A warm welcome to all as you join us for our annual Past-Player’s Lunch.

An especially warm welcome to our visitors from Northampton Old Scouts; again, it is always good to welcome back old rivals and friends.

It is always good to reacquaint with old friends and team-mates, and I am sure that many a tale will be told about happy days gone by and matches that, through the passage of time, are now somewhat different to the actual event. Tackle counts will be higher, weaving runs will be longer, line-out leaps will be more salmon-like, defenders beaten to the line will be more numerous!

Whilst looking back to those halcyon days when our knees/backs/ shoulders didn’t ache so much and the noises we made when rising from a chair were fewer and quieter, it is also important to remind ourselves that we cannot live in the past completely. As John F. Kenedy said “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

Rugby clubs that stand still, fall behind and the world is a very different place to what it once was and so our ways of thinking and looking at the way the club functions have to be different. This is an often difficult and sometimes uncomfortable thing to get to grips with, but necessary. Sometimes, not always, the rose-tinted spectacles have to come off.

The volunteers who run the club are always open to discussion about how we can grow and improve the club, whilst holding on to some of the traditions that make this great club what it is, so please do come and have a chat with anyone on the Committee or the Board of Directors, we are always looking for a helping hand. Many of you will be aware that one such past-player (Neil Rayner) did just that and stood up to take on the Director of Rugby role, which he has made great in-roads into already. Rather than sit back, he stepped up.

As many of you return to the club after a period of absence you will not fail to notice a few changes to the facilities and personnel around the club, so please feel free to have a wander round once the players are out of the way.

We are almost finished in terms of this phase of the facility redevelopment, and with the reconfiguration of the Changing Rooms we now have more flexibility in what we are able to offer in terms of Adult, Junior, Mini and Women’s rugby. We also now have greater capacity in terms of the toilets etc for functions, which will save us money in the long run by avoiding having to hire in extras for the Summer Ball and other events.

Many of you may not yet have met Jody, our ‘new’ (she’s been in post since July) General Manager, so please do say hello when you see her around. She has made an excellent start to her time running the bar. We also have a ‘new’ catering team, lead by Alex, again please say hello.

Thank you so much for supporting us today, hopefully we will see some of your more regularly, the club will be glad to see you.

Final Score Fails To Reflect Buzzard Effort

Newbold On Avon 43 – 17 Leighton Buzzard

Leighton Buzzard lost their latest Regional 2 East Midlands league game away at Newbold on Avon. However, Buzzards can realistically feel that the final score does not reflect the competitiveness of their performance. Indeed with 30 minutes left, the score was tied at 17-17 - however an injury to winger Tom Attwell, meant that Buzzards had to play the rest of the game with fourteen men. Newbold took full advantage of this numerical superiority scoring four tries in the last twenty-five minutes.

Leighton kicked off and immediately there were encouraging signs with Eddie Wiggins making a good line break. More ominous was that the scrum which was under significant pressure, conceding two penalties in the first seven minutes. Despite this, Buzzards were creating chances, with Euan Irwin, unusually playing at no.8 rather than centre, particularly prominent. However, it was the home side that took the lead after twenty minutes, initially breaking out from their own twenty-two and, a few phases later, scoring in the corner. With the difficult conversion missed Buzzards trailed 5-0.

This setback seemed to galvanise the Buzzard team with an extended period of pressure on the Newbold line. After many attempts just failing to cross the

line, Euan Irwin went over in the corner, leaving the score level at 5-5. Shortly after Newbold scored following a catch and drive from a lineout, which with a successful conversion, put them 12-5 ahead, with ten minutes of the first half left. A brilliant try-saving tackle shortly afterwards by Buzzard fly-half, Tom Winch prevented the lead being extended. Leighton could easily have drawn level late in the half – winger Tom Attwell intercepted and, with a clear run to the line, the referee called play back, apparently for a knock-on.

The second half started badly – a clearance kick gave Newbold the opportunity to counter-attack which, after a couple of phases, led to a try in the corner. With less than one minute played in the half, the lead was now 17-5.

As in the first half, Buzzards fought back with a period of sustained pressure. And once again it was the veteran Irwin, the only survivor of the last Buzzard team to play at Newbold, six years ago, who breached the defence to score. The successful conversion made the score 17-12. Four minutes later, Tom Winch showed real pace to score in the corner bringing the scores level.

Shortly afterwards Buzzards thought they had taken the lead after a fine break by Ollie Taylor but the try scoring pass was adjudged forward. Twice more, later in the half they crossed the line but

This was a game that Buzzard 2s could so easily have won only to lose it in the dying minutes of the game. The game started badly for Buzzards, after some early midfield skirmish Buzzards found themselves out numbered on their right wing and OGs took advantage scoring a converted try under the posts. Buzzards upped their effort in the loose play and tackling and defence alignment was exemplary but the set piece left a lot to be desired. And as in past weeks attacks fizzled out as the ball just would not stay in hand. Fifteen minutes after opening the scoring OGs created an overlap and again scored a converted try under the posts. Something must have clicked with Buzzards, the defence remained strong, ball was emerging from the scrum and the ball stayed in hand and OGs could not resist the driving thrusts from the forwards and backs. Jamie Whyte crashed through OG’s defence and scored and Ben Cullen, making his senior debut stepped up and converted to make the score 7 - 14 at half time. The second half started as the first had finished with Buzzards dominating the game and very quickly Terry Wessells celebrated with his first of three tries for the afternoon, Cullen converted. Six minutes later Ben Cullen scored close to the posts and converted. OGs struck almost immediately with a converted try, score 19 - 21. At 26 - 21 Buzzards appeared to be in control with Wessells carving his way through OGs to score his second try of the afternoon. And fourteen minutes later Wessells got

his third try of the afternoon. Fourteen minutes later OGs scored another converted try. At 31 - 28 their tails were up. Poor discipline at the break down and back chat did nothing for Buzzard’s cause. Having been marched back 10m for back chat a transgression at the break down conceded another penalty and more unnecessary back chat Buzzards conceded another 10m. OGs were in striking distance of the of the try line and although tackled at the line and not appearing to release the ball the ref played on. OGs then proceeded to cross the line and seemingly drop the ball but the ref decided otherwise. The try was awarded and OGs converted. Final score 31 - 35. A great game to watch, enjoyed by all the players.

Dickie Drivels

On, How to propagate Begonia, reserved for another week, insteadTen Years On

In historical terms, and to me at least, today is a non-day, with it falling between 21st October, the date of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and 23rd October, the start of the Battle of El Alamein in 1942, making tomorrow the latter’s 80th anniversary.

Believe it or not, I’ve been drivelling for ten years now, allowing me to return, albeit unimaginatively, to that which I wrote ten years ago at the time of the 70th anniversary of the latter battle.

Rugby was how Monty won the Battle of El Alamein

After the battle, Winston Churchill declared “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end but it is perhaps the end of the beginning”.

Somewhat strangely, ten years ago, the 1st Team, had lost their first four league matches and won the fifth - just as has happened this season - but were fourth in the league at the end of that season, having won eight out of fourteen matches.

As I said then, and I also say now, the beginning is now in the past but the end, of at least, a higher league position, with pride in achieving it, is still ahead.

That, though, is as motivational, and emotional, as it’s going to get!

It would have been good to further quote Winston Churchill, in his saying “Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat” but, with the defeat at Newbold last Saturday, this is sadly not now applicable.

If it is said that the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton, the Battle of El Alamein was won on the Rugby field, as General Montgomery, ‘Monty’, played the battle like a game of Rugby Union.

Monty was small in stature, had a high-pitched voice, an even higher opinion of himself and irritated almost everyone around him, which is why he’s one of my heroes. He had only one characteristic in his favour - he motivated and,

Dickie’s Drivel

accordingly, was respected, if not always loved, by the men he commanded. Churchill once described him as irritating his own side as much as the opposition. He would have, thus, been a highly effective scrum half.

And Monty fought, and won, the Battle of El Alamein like a scrum half. He always kept the initiative, even after a breakdown, he went through the phases, constantly changed the point of attack, never gave up the ball, got under the skin of his opposite number, Rommel, and then made the ‘killer pass’ that released his glory hungry, pretty boys in the backs, to break the opposition’s line and secure the points of victory.

But it was a battle of attrition with the hardest fighting, and casualties, being endured by the infantry, in Rugby terms, the forwards, without which there would have been no victory - and no points.

But it might have been very different. Had Monty been a fly half, he would probably have kicked the ball into the Qattara Depression to the south of the battlefield or the Mediterranean Sea to the north of it. Some territory or possession may have been gained and he would have kept his knees clean but there would have been no eventual victory had he done so.

Monty fought the Battle of Normandy after D-Day in a not wholly dissimilar manner, by anchoring his forwards, the British 2nd Army, on his left wing and, eventually, giving the the ball to the glory boys in the backs, the Americans, to swing around on the right wing, using the hard slog of the forwards as its hinge. A manoeuvre that any Rugby Union Coach would have been proud of.

I’ve, as usual, digressed somewhat but the Battle of Normandy would not have been won without Monty having motivated and galvanised the previously demoralised Eighth Army before El Alamein.

I, thus, see a parallel with LBRFC and the new coaching set up today, around which I’m getting a really positive vibe, with there being greater cohesion and, certainly, greater communication than previously.

That said, there does seem to still be a shortage of players for away matches; with, I hear, P Arthur and G Fletcher having been named as replacements at Newbold last Saturday. Whilst there’s, therefore, hope for me to yet make my first 1st Team appearance, in the meantime, please pass the Port.

Points of Law

Penalties close to the touch line

In the game at Towcestrians, a penalty was awarded about one metre from the touchline and the penalty was taken from that position. I was asked if this was correct, with the suggestion that it should be always at least five metres in. The answer is that the referee was correct. There is the law that any penalty close to the try-line must be at least five metres from the try line but there is no similar law for touch. This reminded me of one situation where a penalty near the touch line is brought further infield. If a kicker is late tackled the penalty is either the place of the offence, or more likely, where the ball landed. However, even if the ball lands near touch this second penalty must be a minimum of 15 metres infield. The logic for this is that if the kick had gone into touch the penalty re-start would be 15 metres in and therefore it would be unfair to give a less favourable penalty for what may have been a better kick.
