• It gets the entire community involved the recognition process.

• It encourages healthy competition between businesses and if there is a common thread successful business people have, it is the desire to compete.
• It helps create enthusiasm within the businesses and the employees who get things done every day.
As a former business owner, I can remember all of the challenges that presented themselves and as soon as I thought I “figured” something out, a new challenge would come along to let me know otherwise. Knowing firsthand about the highs and lows of what running a business is like, it is personally gratifying to be involved in a program like this.
We want to recognize all of the businesses who made it to the final round. In many categories the voting was very close; a vote or two separating the winner from a business that finished second. We had a lot of repeat winners but also many first-time winners so there were no unimpeded paths for the winners.
The voting round year was extraordinary, there were far more voters and 30% more votes. Last year we had just over 228,000 votes and this year almost 294,000.
Let’s celebrate all of the great businesses we have in SWLA and the leaders that put their sweat equity into those businesses. And let’s not forget the employees who take pride in what they do and help each business succeed. No matter how good a business’s products and services are, it is the employees that make the wheels turn.
Thanks and see you all next year!
Dan PhelanThe definition of the word progress varies depending on the context. As a verb, progress is defined as “signifying the action of moving forward, developing to a higher, better, or more advanced stage.” This definition very accurately describes the action within Lake Charles at the moment.
The road to long-term hurricane recovery is long, but I can proudly say that much forward movement has taken place over the past three years. Re-establishing basic services, restoring and repairing damaged infrastructure and advocating for the necessary funding to bring our residents home to safe, attainable housing have all been top priorities. Getting the appropriate federal response for disaster aid was a team effort. This effort took countless advocacy efforts, including physical trips to Washington DC, and I am proud to have been a part of that team.
While taking care of these critical needs, we would be remiss if we did not think about what we want the future of Lake Charles to look like. We have dedicated time and energy to rebuilding in a manner that will make our community more resilient ahead of future storms. We have seized upon opportunities to create economic diversification and growth, providing a better City for the current and future generations.
When I came into office, I promised we would turn dirt on the lakefront. Port Wonder, rapidly taking shape on the lakefront, is a testament to our community’s fortitude. When we announced this project, set to house the
Children’s Museum and Louisiana Nature and Science Center, we promised it would be a catalyst for even more development. Crying Eagle is set to break ground on their lakefront restaurant and microbrewery this fall and plans have been announced for kayak rentals and other amenities through the addition of Lake Area Adventures, adjacent to the North Beach area. The lakefront parking garage is no longer an eyesore. Interest from additional developers has grown significantly since these groundbreakings and announcements.
In 2018, the City Council adopted three proposed economic development districts: the Lakefront, I-10 Corridor and Enterprise Boulevard. These districts, proposed by my administration, added several tools to our toolbox when it comes to attracting development along and within these corridors.
In addition to the successes we have seen on the lakefront, we
have seen progress within the other economic development districts as well. Mama Reta’s has returned to Lake Charles along the I-10 Corridor. On Enterprise Blvd, Acadian Ambulance transformed a long-dormant building into a Regional Headquarters and National EMS Academy and AA Billiards has opened its doors to a beautiful new retail business. Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park is nearing completion, and earlier this spring we joined with Visit Lake Charles and other stakeholders to announce a brand new home for the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu on Enterprise Boulevard.
We continue to aggressively pursue additional developments in these corridors.
These developments along with the proposed catalytic projects in the Community Foundation SWLA’s Just Imagine 50-year Master Plan are leading the way towards a brighter future for our community.
The LC REBOUND Proposal slated for the November 18 ballot will help pave the way for a future we have dreamed of for generations. Major infrastructure projects, quality of life initiatives and multi-agency partnerships are all a part of this tax neutral proposition.
If you have not taken the time to learn about LC REBOUND, I urge you to do so today by visiting www.cityoflakecharles.com/ LCREBOUND. After reviewing the proposal, feel free to ask questions or submit your feedback by emailing mal@cityoflc.us.
After years of development and funding efforts, the scenic, family-friendly education center Port Wonder is expected to be open to the public in the spring of 2024.
The 23,000-square-foot lakefront development project was first announced in 2018, and will be the new home for the Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Science and Nature Center. The total cost of the building and interiors comes in at $23.1 million — with funding raised by more than 30 public and private sources.
The fluid, eye-catching exterior of Port Wonder will be completed in early spring, with the interior and exhibit construction scheduled to be finished in mid-to-late spring. The doors of Port Wonder are slated to open for the first time in May 2024.
The Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana
The relocation of a community staple is something to celebrate, said Allyson Montgomery, Children’s Museum of SWLA executive director. For 35 years, the museum has provided area youth with unique programming and interactive experiences that encourage learning through play.
“We are carrying the same foundation into our new home at Port Wonder.”
They partnered with the city of Lake Charles and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on the project to create an expansive, family-friendly location. Montgomery said the Children’s Museum began work on a relocation plan — the goal was to keep the museum downtown, but
with easy access and greenspace for visitors — in 2016, but in 2020 the museum was closed due to Hurricane Laura.
That year was the beginning of a new era, she said.
“I think COVID and the year 2020 gave us our rebirth. We had to think outside the box and come up with new ways to reach families during those times. We are excited for the future as the possibilities are endless. We just can’t wait for the doors to open and for us to get back to what we do best, providing fun learning through play.”
Housed in Port Wonder, the museum will be state of the art, with 12,000 square feet of space filled with fresh, innovative exhibits to complement “new twists” on classic Children’s Museum exhibits areas. Everything will be completely interactive, and the exhibits will be spread throughout four gallery spaces. In addition to Our Big Backyard, the Nature Gallery will include an area themed around Sportsman’s Paradise and a water cycle table that will teach children about evaporation and condensation. The Health Gallery will feature interactive
demonstrations how the human body and the senses work together.
Children will be encouraged to learn about various science, technology, education and mathematics (STEM) topics like construction, air, density, gravity, chemistry and physics in the Tech Gallery. Montgomery said in this area, local industry partners will be represented.
The final gallery area is City, a child-sized Lake Charles with a vet clinic, news station, market, cafe and Safety Square. The City gallery will also have a Kida Port where visitors can move cargo in and out of a ship channel or climb a tall lighthouse. There will also be the Marker’s Garage, an area that will host daily STEM and art activities.
The Children’s Museum Playground Exhibit will be built in partnership with Kiwanis Clubs of Division 12, Christus Ochsner SWLA Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network, Families for Inclusion, and the Downs Syndrome Association of SWLA. The outdoor exhibit will be fully inclusive to allow children of all abilities to play.
“This area will give everyone an
equal opportunity to actively learn, discover, and play alongside siblings, parents, and friends. Giving a child with disability — whether that be a physical, a learning, or a mental disability — the chance to feel included not only benefits the child, but it benefits the greater world around them.”
Fundraising efforts for the playground exhibit began in June with a goal of $800,000. That goal is expected to be reached by May 2024. This funding will be put towards purchasing playground equipment, padding, canopy shades, benches and fencing to “ensure a safe environment for children to explore and enjoy an outdoor space created just for them.” The museum will provide outdoor programming and learning, as well as activities for older children.
The Children’s Museum is accepting donations through the “Here Comes the Sun” campaign for programs and operations. Donations can be made online at www.swlakids.org or by mail at P.O. Box 7577, Lake Charles, LA 70606. Those seeking information on exhibit sponsorships can email allyson@swlakids.org.
LDWF will have 5,500 square feet dedicated to the Science and Nature Center in Port Wonder. Both locals and tourists will get to experience several hands-on exhibits and informative programming that will center around “Louisiana fisheries and how they play a role in helping to manage and conserve the resources for future generations,” said Heather David, LDWF biologist manager.
SCEC will feature about 15,000 gallons of aquaria to house aquatic species. The species will originate “from the freshwater bayous of Louisiana to the open water of the Gulf of Mexico,” representing the range of aquatic animals that thrive in Louisiana’s waters. Interactive components, including a touch tank, are planned.
“The youth of Southwest Louisiana will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on education learning about the Louisiana coast, the species that inhabit the inland and coastal waters, recreational fishing opportunities and what LDWF is doing to ensure these species will be here for future generations to enjoy and utilize.”
There will also be a sports-fishing game, fisheries sampling gear and many other interactive activities that are themed around LDWF’s fisheries programs.
An outdoor exhibit area with walking trails lined with native plants will complement the ADA-compliant recreational fishing pier that is open to the public and Port Wonder visitors. Along with the trails, there will be outdoor seating areas for outdoor programs that will be hosted by Port Wonder.
The goal of the center is to help guests, young and old, gain a deeper understanding of LDWF’s role in resource conservation, and why the conservation of the natural resources they are “tasked to manage and conserve” is paramount.
LDWF became involved in the Port Wonder project after Mayor Nic Hunter and the city of Lake Charles approached the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group with a proposal to consolidate the Lake Charles Science Center and Education Complex with the Children’s Museum for a “more collaborative, exciting visitor experience” on the scenic lakefront, optimizing tourism options and local recreational activities in the city, said Brady Carter, LDWF biologist DCL.
SCEC’s proximity to the Children’s Museum will allow improved visibility and accessibility to the center, as well as a great view of the area’ natural beauty.
Rob Shadoin, LDWF secretary said the partnership will lead to long-lasting understanding of Louisiana’s resources, ecosystems and culture.
“LDWF is excited to be a part of telling the story of the abundance of outdoor opportunities in our Sportsman’s Paradise. We look forward to this partnership with Port Wonder to educate visitors, not only about the abundance of natural resources in our state, but their importance to our culture and way of life.”
The Chamber SWLA/Alliance salutes the many businesses in our area that have been selected by the general public as the People’s Choice in each category.
We are pleased that virtually all of the choices are members of the Chamber SWLA. There are over 1200 members in our Chamber encompassing all size businesses from single proprietor, a small ten person staff, and large industries and major employers. Regardless of size, they all share the same goal to serve their customers with quality goods and services with excellent customer service.
We think our region is made up of the friendliest folks anywhere and that should translate into friendly customer service. When a customer enters a business or makes contact by phone or social media, they expect to be greeted by someone who is interested in solving their needs. A model for customer service is always Chick-Fil-A. When you go there and place your order you are thanked with “My Pleasure.” Many times you encounter an employee at a business and after your purchase or a question, they say. “no problem.” No, it is not a “problem” when you are a customer and it should be the company’s and employee’s “pleasure.” The Chamber SWLA is offering customer service training on a continuous basis because we can never stop trying to improve. Call The Chamber if you are interested.
We strive hard to make The Chamber SWLA a leader among the over 6,500 chambers of commerce across the nation. After a strenuous review, we have been awarded Five Star Accreditation by the U.S. Chamber. This is the highest level we can earn and puts us in the top one percent of chambers in the nation. This achievement is only possible due to involvement by our Board of Directors and volunteers, which number over 200, and a dedicated, multi-tasking staff. We pledge to continue our continuous improvement to serve our members and our five parish area. The Chamber SWLA/ Alliance tackles education and workforce, quality of life, advocacy for infrastructure such as a new I-10 Bridge, and economic development for our region. We cultivate future leaders with Leadership SWLA and more.
Enjoy shopping and doing business with the People’s Choice winners. The American Press is doing a great community service by sponsoring these awards to recognize customer favorites. This can inspire all businesses to be the best they can. By shopping and utilizing the organizations in this issue, you also strengthen our region.
Congratulations to all People’s Choice winners.
