Leighton Buzzard RFC v Bedford Athletic RFC 30th September 2017, Kick Off 3:00pm Welcome one and all to another round of Midlands 1 East rugby. A warm welcome to our guests, players and supporters from Bedford Athletic. Although they were relegated last year they appear to be making a good case for promotion again this year, but it is still early days.

Last week our first team had a hard day in Leicestershire against Syston. A ground where we have never had much luck. As with our visitors today they were recently relegated and were obviously used to playing at a higher and stronger level. With our new coaching structure we are still a long way from where we want to be but things are definitely moving in the right direction and we are looking forward to another strong performance on the pitch.

A big thank you to John McDougal our 1st team manager and resident wine expert who did not make the trip to Syston last week but stayed behind to referee the second team game and allow nearly 40 people to have a game of rugby. This was a result of not getting a referee from the society and not having any referee’s within the club willing to step up.

We are looking forward to having our vets out for the first time in quite a while so If you fancy a trot out please let us know and we will add your name to the list of players.

Experience Pays Dividends As Leighton Lose To Syston Syston 27 - 15 Leighton Buzzard For the second time this month Leighton took one of the long away trips, this time to Leicestershire to play recently relegated Syston. This time without 1st xv manager John McDougal who volunteered to stay and referee the 2nd team game to allow 40 players to get a game of rugby at Leighton buzzard Rugby Club.

Having played for a number of years at a higher level the speed and accuracy of the Leicestershire men was soon apparent and with a strong scrum and well oiled lineout they soon found themselves 12-0 up against the traveling team from Bedfordshire. Unfortunately the captain, Mike Lynch, came off second best after a tackle and had to retire injured after only ten minutes on the pitch.

Leighton had to shuffle the front row but were soon able to fight their way back into the game with Tom Mowbray going over for the first Leighton try of the afternoon.

12-5. The remainder of the half was a hard fought affair but on the stroke of half time,

with the home side st pressing Leighton’s line Jacob Barker was stuck at the bottom of a ruck, penalised for not rolling away and given a yellow card.

Syston were unable to capitalise from the penalty and the half time score was 12-5.

After the break Syston made their way into the Buzzard 22 and were rewarded with a penalty which they converted to extend their lead. 15-5.

Full Back Ben Beaumont was having to make a huge number of tackles and clearance kicks. From a lineout Syston spread the ball wide and scored in the corner to make it 20-5. For the next twenty minutes Leighton competed well and were making breaks against the home side but were unable to get on the board. Syston took advantage, this time with a converted try to gain the bonus point for four tries and extend their lead to 27-5.

Using the bench and working to the Leighton strengths, Ben Beaumont Leighton came back into the game and after a break from scrum half James Ward was caught just short of the line quick work enabled Tom Mowbray to go over for his second of the afternoon. With minutes to go and pressing the home team line after Page 6 of 36

1st XV Ed Wiggins broke down the left wing, Leighton spun the ball wide for Arran Perry to score from the right.

Conversion missed making the final score 27-15.

Leighton lost against good opposition but in a much improved performance.

Received Contributions As I was lying around, pondering the problems of the world, I realized that at my age I don’t really give a rat’s posterior, anymore. (A holiday is a perfect time for reflection. Or maybe that was just the bottom of the pool?)

If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

A whale swims all day, mainly eats fish and drinks water, but is still fat.

A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years, while a tortoise doesn’t run and does mostly nothing, yet it lives for 150 years?

And you tell me to exercise? I don’t think so. (And they’re both vegetarians to boot!)

Just grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to remember the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Now that I’m older here’s what I’ve discovered: • I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

• My wild oats are mostly enjoyed with prunes and all-bran.

• I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart.

• Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded.

• Some days, you’re the top dog; some days you’re the lampost.

• It was a whole lot easier to get older, than to get wiser.

• If all is not lost, then where the heck is it?

• I wish the buck really did stop here; I sure could use a few of them.

• Kids in the back-seat cause accidents.

• Accidents in the back-seat cause kids.

• It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere.

An elderly(ish) Italian man - let’s call him “Mario” - went to his Parish Priest and asked if the Priest would hear his confession ...

“Of course, my son,” said the priest.

“Well, Father, at the beginning of World War Two, a beautiful woman knocked on my door and asked me to hide her from the Germans; I hid her in my attic, and they never found her.”

“That’s a wonderful thing, my son, and nothing that you need to confess,” said his Priest.

“It’s much, MUCH worse, Father; I was weak, VERY weak .... I asked her to pay for the attic with ,,,,, well, sexual favors and she accepted,” continued the old man.

Colts Rugby Stockwood Park U18 40 - 45 Leighton Buzzard U18 Leighton Buzzard started the game with high intensity and took the challenge to the Stockwood Park players from the starting whistle. Buzzards were rewarded for their efforts with a well worked try after just 5 minutes. George Burr touching down following some strong running lines and effective offloads within the forwards, converted by Louis Beer. Buzzards continued with this pressure, with backs and forwards combining well with a succession of more offloads and supporting lines of running. They were quickly rewarded with another try at the 10-minute mark from Louis Beer, also adding the extras. Fifteen minutes in again saw Buzzards on the scoreboard, this time Harry Charter being rewarded for the team’s hard work and persistent pressure, converted by Louis Beer. Stockwood Park soon woke-up and started to capitalise on the mistakes and complacency of the Buzzards team, scoring a converted try at the twenty-minute mark. Stockwood Park utilised their strong runners well, scoring a converted try four minutes later after some uncharacteristic missed tackles from Buzzards. Buzzards took the restart and were quickly back on the ascendency after an effective chase was regathered and some successive offloads putting James Brett over the whitewash.

Soon after the half time break Buzzards scored a well worked converted try through Louis Beer. Stockwood Park took the contest back to Buzzards with some strong running from their powerful forwards and elusive backs, scoring twice in quick succession following some poor defensive errors. Stockwood Park were encouraged with the close score line at 28 – 33 and proceeded to challenge the Buzzards side. Stockwood Park’s excitement soon over-spilled and a penalty try was awarded to Buzzards following a high tackle on Rhys Richards. Dane Richards scored half way through the second half, following some accurate passing and good support play. This failed to deter Stockwood Park, who continued to attack Buzzards and were rewarded with two late tries and a conversion.

An entertaining and high-scoring game from the Buzzards players with many positive performances and areas identified for improvement.

John McDougal Points Of Law Accidental Offside This year’s Lions tour to New Zealand will long be remembered with one of the main talking points being the end to the third test. Referee Romain Poite appeared to change his mind and an initial penalty decision was altered to a scrum. I don’t intend to argue whether he was right or wrong but to set out the actual law so you can decide.

Firstly the offside rule in general play . Law 11 states “ A player is offside if the player is in front of a team mate…… who last played the ball” . A player in an offside position is liable to a penalty sanction if he interferes with play or moves towards the ball.

As you will recall Liam Williams knocked the ball forward in attempting to catch a kick and the ball bounced forward to Ken Owens standing approx 2 metres away but crucially in front. Owens momentarily caught the ball and then dropped it.

Under the definition he was clearly offside and clearly interfered with play. So Penalty ? – well perhaps not. Before deciding we need to look at law 11.6 – this states “when a player cannot avoid being touched by the ball…. the player is accidentally offside”. In this case the game restarts with a scrum.

So the issue is whether Ken Owens could not avoid being touched by the ball. If he couldn’t, then scrum / if he could then penalty. My view is that if it had just hit him then definitely scrum but by catching the ball, albeit momentarily, he weakened his case. After all you can avoid catching a ball.

But my final two points is firstly that rugby’s laws are complicated and one of the game’s strengths is the way referees interpret them – much as the authorities try the game can never be completely homogeneous. This crucial decision shows this point –strangely both possible decisions could be correct and only the referee can decide. Secondly, whatever the law, it felt right in the spirit of the game .

Time Gone By - Midlands 1 East The last time Buzzards played Bedford Athletic in the league was on the 3rd March 2012 when Buzzards lost 13 -25 at home. Earlier in the season, 29th October 2011 Buzzards lost 24 - 13. At the end of the season Buzzards were relegated to M2ES, two seasons later Buzzards were promoted to into South West 1. Bedford Athletic topped M1ES the following season and spent the following season in National League 3 Midlands but returning to M1ES for the 2014-15 season.

Dickie’s Drivel Returns Mextedballs Regular readers may remember me mentioning, on previous occasions, a former boss of mine, Nick Emmins, who used to liven up our team meetings with a stream of mixed metaphors and other verbal ‘bloopers’.

These ‘Emminsballs’, as they became known, after Private Eye’s ‘Colemanballs’ column, included such pearls of wisdom as “We can talk about this until the cows go blue in the face”, “We can kill many birds with very few stones with this” and “Denis Compton - Greatest Living Englishman - except he’s dead”.

However, the closest he ever got to a rugby-related bon mot was “We shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater but should run with it for a while and then kick it into touch if we have to”, so I offer you a selection of Colemanballs out of the mouths of rugby union commentators and personalities.

Each year more than 20,000 children flee domestic abuse to seek sanctuary in refuge. Typically leaving home with only the clothes on their back, these children have experienced physical, emotional, and even sexual abuse and arrive at refuge with nothing. In collaboration with Women’s Aid, partner charities
