RFC for today’s League match.

Welcome also to our other guests and thank you for your continuing support. The players and committee really appreciate your attendance.

Following the long journey up the M1 last week to Belgrave, the 1st XV are looking forward to returning to HQ for today’s game.

During the week we have played host to Northampton Saints RFC who held one of their rugby camps, attended by around 40 youngsters who received some top-notch coaching. Not only that but they were visited by several of the Saints 1st team players giving them something to really aspire to.

We have also recently hosted a First Aid in Mental Health Awareness course for several of our club coaches and officers, and also guests from other sports clubs in the area. We have been highly commended for leading the way in this provision amongst sports clubs on this very important issue and I’d like to thank Stuart, our Director of Rugby, for arranging and organising this valuable addition to our training portfolio.

Another exciting venture to let you all know about is our 25/25 Club (see page 10). We are aiming to get 25 businesses or individuals to sign up for £25 per month to help increase club revenue. We already have several businesses signed up including Purity Productions Limited and Red Bird Tutoring. If anyone wants or knows of anyone that would like to find out more about becoming one of our company supporters then please contact Pippa at commercial@buzzardrugby. co.uk.

Tomorrow we host Dunstablians and Bletchley mini rugby sections in the morning followed by our first Halloween Party for the youngsters. I’m looking forward to hearing all about how it went as sadly (!) I’m unable to attend the party....what a shame!

Belgrave 25 - 31 Buzzards Second Half Revival Puts Buzzards Top Buzzards moved to the top of Midlands 2 East (South) league with this bonus point win. However this was Buzzards’ poorest display of the season, with Leighton finally taking the lead in a scrappy game with only fifteen minutes left.

Harri Sayer Leighton kicked off and almost immediately conceded the opening try to Belgrave’s first attack. Whether it was the journey or a number of changes to the team, Buzzards appeared lacklustre and there was little surprise when they conceded a second try after fourteen minutes. Neither try was converted, leaving Buzzards losing 10- 0.

It was seventeen minutes before Buzzards put together a period of attack, although Zak & Ashley Tackle they were unable to score points as a penalty attempt drifted wide. Shortly after both sides went down to fourteen men for ten minutes as Owen Forsythe and the Belgrave hooker were both shown yellow cards after a fracas. Finally, after thirty–three minutes, Buzzards opened their account with the ball going through many hands to put Harri Sayer in space to score by the posts. Eddie Wiggins converted to make the score 10-7. Belgrave responded with a Page 5 of 40

well-worked try but again missed the conversion. Almost immediately good pressure through many phases gave James Brett the opportunity to score Buzzards second try. Again Wiggins converted to leave Buzzards a single point behind at 15-14 at half time.

The Buzzard pack was under pressure from the big Belgrave pack, a situation not helped

by an injury to influential numbereight Zak Tift late in the first half.

A lost scrum early in the second half gave Belgrave the opportunity to extend their lead to 20-14.

Whilst Buzzards were now playing with more spirit and purpose they were struggling to build pressure.

This was mostly due to poor ball retention in the loose but also a scrappy lineout and pressure on the scrum.

However, with ball Leighton always pose a threat. A fine break by captain Jack Whitehouse led to a Euan Irwin try midway through the half to cut the deficit to one point, 20-19. Five minutes later the cutting edge in the backs was effective as Whitehouse and Irwin again combined to put Harri Sayer in for his second try. Eddie Wiggins’ conversion gave Leighton a 20-26 lead. Belgrave remained competitive and, after a period of pressure on the Buzzard line, their forwards rumbled over to cut the Buzzard lead to a single point, 25-26 with ten minutes left.

Leighton were now playing their best rugby of the match and following an attack of numerous phases and good decision-making, Jack Whitehouse scored Leighton’s fifth try. Buzzards comfortably played out the remaining minute to

secure a 25-31 victory.

Leighton will be happy with a bonus point away win against good and motivated opposition. However the defence and ball retention needs to improve and also the habit of starting slowly away Ieuan Thomas from home needs to be broken.

Congratualations Congratulations Mike Robert and partner Lauren on the birth of their son Finley weighing in at 7lb 11oz which in proper measurements is 3.49kg. Finley made his appearance on 15th October just in time for an early breakfast at 4:19 am.

Congratulation again to Lauren and Mike; Finley sadly you don’t get to choose your parents.

Congratulations to Ieuan Thomas are not the order of the day, Ieuan’s opposite number seemingly missed placed his handshake and restyled Ieuan’s nose. Let’s hope Ieuan’s week has been a bit better and he grabbed the sympathy vote during interviews. Head coach Tom was heard to remark in the club bar “pity about the nose, he was a good looking fella”, well Ieuan someone luvs ya.

Harold Lad’s Tales of the Expected I received a number of contributions on the RWC2019 and Brexit this week but decided that publish I would not! I did, however, decide to use Harold Lad’s unexpected contribution. “Suffice to say the remainers have left and the leavers remain. In the rugby world rankings our remainer in 4th place drops to 5th place, the leaver in the number 2 slot departs to 3rd place with the old 3rd place leaver rising to 2nd position and finally our other remainer, remains in 9th place. So by my reckoning almost all got something out of the Brexit RWC except poor Ireland who wanted to remain but has left.

So all is now clear. Of course by the time you read this the situation could well have changed but nothing resolved.”

Under 7s, 8s & Fledglings The U8s, U7s and Fledglings enjoyed a superbly organised training session at a cold and blustery Aylesbury RFC on 20th October. Despite the obvious interest in the Rugby Wold Cup quarter finals that were showing at the same time, parents nonetheless turned out in force to support the teams, all of whom seems to be having a lot of fun.

There were a number of games played during training that were new to all of the LB players such as ‘Fishermen’, ‘Wizards’ and ‘Doughnuts’ which brought smiles from all the minis, the Fledglings in particular enjoyed dodging the padded ‘doughnuts’ as they were rolled at them by grinning coaches.

At the end of the training session the Aylesbury head coach gave out a pair of medals for the players that epitomised the TREDS principles and our very own Zach Venn was awarded one for stopping to help one of the opposition players after a mid-play collision left him hurt. Zach rushed over to check he was ok and help him. The coaches admired his spirit of fair play as well as his tally of tries and tags captured.

It was also nice to see a large number of girls among the Aylesbury ranks, which helped to make our Leighton Ladies feel right at home. A huge thank you must go out to Aylesbury for the great session and we look forward to heading back to their club in April for the Aylesbury RFC Festival.

John McDougal Points of Law Refereeing consistency One thing that has impressed me at the World Cup is that the referees have consistently applied the laws, particularly at the breakdown. It appears to me they have also been consistent in not applying some laws, for example, backs encroaching offside, lazy runners retreating slowly have both been consistently ignored.

Twenty years ago there was a huge difference between Northern and Southern hemisphere refs; those with good memories may be able to recall and compare Jim Fleming (very strict at breakdown) with Paddy O’Brien (Laissezfaire advantage to the side with the ball). That North/South divide has all but disappeared.

One thing that has not been consistent has been the use of the TMO. I have no idea what the directive is but I presume the ref retains the final decision. Here are three very different examples of TMO use (and in one case declining to use the TMO).

Firstly Jerome Garces; England v Australia. Towards the end of the game Australia had appeared to score a consolation try but Garces wanted to check for a forward pass. Before he could see it the TMO told him there was no clear forward pass. The ref then looked and over-ruled him. Overbearing TMO but excellent refereeing.

Secondly Jaco Peyper; Wales v France. On the decisive try in the Again the TMO was very firm in his opinion and the ref seemed reluctant to look further. I’m not saying the decision was wrong but surely the ref should have made the crucial decision and taken his time.

Thirdly Wayne Barnes; South Africa v Japan. The SA tight head lifted his Japanese opposite number through the horizontal in the tackle. Everybody thought it would go to the TMO, (almost every other ref would have done) – but Barnes had a great view, decided that the Japanese player wasn’t dropped or speared into the ground and he landed on his shoulder not his head. Yellow Card – let’s get on with the game. Well done Wayne Barnes.

Harold Lad’s Tales of the Expected John Tarbox, deaf and blind. John has admitted to and demonstrated that he is both deaf and blind. At the recent intermediate cup game John asked who are Buzzards playing but didn’t hear the reply and like old folk was too embarrassed to ask again. Buzzards were camped on Stratford upon Avon’s try line, they play in black and white hoops, he was heard to shout great tackle number 17. Astonished Buzzard supporters reminded John, who by now had forgotten he’d asked ‘who are Buzzards playing’, that’s the opposition, Buzzards have a bright red Buzzard logo on the left hand breast. By the time John had reached the clubhouse he was pleased that Buzzards had beaten Beds Ath. Page 24 of 40

Time Gone By We last played Bugbrooke at M1E level 27th January 2018 here at Wright’s Meadow winning 20 - 6 on a wet and windy day. Buzzards scored three tries through Wills Messum, Jordan Cummins and James Ward with Darren Braybrooke slotting a conversion and a penalty.

Earlier in the season Buzzards took their tally of loses to five on the trot going down 42 - 10 with a second half collapse. Early in the game Tom Byard went off with a shoulder injury and he hasn’t played since. Buzzards were 10 nil down before Eddie Wiggins made a break, passed to Reece Harris-Smith who passed to Matt Stacey, Braybrooke converted. Braybrooke converted a penalty later in the game. Eddie Wiggins left the field with a knee ligament injury that kept him from playing the remainder of the season.

Bugbrooke finished 12th in the league and were relegated.

Dickie’s Drivel With ‘Movember’ being imminent, when I first started to think about writing this piece, my intended theme was going to be ‘Dodgiest Facial Hair of the World Cup’ and I was going to provide photos of the offending culprits accordingly.

There was a sufficient number of (suffice it to say, poor quality) candidates to have given you a pictorial rogues’ gallery but, for the sake of the Club’s finances, not only image rights and copyright but also international libel laws had to be taken into account, so no piccies to support it, I’m afraid.

However, my top offender is (wait for it but definitely not deserving of a drum roll) Aussie reserve scrum half Nic White.

I’m sorry Nic but, as a scrum half, your top lip should be used in conjunction with your bottom lip to gobshite referees and not carry the full weight of a dead rodent’s fur. Worst of all, it’s cricketer Merv Hugheslite and doesn’t cut it accordingly.

Most seriously, though, it says to me that the Australian players aren’t being paid enough, like their cricket-playing counterparts, who have, on and off, been in conflict with the Australian Cricket Board for decades over their remuneration. This is why their highest profile players of the time, such as Rodney Marsh, Dennis Lillee and Greg Chappell, had ‘taches similar to, but better than, Nic White’s in the 1970s. It was because they had to supplement their income as porn actors. I’m hoping that Nic isn’t having to do the same between seasons but, I’m sorry, that top lip face fur just doesn’t look right on a No 9.

Otherwise, with France having imploded in the second half of their quarter final against Wales, my brother, Patrick, reminded of my comment when Germany crashed out of the Football World Cup last year - “What’s the German for ‘schadenfreude?” and added Page 30 of 40

“What’s the French for ‘laissez faire’?” I suggested that he write to Monsieur Vahaamahina and ask him what the French is for ‘noncombatant’.

Whilst it’s tempting to suggest that our Gallic neighbours to the West didn’t win the match and those to the East lost it, I won’t, as it might be construed as being inflammatory, as may articulating that such unpredictable ‘cheese-eating surrender monkey’ behaviour, as was displayed by the French team, is sufficient justification for the UK to leave the EU. Instead, I’ll leave Bonkers Bonker Boris and Drunker Juncker to sort that out.

In mentioning ‘schadenfreude’, of course, our neighbours to the North didn’t even make it to the quarter finals. In this regard, I understand it’s written into Scottish law that, before they leave, Nicola Sturgeon instructs any departing Scottish World Cup squad to buy their postcards at the airport when they first land in the host country and write them on the bus to the hotel, so that they can then be posted on arrival and reach home before the team returns!

Meanwhile, a couple of weeks ago I received an email from the Club asking me to attend a Mental Health training session. I know, as I write this, that I shouldn’t make light of or be flippant regarding such a serious issue but my innate paranoia means that my first reaction to it was whether I was being asked to attend as a student or as subject matter. My second thought was that such ‘care in the community’ is already, and has always been, a ‘raison d’etre’, excuse my using French, for the pre-match lunches, as a haven for our attendee ‘Crumbly Cronies’, given that Meals & Wheels don’t deliver, and the Library shuts at 4pm, on Saturdays.

It is, though, at the cost of being serious, to the Club’s credit that the welfare of all generations is sought to be taken care of and/or catered for.

That said, modern practice seems to be for nappy changing facilities to be made available. I leave it up to the General Committee to decide which of the extremes of the generational spectrum these be targeted at.
