Leighton Buzzard RFC v Northampton Old Scouts RFC 2nd December 2017, Kick Off 2:15pm Today we have the great pleasure of welcoming Northampton Old Scouts to Wright’s Meadow for this Midlands 1 East League match. We hope their committee, Players and Supporters have an enjoyable afternoon with us.

This has been a very busy week for the club with a full rugby committee meeting looking at how we improve the rugby offer at the club and how we recruit and retain our players. It is all very different nowadays and what worked “when I were a lad” no longer applies and we have to be modern and efficient in our approach to getting players out. The good news is we have a lot of very committed individuals working hard to move the club on, and although there are no easy answers I am confident we will succeed.

The club also hosted an under 15’s (year 9 and 10) match between our two local upper schools, Vandyke and Cedars this week. It was great to see the players, some of whom play for the club, enjoying their rugby.

Vandyke were the run away winners on this occasion, changed days.

The under 14’s will be playing on the 12th December if anyone wants to come down and watch. This is the latest in a series of matches at the club for the upper and middle schools within Leighton Buzzard and it is great to report we are building the relationships with the schools in the area. We also hosted a tournament for the lower schools. As an amateur club this is how we will grow and develop going forward. Please help support the future of the club either through the rugby committee of schools relationship. All help gratefully received.

Whilst the result was disappointing, Buzzards were very unlucky with injuries to their forwards – and showed remarkable spirit and fightback in adversity.

The match started well for Leighton – after two minutes a well-rehearsed driving maul from a lineout resulted in a try for player/coach Tom Mowbray to give Buzzards a 5-0 lead. Five minutes later, Melton Mowbray opened their account when a misalignment in the Leighton defensive line provided the Tom Mowbray opportunity to score under the posts – with the conversion the home side led 7-5.

After seventeen minutes Buzzards suffered a crucial piece of bad luck – second row Tom Mowbray had to retire injured – missing Tom’s presence and experience, the scrum, which up to then had been securing their own ball, came under huge pressure. This pressure was to continue for the rest of the game, threatening to starve the dangerous Buzzard backs of possession.

The following ten minutes juxtaposed the differing style that was to last the game - Melton Mowbray’s forward power created a further try to take a 12-5 lead but finally Buzzards had enough possession to create space for centre Arran Perry to carve through.

With Jocky Marshall’s conversion the Arran Perry score was level at 12-12. A pushover scrum after 36 minutes restored the home side lead , (17-12) and, whilst under pressure, Buzzards held out until half-time without conceding further scores.

The second-half could hardly have started worse – a gift of an interception gave the home side a try under the posts and four minutes later a penalty extended the home lead to 27-12. Back came Buzzards again – the initial forward drive was held up but the recycled ball was passed out for Arran Perry to score under the posts for his second try – Jocky Marshall’s conversion left Leighton 27-19 behind.

Again Buzzards suffered bad luck with injuries – Reece Harris-Smith being the third forward off injured, meaning that a back had to play in the forwards. Inevitably the pressure told – with Melton Mowbray scoring two further tries in the next seven minutes to lead 37-19. In this scenario Arran Perry many teams would have wilted, but Buzzards are made of sterner stuff and 22 minutes through the half Jacob Barker scored Leighton’s fourth try to secure a bonus point and make the score 37-24.

Whilst the home side extended their lead with their seventh try (42-24) the best was still to come. With time running out Leighton ran the ball from deep in their half and, after passing through many hands, Page 6 of 40

Ollie Taylor quickly drop kicked the conversion to allow time for the restart to allow the chance for further scores and a possible extra bonus point as the home side visibly tired - sadly it was James Brett not to be, as the game ended 42-31.

Beaten and bruised but the Buzzards returned with their heads held high following a display of resilience and spirit and quality rugby with very limited possession.

Coach Tom Mowbray commented “We made the 90 mile trip up to Melton Mowbray on a cold, windy day and we were expecting a battle and that is certainly what we got. Melton Mowbray had a big powerful pack and dominated us in the scrum, so we struggled to get good, clean ball to our dangerous backline. Our fitness and resilience showed in the end and I was very proud of the way the boys finished the game - we wanted to come away with 5 points but 1 is better than nothing. We will work hard on Tuesday and Thursday putting the wrongs right, ready for Northampton Old Scouts visit to Wrights Meadow next Saturday�

Bedfordshire Cup - Quarter Final 18th November 2017 Bedford Swifts 7 - 97 Leighton Buzzard Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club played in the Bedfordshire senior Cup this weekend the first Round Match against Bedford Swifts was the first time the Buzzards had played in the cup for nearly 20 years.

Traveling to the International Athletics Stadium in Bedford the Leighton side had a few young faces and quite a few changes from the last league match against Market Rasen and Louth. They faced Bedford Swifts who play 3 levels below the Buzzards in Midlands 4.

The home side started well and kept possession from the Buzzards but the visitors were quick to pounce on any mistake and were soon on the scoreboard after 4 minutes when stand-off Wheeler kicked through on a dropped ball and allowed Irwin to score the first of five tries. This was converted by Jordan Marshall. Leighton received the kick-off and with slick passing put Braybrook through to score a second try in as many minutes. Again Marshall converted and it was 0-14 with only 5 minutes gone. Swifts then tried to keep the ball tight and managed to get a series of penalties which pushed them deep into he visiting 22m area. A catch and drive at the line put them over to score, with the added conversion making it 7-14.

Buzzards though were not worried and started to turn the screw, not allowing the home side any chance to settle and forcing errors in all areas of the park. Tries followed for Ross Bevan, Gerrard Collins, making only his second appearance for the Buzzard firsts, another two for Euan Irwin, Reece HarrisSmith, Jack Kempster and man of the match Ashley Walsh made the half time score 7-52. Marshall converted four of them.

The second half started much like the first with Swifts trying to keep the game tight but more unforced errors and allowed Darren Braybrook, Matt Stacey, Ollie Taylor, Mike Robert, another two for Euan Irwin and a final try for Jack Kempster, with four conversions from Marshall. The final score was 7-97 to Buzzards. All credit to Swifts who kept playing to the end despite being on the wrong end of a high scoring game. It was great to see the mixture of youth and experience for the Buzzards with young Ben Johnson making his first appearance, along with youngsters, Jack Kempster and Kieran Turney. While Gerrard Collins made a good impression in the front row.

Received Contributions A doctor in the psychology department at John Radcliffe over in Oxford was doing his normal morning rounds, and he entered the ward to find one of his patient’s sitting on the floor, sawing away at a piece of wood with the side of his hand.

Meanwhile, another doctor’s patient was also in the room, hanging from the ceiling by his feet. The doctor asked his own patient what he was doing, sitting on the floor, as he was.

His patient replied in an irritated fashion, “Can’t you see? I’m sawing this piece of wood in half!”

So the doctor enquired, “And what is the fellow hanging from the ceiling doing?”

“Oh. He’s my friend, but he’s a little bit crazy. He thinks he’s a light bulb.”

The doctor asks, “If he’s your friend, don’t you think you should get him down from there before he hurts himself?”

“What? And work in the dark!”

I’m sure this has been used before but it does seem somewhat apt at this time: A Physician, an Engineer, and a Politician were discussing who among them belonged to the oldest of the three professions.

Each one of them thought they had this in the bag.

The Physician said, “Remember, on the sixth day, God took a rib from Adam and fashioned Eve, making him the first surgeon. Therefore, medicine is the oldest profession.”

The Engineer replied, “Don’t be so sure as, before that, God created the Heavens and Earth from chaos and confusion, and thus He was the first engineer. Therefore, engineering is an even older profession than medicine!”

So then, the Politician, who had been holding his counsel, spoke up. “Yes yes, this is all well and true.” he said, “But who do you think created all of that chaos and confusion?”

Time Gone By - Midlands 1 East The last time Buzzards played Old Scouts in the was on the 7th January 2017 when Buzzards won 62 - 5 at Wright’s Meadow. At half-time Buzzards led 43 - 0. In the second half Old Scouts came out with increased vigour but within 7 minutes Buzzards scored their 8th try. Old Scouts battled on and were rewarded with a try. With 6 minutes left Lee Walker (no longer of this parish having moved to another) became the 7th Buzzard player to score. Earlier in the season it was a different story, Buzzards lost 34 - 7 with Chris Forbes (another player who has disappeared) scored Buzzards try. Buzzards record did not look good; played 3, lost 3 and were the foundation team of the league with all others above with just 12 points for and 103 points against, it didn’t look good.

Dickie’s Drivel Weaponised White Wine A massive Mention in Despatches must go to Freddie Proctor, a regular attender at pre-match lunches as a member of ‘Darkie’s Mighty Motor Pool’, for his performances at the last two lunches.

As if his amorous advances towards Meg Reeves’s grand-daughter at the Players’ Reunion wasn’t impressive enough, his weaponising of white wine on the following Saturday was even more so. However, what was most impressive was that he not only managed to ‘emit’ the aforementioned white wine into someone else’s lap but the lap in question was his boss’s!

It wasn’t quite ‘all hands to the pump’ but never in the field of drinking, well not since Zak Tift did it in the Members’ Bar a few years ago, has so much liquid been expelled at one time by one human being. There was blood, toil, sweat and nearly tears involved in the clear up with all the resources of the LBRFC clean-up crew, including Dave the Steward and his wheeled bucket, having to be bought to bear on the collateral damage.

The wider membership may not agree with me but I think we should have more people like Freddie in the Club, because, as I said to Dave at the time, he makes me look good!

My apologies for harking back to Chris Pearson’s passing but this got me thinking upon the nature of heaven and hell. Although I’m almost certain not to end up there, I’m not sure I’d not get on with heaven - too many do gooders, goody two shoes and God squaders for my taste.

I’m not alone, I’ve since discovered, in having such irreverent thoughts, as Mark Twain said “Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company”.

And, of course, the upside of hell would be there being plenty of ne’er-dowells and wastrels that I enjoy the company of, probably sitting around a still using the ambient heat to concoct some illicit hooch.

The Norse word ‘Valr’, which forms the root of the first part of ‘Valhalla’, roughly translates into Old English as ‘carnage’. As I see it, there are two different kinds of carnage. There’s the good carnage that you want to see out on the pitch and then there’s the bad, Freddie-esque carnage that you don’t want to see in the clubhouse. Hopefully, unlike last time, we’ll get to see more of the former and less of the latter this afternoon!
