A special welcome to our visitors from Long Buckby. It has been a long time since we played Long Buckby league and as far as I can recall it was the early noughties. Both sides will be seeking bonus point wins today but for very different reasons; whatever the result let’s hope that we see a well-contested game.

Following last weeks loss to Sharnbrook and Colworth House, the 2nd XV are away at Hitchin today, looking to get back to winning ways.

If anyone fancies another dose of rugby this weekend, the U18s are at home tomorrow in the OBB U18 League against Milton Keynes RFC. It is an 11 am kick-off and the lads, coaches and supporting parents will be more than pleased to see extra touchline support from the wider club.

Buzzards 38 - 15 Vipers Six Try Buzzards Overcome Vipers Second-Half Bite

Leighton Buzzard stay four points clear at the top of Midlands 2 East (South) league with their latest bonus point victory against Leicester-based Vipers.

Although Buzzards scored six fine tries, this was at times a rather scrappy performance as Leighton’s concentration appeared to lapse. Credit is also due to Vipers who belied their lowly league position with a competitive and skillful second-half performance.

Buzzards kicked off downhill in dry conditions and no discernible breeze.

In under two minutes, and with their first attack, Harri Sayer was about to score when the referee called play back for a crossing obstruction earlier in the move. However, the home crowd did not have Arran Perry long to wait as a wellworked move after four minutes put strong-running winger Arran Perry under the posts. Lee Walker converted to make the score 7-0. Perry added a second try five minutes later, fending off a couple of defenders after taking a well-judged “kick-pass” from fly-half Walker, to score in the corner. The difficult conversion was missed to leave Buzzards 12-0 ahead. Despite their difficult start, Vipers were becoming increasingly competitive and pulled the score back to 12-3 with a penalty after fifteen, following a Buzzard offside.

The following fifteen to twenty minutes were contested in mid-field but, as last week, the Buzzard scrum was becoming dominant. Two tries towards the end of the first half put Buzzards in control and secured the four-try bonus point. Firstly Harri Sayer made the initial break and combined well with James Brett to score.

Both tries were converted to give a commanding half-time score of 26-3.

Now playing downhill, Vipers started the second-half with renewed endeavour. After only three minutes, a good move in the backs created space for their rightwinger, who breaking through a couple of attempted tackles, scored in the corner. Worse was to follow for Buzzards; a driving maul from a lineout led to another Vipers score and,with this second try converted, Leighton were only 26-15 ahead with over half-an-hour to play.

Harri Sayer There followed the most intensive part of the match the visitors buoyed by their comeback and Buzzards determined not to let the lead slip. It was over halfway through the half that Leighton re-asserted control, when after a period of intense pressure, Man of the Match, Eddie Wiggins, scored Buzzards’ fifth try to make the score 31-15.

In the closing minutes Buzzards showed commendable ambition, choosing to run penalties rather than running the clock down. This spirit of adventure was rewarded with five minutes left when Danny Snowden scored following a number of line breaks and concerted pressure. James Brett converted to make the final score 38-15.

Buzzards will be pleased with a bonus try victory and six fine tries and a good performance from the tight forwards.

However, they will know that at times concentration was lost and also too many penalties and turnovers were conceded.

John McDougal Points of Law Refereeing the Scrum

When I refereed I used to find deciding who had collapsed a scrum one of the more difficult decisions. This was particularly the case during the set and the initial phase of the scrum, although the relatively more regulated set procedure of the past few years has undoubtedly reduced offences at this point. However, once a scrum is in play and moving the offenders are easier to spot; changes in binding, angles, hip position all are helpful indicators.

Watching our games it is clear that a number of referees are finding it difficult and it remains an area where mistakes, sometimes embarrassingly poor ones, are frequently made. Last year at Peterborough we were being driven back a number of yards by a big pack and ultimately stood up. The referee gave us a penalty to much bemusement. One of the worst I’ve seen but it happens too often.

So here are a few guidelines; firstly work out who is in control and observe whether difficulties only happen on one team’s put in. After all, if you are in control why cause difficulties on your own scrum? Also, look where collapses happen, I remember a game where I was the referee assessor; two scrums collapsed both on defending side put in and both less than 10 metres from their line. It makes it easy to draw conclusions. Too often I think referees are considering single scrums in isolation, they need to see the pattern a wider perspective gives.

I find it inexcusable that referees don’t penalise standing up in the scrum.

If your scrum is going backwards there are three ways to stop it, all illegal; collapse it, wheel it or stand up. Collapsing is dangerous as the drive will continue over you; a wheeled scrum that is reversing tends to disintegrate with back rows losing binding so standing up is often the easiest. It should be a penalty and it is easy to spot. It may appear that both sides have stood up, it’s difficult not to if your opposition front row has already but the circumstances are obvious. After all you don’t stand up if you driving forward.

In my view, referees at the top level are getting much better at this, look at the World Cup final; Jerome Garces quickly assessed who was in control and applied the law. In the Premiership, most referees do likewise and penalise the retreating pack. At level 6 and 7 too often the decision goes the other way.

Dickie’s Drivel In having driveled on for as many years as I have now, there ae two things that have constantly surprised me - the first being that some people actually read these pieces and the second being that I’ve not received more complaints.

So, following ‘Cougar-gate’ a few years ago, it was an even greater surprise that the second formal complaint that I’ve received regarded the absence of a ‘Drivel’ in last week’s Match Programme rather than any contentious content!

This came from Janet at the Programme’s printers, Rush & Warwick, so it’s reassuring that at least someone along the production line keeps an eye on the content - and may be even proof-reads it! (Janet or Tony, can you spot the deliberate error later in this article? If you do, and as my preferred stationary supplier, I’ll add an extra staple to my usual monthly order!)

But, on a serious note, you won’t be reading this without Tony and Janet Jackson at R&W’s hard work, so please support them for your printing or stationary needs. (Janet always is but sometimes even Tony’s a pleasure to deal with!)

Anyway, I had the privilege of watching the Programme being printed a few Fridays ago. Remembering a previous era in which the LBFRC Programme was likely to be bound with an elastic band (no names, no pack drill - Hugh O’Kane!), I was particularly impressed with, and reassured by, the stapling machine!

However, they’re just one of the not so visible aspects, amongst so many others, that makes the LBRFC match day experience what it is, alongside which the Programme Editor, Steve Draper’s input and, arguably, even harder work in putting the Programme together should also not be Page 24 of 36

forgotten. (Though, of course, as a contributor. to quote Mandy RiceDavies, when, during the infamous Profumo trial, she was being cross examined after Lord Astor denied sleeping with her - “Well he would [say that], wouldn’t he?”)

All of the above having been said, I apologise for the lack of a ‘Drivel’ last week. Though it wasn’t the reason for this, that for my and others’ absence from the lunch was a visit to the Tutankhamun exhibition.

This was most educational, if only for learning that King Tut’s parents were brother and sister and he was married to his half-sister. So, ancient Egypt was like Wing!

Also, according to ancient Egyptian beliefs, my lifestyle is such that when I die I’ll either be devoured by a beast with the body of a rhino and the head of a crocodile or reincarnated as a dung beatle and spend all day rolling s**t - so, if the latter, there’ll, literally speaking, be no change there then!

At one of the exhibits, a father turned to his son and said “That’s probably the oldest thing you’ll see in the whole of your life”. I have to admit I wasn’t sure whether he was referring to the exhibit or the person stood next me - Robbie Robinson!

In the meantime, the 1st XV continues its winning ways - despite some players being absent from training. When I asked one player recently on a Thursday evening why he wasn’t at training, he came out with possibly the best, or poorest ever, excuse for this, being “As you’re in the bar, it must be Wednesday!” - his having observed that I’m regularly in the SVRA bar on Wednesdays but not so often on Thursdays. No names, no pack drill of course! May be the player in question was just ‘tyred’ after a hard day at work.

Time Gone By It has been a long time since we played Long Buckby in the leagues (Midlands 3 East South) and as best as I can determine from the RFU records, on a website that is slowly growing on me, it was way back in 2002/03. I wasn’t at either of the games that season (I was still playing).

In the season Buzzards notched up 65 points and conceded 19 to Long Buckby. The results were; 14th December Buzzards 34 - 19 Long Buckby and just a month earlier 16th November Long Buckby 0 - 31 Buzzards.

Buzzards finished 3rd in the league and Long Buckby 10th.

In the previous season the contest was a bit closer with Buzzards scoring 49 points and conceding 29 to Long Buckby. The individual results 12th January 2002 Long Buckby 17 - 29 Buzzards, 10th November 2001 Buzzards 20 - 12 Long Buckby. Long Buckby finished 3rd in the league and Buzzards 5th.

Each year more than 20,000 children flee domestic abuse to seek sanctuary in refuge. Typically leaving home with only the clothes on their back, these children have experienced physical, emotional, and even sexual abuse and arrive at refuge with nothing. In collaboration with Women’s Aid, partner charities

and corporate supporters, KidsOut works to remind these children and thousands of others living with disadvantages what it is like to be children and just have fun.
