Today’s lunch is hosted by our longtime President Mr Mark Hardy and I would like to say a personal thanks for all he has done to support me as Chairman and for all he has done for the club over the many years he has been President.

Welcome to our travelling guests from Rugby, the home of our sport. Welcome to the players and supporters who have made the trip today. Lions are one place above us in the league but we cannot now catch them as there are not enough games left, but let’s hope we have a good game and a good afternoon.

After the excitement of the 6 Nations and the great atmosphere at the club for Super Saturday, last week was a chance to get back to the grassroots rugby. Leighton travelled to Peterborough but was slow to start allowing the home side to get the better of them. We did manage to get back in the game and score some points but we had given Peter borough too much of a head start.

Second Half Revival Too Late To Save Beaten Buzzards Peterborough 33 - 12 Leighton Buzzard Despite a late second-half comeback, Leighton Buzzard were well beaten by a strong Peterborough side, who are placed fifth in the competitive Midlands East 1 league. With availability and injury forcing Buzzards to select a much-changed pack, Leighton struggled to gain possession and territory in the first half. However, with the addition of experienced forward and club coach Tom Mowbray at half–time, Buzzards secured enough ball to marginally outscore their opponents in the second period.

Peterborough kicked off on a dry day with little or no breeze.

Immediately Leighton were under pressure in their twenty-two – against a large pack and with new combinations in the lineout Buzzards struggled to secure possession. Leighton Jon Henkes conceded two early tries; firstly from a quick tap after a scrum penalty and secondly when the Peterborough prop crashed through. With both tries converted, Leighton were 14-0 down with only seven minutes played.

Slowly Buzzards played their way into the game. Possession remained Page 5 of 40

limited but when they had the ball, there were encouraging signs with Jack Whitehouse and Harri Sayer looking the most threatening runners. The defence remained resolute, epitomised by a brilliant try-saving tackle by Ashley Walsh, midway through the half.

Jack Whitehouse However, the Peterborough pack was continuing to exert pressure, threatening both Leighton scrum and lineout ball. Despite the commitment in defence, there was a sense of inevitability as the home side added further tries in the twentieth-eighth and thirty-eighth minutes to lead 26-0 at half time.

Possession had been so limited that Buzzards had not reached the Peterborough twenty-two at all in the first half. This was to change quickly after the break.

Buzzard coach Tom Mowbray brought himself on - immediately securing good lineout ball which the Buzzard pack drove towards Jacob Barker the line. Whilst initially stopped

short, it was the start of a period of sustained pressure that ended when Leighton finally crossed the line.

Unfortunately, the referee had seen an obstruction through crossing and disallowed the score. Further attacks followed with Mike Robert prominent Whilst Peterborough remained a threat, it felt slightly against the run of play when the home side extended their lead to 33-0 with their fifth try after fourteen minutes. It could have been worse shortly afterwards, if not for excellent defence from Eddie Wiggins after a Peterborough kick and chase. Midway through the half, Buzzards had a ten-minute spell down to fourteen men after Ash Walsh received a yellow card for dissent. However, this spurred Buzzards on and they scored the best try of the game five minutes later. Jack Whitehouse picked up a loose ball in his twenty–two, made a fifty-metre break before linking with Eddie Wiggins and then to Harri Sayer, to score in the corner. Leighton were now finishing strongly and Adam Stacey added a further try which James Brett converted with five minutes to go.

That proved to be the final score of the match, leaving Peterborough victorious at 33-12.

Whilst well beaten, this young Leighton side once again showed skill and enterprise to add to their indomitable spirit. Buzzards remain in twelfth place.

Future Buzzards Under 13s

Buzzards U13’s put in a dominant performance against Bugbrooke Badgers in what turned out to be a very one-sided encounter.

The young Buzzards started with real confidence and led by match captain Owen Merrison, took the game directly to Bugbrooke.

The tries quickly followed as the Buzzard forwards dominated the contact area with impressive displays of power and strength at both ruck, maul and scrum from Kian McWillians, Cullan Bowen and the rest of the forward pack.

By half-time Buzzards had the upper-hand in most aspects of play and had run in 9 unopposed tries.

The half-back pairing of Sam Johnson and Jamie West continued to control the game and launched the backs into the open spaces with further tries coming from Nathan Bottomley and Tyler Rose.

All in all a very committed and

competent display by the Buzzards U13’s against weaker opposition.

New & Returning Player Jacob Barker recently returned to the club and

was back in 1st XV action at the weekend against Peterborough.

Jacob has put in great performances for the 2nd XV and was rightly rewarded with a first XV berth. He came up through the mini & junior section and is proud to be a Buzzard. In the past he has said that he will never play for another club.

Future Buzzards Jack Cullen

We brought the sun over to St Albans this Sunday. Our opposition were short on numbers today but we’re well organised and good hosts.

We played two matches with some Buzzards players going over to help make up the opposition numbers.

Congratulations to young Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club Referee Jack Cullen, receiving his Young Match Official Shirt after achieving his Level 2 qualification from Dave Marshall, Beds RFU Community Rugby Coach.

Well done, Jack from all of the Buzzard Family.

The game started slowly, with both sides allowing tries to be scored with strong direct running. But with some shuffling of the teams the game came to life.

There was some excellent running rugby and good tackling with the Buzzards and St Albans BaaBaas being evenly matched. Both teams worked hard to defend with turnover balls off each try line.

Our interplay in attack continues to improve with some well-timed passes resulting in tries being scored.

The final quick fire match, Buzzards vs Buzzards, was played with plenty of passion which is always great to see on the pitch.

Good weather, good rugby and a team that continues to push forwards.

Time Gone By The fixture on the 1st December 2018 was a game of errors and mistakes on both sides and the number of scrums must have been approaching a new world record as slips and knock ons abound from both sides. Lions scored within the first 10 minutes and again just before half-time followed shortly after with a Buzzards try through Sayer, converted by Brett.

Forsythe went of ill in the first half.

The second half started with a score from Lions. Forsythe returned to field following an injury to KJ Evans (not played since) and then a short time later took an enforced 10 minute break. Lions then ran in two more tries to bring the score to 25 -7.

Harri Sayer was my Buzzards man of the match who showed that running hard and fast at Lions would breech their back line and tire their forwards.

Dickie’s Drivel Anarchy in the UK

Well, what can I say? I am gutted.

As I may have related before, a great sage and influence on my life once said, after my brother had, how can I say it, to protect the more sensitive amongst you, orally projectiled a night’s beer on the floor of the former’s newly built, but thankfully, yet to be furnished, annexe, “well, it was going to happen sooner or later, it just happened sooner”.

However, today now not being the day after which it was intended the UK would leave the EU is not the reason that I’m upset. It seems that this will happen later rather than sooner.

Let’s face it, it’s been a right dog’s dinner!

Usually, when I encounter the canine species it goes either one of two ways. The first is the pooch sniffing my crotch, then sniffing its own, deciding this smells better and then spending a protracted period of time licking it. This I can forgive and live with. It is, after all, albeit a low level one, an endorsement of my personal hygiene. The second is that said hound just goes straight in there - and rogers one of my legs.

Jean Claude Barnier’s approach to the Brexit negotiations has been akin to this, as he has, throughout, sniffed the UK’s crotch, sniffed and licked the EU’s but then gone straight back to roger the UK’s leg!

Putting the Brexit process into a Rugby context, it’s been like a 648-person scrum. Every time, Scrum Half Theresa May has tried to put the ball into the scrum, it’s collapsed with Referee, Speaker of the House, John Bercow, only occasionally blowing the whistle!

So, the current ‘Brexiternity’continues…

Maybe leaving the EU will prove to be a good thing. Let’s face it, you know Page 30 of 40

that, in the spirit of ‘health and safety gone mad’, you’re over-regulated when, as happened in France recently, even rioters feel obliged to wear high visibility vests! Rumour has it, ‘Les Gilets Jaunes’ used unleaded petrol rather than diesel in their Molotov Cocktails, so they could reduce their carbon emissions.

But, the main problem was that President Macron misread the psychology of the protesters. If you give a man a hi-viz vest, he feels vulnerable.

However, if you also give him a clipboard, he feels important! So, instead of attacking them with water cannons, he should have backed up a fleet of lorries laden with clipboards and got the riot police to throw these at the protesters instead!

So, that’s another problem solved using ‘Dickie think’ but even this hasn’t allowed me to deal with why I’m gutted and, sadly, which happened sooner rather than later - the LBRFC 1st Team having been relegated.

Despite, and in the face of, this, there is actually greater cause to be positive than to be negative. The return of players, such as Elliott Swan and Will Bachelor is the first of these but I’d argue that the more positive attitude and spirit displayed by the team in the latter part of the season, and has led to improved performances on the pitch, bodes well for next season.

So, lads, to quote another great sage and influence, Chris Pearson, give it some ‘griff’ this afternoon. Shots all round, except for those who whimper that they’re driving of course, if you win.

Otherwise, hence the title, I leave with you my Brexit album, ‘Never mind the Bollocks’ by the Sex Pistols. Released over forty years ago now, a number of the tracks on it resonate today, of which ‘Anarchy in the UK ‘is only one. Our ‘Liar’ politicians have been ‘Pretty Vacant’ with ‘No Feelings’ and, because of new visa restrictions, we won’t be able to go on a ‘Holiday in the Sun’. But, of course, with no ‘Submission’ to the EU, ‘God save the Queen’
