legal costs by using Barristers instead of solicitors is starting to hit home with many of you and one of the things I enjoy most about my work is being able to help people.
you to budget but make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your fixed fee. Also, ask questions of the person you are dealing with – Is the legal advisor a qualified solicitor or a legal executive? Will they do the work themselves or will it be done by a trainee? What level of experience does the legal advisor have dealing with contested matters? Will they represent you at court? If not, why not? If they will, do they have sufficient trial experience?… etc. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, after all, you are putting your future and investing your money in this person’s hands!

Foodbank’s first four months confirms a need Throughout the country in the past year Trussell Trust foodbanks distributed three days’ emergency food to over 900,000 people and now Crowborough Foodbank has confirmed that even in this part of East Sussex there is a similar real and present need. “In our first four months,” says Andrew Drummond Smith, Crowborough Foodbank Deputy Co-ordinator, “135 people received three days of emergency food from us – made up of 73 adults and 62 children.”
“for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill to domestic violence, to family breakdown or changes in benefit.” In response to such crises the foodbank’s 44 volunteers work together to provide a minimum of three days nutritionally balanced, nonperishable food and support from its base at the United Church in Croft Road. It is open every Tuesday and Friday between 2pm and 4pm. To claim food for themselves and their family, each client has to provide a voucher provided by one of Crowborough Foodbank’s referral agencies who include the Citizens Advice Bureau, Cluedup.info, Wealden Refuge, the Children’s Centre, School Nurses and Health Visitors.
When the foodbank was opened on 7th January as a project of Crowborough & Rotherfield Churches Together and under the guidance of the Trussell Trust, the organising team was uncertain about the depth of need in the area, although over a year’s “In the coming year,” says Foodbank Coresearch suggested there was a demand. ordinator Freda Robinson, “we hope to increase Now that the need has been proved, the the number of partner agencies who refer foodbank is aiming to encourage a wider clients to us and to increase the awareness of awareness of its operation throughout the whom we support and how those facing a crisis district. During April and May 6,000 leaflets can benefit from the foodbank.” were delivered across Crowborough and posters have appeared around the town and in Jarvis Brook and Rotherfield, asking “Is anyone you know struggling with a sudden crisis?”

Latest news Thousands flock to Crowborough Town Centre This year’s Summer Fun Day saw people flocking to Crowborough town centre to enjoy an array of stalls and free entertainment. Organised by The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce the day was a huge success with thousands of people enjoying the good weather.
Over 50 stalls lined the High Street, Broadway and Croft Road with 13 French Market traders making a welcome return. The FREE Punch & Judy, magician, face painting, climbing wall and bouncy castle were as popular as ever with the bandstand attracting a large crowd. Music from Caleb Howard-Almond, Milly McCurran, Any Other Business, Last of the Wild and InChoir entertained visitors whilst they wandered around the centre of town that had been closed to traffic for the day. The day could not happen without the support of our Main Sponsors; Freedom Leisure, Lawson Commercial, Millbrook Garden Co and Prosperity IFA and our Feature Sponsors, Harris & Hoole, T&T DIY, Warren Day Nursery and Pre School and Zest. The backing by the sponsors meant that all the entertainment could be laid on for free with collection buckets placed around town so that members of the public could make a donation to the Crowborough Community First Responders, The Chamber’s chosen charity for this year. A presentation will be made at this year’s Annual Chamber Review in September. Chamber President Jeremy Woolger said “Once again the Fun Day saw an amazing turnout from the residents of Crowborough and beyond. It is immensely satisfying for the Chamber to be able to give something to the public whilst also offering businesses the opportunity to promote themselves to local people and raise awareness in the community.” “I also look forward to presenting the Crowborough Community First Responders with a cheque at the Chamber Review later in the year.” Photographs courtesy of Roger Bloxham People Photographer
