Windows 10 is one of the best versions of Windows that Microsoft has ever created. The compatibility and hardware support list is vast. Because of that, many really old computers are happily running Windows 10, especially after modest hardware upgrades to drives and RAM.

But this era is coming to an end and will send thousands of perfectly good yet older computers to the recycling bin. On Oct. 14, Microsoft will cease to support standard consumer and professional versions of Windows 10. Although Windows will continue to work, the lack of security updates will make any computer running the 10-year-old operating system more susceptible to vulnerabilities and unpatched holes. So, what are your options? Let’s explore a few. Upgrade to Windows 11: If your PC was built with an 8th generation Intel

or a 2nd to 3rd generation AMD Ryzen CPU AND has TPM 2.0 , then Windows 11 will install just fine and for free. There are other processors that are supported so see Microsoft’s website for a comprehensive list. We at Southern Technologies also recommend at least 8GB of RAM.

Although there are ways to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware we do not recommend doing so. It is possible that a future Microsoft update could cause problems for your older PC. To find out what processor is in your PC you can right-click on the “This PC” icon and select “properties” from the menu. The CPU and RAM should be listed in the right-hand information window.

Install Windows 10 LTSC: This special version of Windows is intended for “high uptime” enterprise computers. LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) will continue to receive updates at least for a couple more years. Furthermore, LTSC lacks some of the extra

processes that standard and pro versions have running in the background. This will save valuable RAM and CPU. LTSC is not cheap, and a full wipe and install will likely have to be performed on your computer.

Give Microsoft more money: Microsoft will offer a subscription to deliver Windows 10 updates past the October deadline, at least for a time.

Install a Linux distro: This isn’t your father’s Linux. Nowadays many distributions are catered to Windows users with easy to navigate desktop environments. Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Zorin, and Pop!OS are just a few of the operating systems we recommend. Watch YouTube videos on these versions to help you decide. Of course, a complete wipe and install is necessary for Linux.

Buy a modern PC: Especially for our small business and enterprise clients, we recommend buying modern computers and not hanging on to aging equipment which will, quite

Spending time outdoors in enhanced outdoor living spaces is a trend that was jumpstarted during the pandemic in 2020 and has not stopped since. Today, people remain more focused on the functional quality of their landscape and outdoor spaces, from expansive backyards and pool areas to patios, porches and pergolas.

According to Richie Everage, landscape design consultant with Landscape Management, landscape design trends may shift more slowly than fashion trends, but they still change over time, especially as general lifestyle preferences move in a particular direction. “Upkeep is always a concern, but with today’s multi-functional design options and new innovations, homeowners can spend more time enjoying their personal outdoor space.”

Here are some of the top outdoor design trends as reported by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) that Everage says are popular here in Southwest Louisiana as well.

Simple and functional

Minimalism has taken the world by storm, and outdoor spaces are adopting the trend, too. NALP’s survey found people are looking for sleek, contemporary landscape designs that look good and have some useful function, preferably in multiple seasons. Everage says this includes things like native plants, sleek lighting and protective structures that allow people to spend more time outdoors year-round.

Intricate hardscaping

Flat, uniform surfaces are giving way to more ornate, geometric ones. Homeowners are incorporating stone, concrete, and other hardscaping into their outdoor spaces and requesting waves, chevron, lattice, and basket weave patterns on everything from walkways to retaining walls, according to NALP. If you’re repaving a walkway or adding a fire feature, Everage says

you can add visual interest and reflect your personal style by working in a pattern.

Customized comfort

Everage says customized features that allow people to expand the amount of time — daily and seasonally — they can comfortably spend outdoors continue to increase in popularity. For example, pergolas, an ever-popular feature, are becoming more sophisticated, with major upgrades including rolldown windows, space heaters, lighting and sound systems. Outdoor kitchens are increasingly requested, along with ample seating space for outdoor entertaining. Fire pits and fireplaces are also becoming an expected part of outdoor living spaces. Everage says these can extend the season of the space, as well as create a natural gathering area for friends and family.

Artificial turf

A more recent trend that is picking up here is artificial turf. Everage says one of the main reasons is less upkeep for maintaining a green lawn yearround. “Turf also expands your usable outdoor living spaces – you don’t have to worry about the yard being too wet,” says Everage.

He adds that people with pets are requesting these more and more also, due to the built-in drainage and ease of clean-up. “We’ve also used turf to install personal putting greens. It’s very versatile.”

Outdoor lighting

Another major trend for landscapes is the addition of landscape lighting, as more homeowners want to extend the usable hours of their outdoor spaces. Everage says often people start with outdoor lights for security reasons, then expand to add curb appeal and to accent specific landscape features, such as trees, statuary or water features. The demand for water features is holding steady, according to NALP’s survey, with the popularity of large water features related to hardscape installations becoming more prevalent.

“Overall, what we are seeing is landscape planning that is more personalized for the lifestyle of the homeowners,” says Everage. “With the right plan, there’s no reason your outdoor space shouldn’t expand your usable living space.”

In the beginning is the farmer/ rancher. These impressive people are the foundation and backbone of the American meat industry. From those with five head of livestock to those with 1,000-plus, the American meat industry would be lost without their self-sacrificial willingness to put everything on the line each year to keep food on the table of every household. These men and women not only produce and sustain the annual demand of beef for consumption, but are simultaneously challenged with producing and sustaining the next generation of breeding stock to ensure future generations always have what they need to keep the market thriving and the American people fed. Once each new crop of livestock is cared for and weaned, they are then typically marketed either by contract or local sale barn auctions to various stockers and feeding facilities.
