The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2020

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours What a whirlwind this new decade is already proving to be. Spring is just around the corner, the bulbs are all shooting up in the garden and the sun is shining brightly outside. This year also sees me leaving my house in Edenbridge to move to Forest Row, a great location which puts me right in the middle of the two areas I run my magazines. My other publication being The Crowborough Magazine. I will certainly miss the convenience of being in Edenbridge where we are spoiled with not one but two railway stations to take us into London. Of course, and due to the nature of my business, I will often be back in Edenbridge so it will be like I've never left in the first place. 16 years is the longest time I've ever lived in any one location and I've enjoyed every minute of it. Two of our much loved facilities are celebrating this year - the BRIDGES Centre on the High Street is celebrating 25 years of operation in town, providing a community cafÊ from Monday to Fridays, an event facility and much more. You can find the activities that are running there in the What's On pages of the magazine and make a plan to pop in on Saturday 18th April when they are holding a special event to celebrate their achievement. Another big milestone is for our local Eden Valley Museum, which is holding a special 20th Birthday Exhibition to mark 20 years in our town. They are running a photographic competition which is open to everyone. You can find full information on page 29. With so many picturesque places in the area it's going to be difficult to choose where to start first. There is much activity as well as plans are underway for some of the larger events we see in the area which you should put in your diaries now so you don't double book yourselves. Edenbridge Uncorked is back at Garbriel's Showground on Saturday 6th June bringing you all the best in food and drink with live demonstrations by Jo Banks from 'Alive with Flavour' as well as featuring local artists on stage during the evening. The other big 'not to be missed' event held at Gabriel's Showground is the Edenbridge Motor Show and Music Festival which this year is taking place on Sunday 13th September and I'm delighted that I've been asked to MC the event again. Of course there is plenty going on before those two events though. I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the Town Council's Annual General Meeting which is open to the public is taking place on Monday 2nd March at the WI Hall in Edenbridge. The meeting is open to everyone and you'll be able to find out about future plans for the town and have the 14 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk

The Edenbridge Magazine • March/April 2020 opportunity to speak to local town councillors and representatives from other local groups and organisations. Doors open at 6.30pm and the meeting starts at 7pm. I do recommend going along to the meeting if you can make it, especially if you are new to the town as it's a great way to find out more about what's going on in the area. So what have I been up to locally this year? The most memorable event so far has been the Forge Singers pantomime, Dick Whittington. I think it was one of the most entertaining performances so far and I definitely had the worst face ache from laughing so much. They do such a great job and I find it so clever how they combine local events and news into their storylines. Everyone put on an excellent show, not forgetting the backstage and front of house teams.

As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. If you'd like to have a chat about advertising or anything else to do with the magazine, just give me a call. The next deadline is Friday 3rd April for the May/June 2020 issue which will be distributed during the last week of April. Until next time...

Where do you start if your parents need care? There have been numerous articles in the national press detailing a lack of knowledge around the care system and what support is available to people in need of care. If your parents are at the stage where it is clear they need care, it can be a fearful, isolating time in which you are not sure which way to turn or who can help you. Many questions will need addressing, such as ‘Do I need to be looking at residential care homes or is there a way mum and dad can stay at home?’ or ‘Are there options of support with the funding of their care?’ People may have lived in their homes for over 40 years and still be an active member of the community, whether it be from supporting the local church or charities, to regular book clubs or coffee mornings with friends and neighbours. reduce the independence and choices of those involved. Even if you are a full time carer yourself, you may be eligible for respite care funding, which would allow you to have a break and time for yourself, in the knowledge that a fully experienced team would be supporting your parents in your absence. The good news is that there are many more options than you might think. Genuine Care may be able to help you and your family with detailed knowledge on what care package might be right for you, as well as what support with funding could be available. In some cases care packages can be fully-funded, Most importantly the choice is always yours: Genuine Care’s core values are to maintain our client’s independence through person-centred care. We tailor our care packages to your needs and wishes and understand that they can change week by week, with them.

Feature: Roll & Relax with Clare Goodwin Roll & Relax workshop

Clare started the session by taking us through the elements of the workshop, explaining what the activities would do for us. We started off with a meditation exercise to help relax our minds and bodies and raise our internal awareness.

Regular readers will know that I love trying out new things so when Clare Goodwin from Body & Spirit invited me along to one of her 'Roll and Relax' workshops in January, I jumped at the chance. Having attended some of her regular pilates classes in Edenbridge last year, I already knew that I enjoyed her teaching style. Clare has a deep understanding of her subjects - Pilates, meditation and body rolling - yet still appreciates the pressures we all have on our daily lives and comes up with ideas of how to combine some of her techniques into our already busy schedules.

I will admit that whilst I know and understand the benefits of meditation and mindfulness (paying attention in the present moment) and I do think how I must take a break in my day and just 'be', I somehow still never manage to fit it into my schedule. This is one of the benefits of coming along to a workshop such as this is that you are giving yourself time to just 'be'. The equipment Clare had provided for the session was a selection of different sized Yamuna balls which were used in a number of ways to stimulate the bones, tendons and muscles, creating length and space in the body and helping to relieve pain and stress. For each moment we were given, Clare would demonstrate first and explain the types of sensations we would most likely feel after each exercise. She would then go around the room to make sure we were happy with carrying out the various exercises, making adjustments to us if necessary.

As well as teaching regular Pilates classes in Edenbridge, Hever and Cowden, Clare also runs The final part of the session involved further workshops and you don't need to be attending meditation and I found this much easier than her classes to come along to these. the first time as I was feeling so calm and relaxed and good! This particular workshop was held at St Luke's Parish Room in Chiddingstone Causeway, a This year why not take some time out for very relaxing setting with views across the yourself and try one of Clare's workshops. You countryside and on the edge of woodlands. can find a full list of dates and prices on Clare's There were 5 of us in total which gave enough space around our individual exercise mats. I was glad that we didn't jump straight into the activities as I'd had a very busy morning so it was nice to have the opportunity to simply wind down for 10 minutes with a cuppa and have a chat with the other attendees before getting started.

News from the Community An opportunity to purchase the Bolebroke Cup for Eden Valley Museum The museum has been given the opportunity to purchase the Bolebroke Cup to save it from being purchased by a private buyer and taken out of the area. The cup is of great historic interest, dating back to 1901. The ticket price is £1,500 and Lennox Cato has agreed a specially reduced sale price to the museum of £1,350 and in addition has offered a personal donation of £100 towards the cost, leaving the museum with £1,250 to raise. The Bolebroke Cup was presented to the Edenbridge Fat Stock and Root Show by P.J. Mann and for many years was awarded to

tenant farmers gaining the most points in the Root, Corn and Hay classes. The show was an annual event from 1869 until the late 1950s and one of the forerunners to the ongoing Edenbridge & Oxted Agricultural Show. The museum are inviting donations from their members as well as everyone living and working in the area towards the purchase so they can keep this important local historical object in the Eden Valley. Can you help? There is a special donations box in the museum for contributions or donations can be made by cheque or bank transfer. Please contact the museum on 01732 868 102, email curator@evmt.org.uk or pop in at Church House, 72 High Street, Edenbridge, TN8 5AR (check opening hours at www.evmt.org.uk).

Feature: Nomads Football Club Preparing for the future with your help

but every good plan has to start somewhere. “We want this to be a place people feel like they want to come to and have a good time like I always have done.” says Alex Bradford, long serving club player of 11 years and current committee member.

Nomads Football Club is the only men’s football team within 10 miles of Edenbridge. With two adult teams, a 1st team and a reserve, both play in the Sevenoaks Football League. The 1st team are currently fighting for the championship in the Premier Division and the reserves are in Division 3 and doing well in their first season together. Nomads are based at Mowshurst Farm, Four Elms Road, TN8 6AG and own 2 full sizes pitches, a clubhouse with on site parking, multiple changing rooms, toilets, showers, a stocked bar selling hot, cold, soft & alcoholic beverages as well as light snacks. The facility is also available for hire. But everything is not quite as bright as it may seem. This season has been a real struggle as for the first time in over 20 years the club has received no sponsorship money to help with the general running costs which include kits for the players and hiring pitches for their matches as well as giving the facilities a much needed upgrade. The Committee have been inspired by the success of Edenbridge Cricket Club who raised funds to build the new Matt Cox Community Pavilion following the loss of one of their young players in 2015.

The committee would also like to build up the social side of the club as well as the sports side to appeal to an even wider audience than currently. They would like to see non-players come to visit the club and enjoy themselves and use the facilities. They want the club to be an integral part of the local community. “We just want what’s best for everyone on a Saturday afternoon and most of all, that is to be happy.” said 1st team captain and comittee member Lee Clark. Nomads currently have a gofundme page to achieve their £10,000 target so they can get the work underway - uk.gofundme.com/f/ nomads-football-club They are also seeking help, whether that be volunteers on a Saturday afternoon or builders with spare time and materials to help with the works. Or maybe you have some useful contacts that would help the club achieve their fundraising goal. They want to hear from you! With the enthusiasm of the young and willing Nomads Committee members, this is an exciting time to help build the club's future.
