Midlands Division 1 East Leighton Buzzard RFC v Old Northamptonians RFC 16th February 2019 Kick Off 2:15pm A warm welcome to one and all for the next round of Midlands 1 East league. A special welcome to our friends from Old Northamptonians, players, committee and supporters. When we played at Northampton earlier in the season it was a cold and wet day and rugby was not the greatest as a result. Here’s hoping for a better day and better rugby.

Last weekend was a feast of rugby for everyone. On Saturday we had two six nations matches shown on the big screen and the new TV in the bar. Whilst outside we had an amazing game when our 2’s took on Mens Own. Starting a few players short we were expecting an uneven contest, and it was. Within 10 minutes we were 3 tries up. Injuries added to our number trouble but the magnificent 2nd team ranging from 18 years old to 60+ stuck at it and won 41-7. Great spirit and well done to all.

In Leicester, our 1st team were also struck by injuries when young Harry Cootes, back from University for the day, broke his collar bone. We wish him well.

The remainder of the team fought hard against a well drilled Oadby team but eventually came off second best.

On Sunday our Under 15s team played in the Cup Quarter-final against Towcesterians with a number of under 14 players playing up a year. Another great performance with some fine play by the young Buzzards which was rewarded with a great win against a strong Towcesterians side. Well done to all.

Oh, and England beat a very poor French side on Sunday which was again shown on the big screen.

Let’s hope for some great rugby again this weekend. Good luck to all Buzzard teams playing.

Buzzards Second-Half Fightback In Vain Oadby Wyggestonians 29 - 15 Leighton Buzzard Whilst their winning run came to an end, Leighton Buzzard played some of their best rugby of the season for thirty minutes during the second-half against Leicester-based Oadby Wyggestonians in their latest Midlands 1 East league game. Buzzards had lost at home to these opponents by fifty points earlier in the season, so no one was underestimating the scale of the challenge.

Having conceded four tries in the first half hour and lost their pack leader to injury, Buzzards showed considerable spirit and skill to narrow the gap during the second half.

The home side kicked off Eddie Wiggins with the benefit of a strong cross-wind towards Buzzards left-hand corner. It took Oadby Wyggs only four minutes to open the scoring. Their huge pack gained a penalty at the first scrum as the Buzzard pack was driven back. The penalty was quickly taken and driven over for a 5-0 lead. Worst was to follow, as pack leader Harry Cootes suffered a serious injury to his collar bone and shoulder, and was taken to hospital.

The home pack was now dominating and, with the wind against them, Buzzards were finding it difficult to escape their half. The home team added further tries in the fifteenth and eighteenth minutes, which, with one

conversion, made the score 17-0. However, the best try of the half was to come from Buzzards. An expertly timed and weighted pass from Jack Whitehouse made space inside their own half for fleet-footed centre Eddie Wiggins. With a combination of jinks and dummies, Wiggins ran half the length of the pitch, Harri Sayer almost untouched, to score under the posts. James Brett converted to leave Buzzards trailing 17-7.

Buzzards were still struggling against the power of the Oadby scrum, conceding a pushover try after half-an-hour. The successful conversion made the score 24-7. Whilst this was the final score of the half, there were further injury concerns prior to the break. At another scrum, the Buzzard pack lost their footing but the drive continued over the buckled forwards.

Regrettably, the referee failed to blow for safety reasons and there was a long delay with both Adam Lackey and Jacob Murtagh receiving extensive treatment.

Luckily there were no serious injuries, although Lackey was Reece Harris-Smith unable to continue leaving Leighton without any further replacements.

Perhaps it was a team camaraderie bonded together by adversity, but the Leighton team started the second half with renewed spirit, commitment and no lack of enterprise. A James Brett penalty was an early reward to bring the score back to 24-10. Despite having a difficult afternoon at the set piece, the forwards were now exerting pressure. set piece, the forwards were now exerting pressure. and they came close to adding to the score when they were over the line but unable to ground the ball. This pressure led to Oadby Wyggs conceding an increased number of penalties and two yellow cards after twenty–five and twenty-seven minutes. The second of these penalties was in front of the posts but now James Brett playing against thirteen men chose to go for the try. Unfortunately, a knock–on stopped the move and with it the chance of unexpected glory.

In the remaining minutes, Oadby Wyggs came back into the game, but the Buzzard defence was resolute. Whilst it was a team effort, try -saving tackles from Dan Baroux and Andrew Harris-Smith were particularly memorable.

With five minutes left James Brett was shown a yellow card for an offence at a ruck. The home side chose to take a scrum and drove over against a tiring Buzzard side for a pushover try to leave the final score 29-15.

TMO, Grounding The Ball & Penalty Tries When Television Match Officials were first appointed didn’t we think this would clear up any uncertainty or debate? Well, it seems to me that it has increased debate. Perhaps we just accepted the referees decision in the past but it has been a surprise how many decisions are now unclear despite numerous TV angles.

In the Ireland v England game, Mako Vinapola touched down behind the line but was adjudged to have made a second movement. First the law; a player tackled close to the line can score a try if:“he can immediately reach out and ground the ball on or over the line”.

Whilst double-movement is not specifically mentioned the implication of “reach out” is to prevent a movement of the whole body - excepting momentum which is covered elsewhere in the law. What is not clear is the ruling when the tackled player is prevented from doing this by a player on the ground. The positioning of the Irish player, infield and on the ground prevented Vinapola grounding the ball immediately.

Therefore Vinapola had to move giving the impression of a double movement. If the player was in goal he can prevent grounding as the tackle has ended when in goal so he doesn’t have to roll away as he would if not in goal. But if he is in the field of play and on the ground then he is out of the game- and possibly preventing a try illegally.

At best Jerome Garces’ decision seemed very harsh on Vinapola’s effort.

What surprised me more was having asked the TMO he then didn’t bother to find out what he thought. I’m all for the referees making the decision once they’ve seen the screen but if you ask the TMO surely you need to listen to what he says – even if you then overrule him.

Nigel Owens gave a penalty try to England against France when Chris Ashton was held back. There was some doubt about how the ball was bouncing. However, the point I want to make is that for a penalty try to be scored the referee has to adjudge that a try would PROBABLY have been scored. Not certain just probably. When I refereed we were told 66% likelihood was sufficient but many players and TV pundits still believe it the ref has to be 100% sure. This is not the case and well done Nigel Owens even if it was poorly explained on TV.

Time Gone By The fixture earlier in the season was a close affair being settled in the dying minutes of the game with a try to ONs. Buzzards opened the score with a well worked move releasing Matt Brazier to score his first and only try for the club. Buzzards missed a penalty kick to take the lead and then conceded a try. At half-time the score had been evened up at 5 - 5.

The second half saw Buzzards maintain the pressure on ONs with Tom Mowbray being denied a try, judged held up. Tom returns to the side today, let’s hope he can open his try scoring account, no pressure Tom. With 3 minutes left on the clock ONs scored a try, final Score 10 - 5.

Received Contribution Four guys had been bragging about how smart their cats were, so agreed to meet up to see whose was the smarter. The first bloke was an Engineer; the second an Accountant; the third a Chemist and the fourth a Civil Servant.

To show off, the Engineer called to his cat: "Set-square, do your stuff."

Set-square pranced over to a desk, she took out a sheet of paper and a pen and promptly drew a circle, a square and a right-angled triangle. The others agreed that was pretty smart stuff.

But the Accountant claimed his cat could do better. He called his cat and said: "Spreadsheet, do your stuff."

Spreadsheet went out into the kitchen and returned with a dozen cupcakes. She divided them into 4 equal piles of 3 cookies each. Everyone agreed that was neat.

But the Chemist stated that his cat could do even better still. He called his cat and said: "Measure, do your stuff."

Measure got up, walked over to the fridge, took out a pint of milk, got a bowl from the cupboard and she poured exactly half a pint, without spilling a drop. Everyone agreed that she was cool.

Then the three men turned to the Civil Servant and the Chemist asked: "So, what can your cat do?"

The Civil Servant called his cat over and said calmly: "Coffee Break, do your stuff."

Coffee Break jumped to his feet, ate the cupcakes, drank the milk, cra##ed on the paper, screwed Set-square, Spreadsheet and Measure, claimed he injured his back while doing so, filed a H&S report due to unsafe working conditions, submitted a claim for compensation and then went home for the rest of the day on sick leave. Everyone agreed that Coffee Break was hot stuff!

Received Contribution In deepest Wyoming cattle country, there was a rancher whose wife had passed, leaving him with three beautiful teenage daughters. Every weekend, when they went out on dates, the rancher would stand on their porch, shotgun at the ready, making it clear to the girls' dates that he wanted no trouble and expected "best behaviour" from them.

So another Saturday night came around. At about 7 pm, there was a knock on the door. He answered and the young man standing there, said, "Hi, my name's Joe. I'm here for Flo. I'm taking her to the show. Is she ready to go?"

The rancher thought he was a clever boy and wished them a good time.

A few minutes later, another knock was heard. A second boy appeared and said, "Hi, I'm Eddie. I'm here for Betty. I'm taking her for spaghetti. I hope she's ready."

He thought that Eddie must be a decent lad, so bade them off, too, with his best wishes.

A few minutes after that, a third knock was heard.

"Hi, I'm Chuck ..." which was when the rancher shot him ....

Jig of the Week: This week’s performed by Jacob Murtagh Jacob’s reaction when Wiggo failed to pass to him with Buzzards camped on Oadby’s line.

Jacob was born in July 2000 in Milton Keynes, we all have our crosses to bear.

He has been a regular 1st team player since the 14th October 2017 when he made his debut at Bugbrooke. He has represented East Midlands at under 20.

Jacob is sponsored by Mummy and Daddy who regularly come to watch him play. Daddy is frequently absent when he watches Kiss Ball instead.

Jacob is single and now we know why.
