Welcome Welcome to the 2019 Annual Seashore Open House Tour

We are delighted to celebrate this, the 53rd year of our Annual Seashore Open House Tour here on Long Beach Island. Boris Blai Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural facility. Dr. Blai and his team of Founding Members dreamed of and built the LBIF building and campus. They engaged Philadelphia architect, George Daub, to lead the way by creating one of the first modern architectural statements on LBI with the design of our iconic building and its distinctive roofline. This building is centered on 21 spectacular acres with a splendid wetlands vista. So began the collaboration of artistic expression on LBI; art, architecture, landscape design and science, all working together. The Homeowners We hope that you are inspired and exhilarated as you tour the beautiful homes that are showcased on this House Tour. These generous homeowners invite more than 700 people into their homes and share, both inside and out, their unique design ideas with us. We, at the LBIF, are very grateful to them for opening up their personal sanctuaries for this special day.

The Volunteers In addition to thanking our special homeowners, there is an outstanding steering committee led by our House Tour Chair, Ginger Black. She and her dedicated team of captains and docents have worked tirelessly all year long to make the House Tour a success and without them this event could not be possible. Our Patrons Thank you to our members and patrons for joining us for this very special annual and treasured House Tour. With your support we can offer creative programming and unique events. Your support equals sustainability for the LBIF. Our Mission The LBIF Annual Seashore Open House Tour is our largest fundraiser. All funds raised by the House Tour go directly toward financing the essential operations of the LBIF, allowing us to continue to meet our mission of offering innovative arts and sciences as well as a variety of cultural programming to the community year-round. With sincere gratitude to all, Daniella Kerner Executive Director LBI Foundation of the Arts & Sciences 1

House 1 Don Russell

House 3 Craig W. Brearley Architect

Don Russell’s training as a landscape architect is evident in the way he integrated his homes to their surroundings. He created privacy for his clients by his use of plantings and often incorporating a hidden courtyard. Don believed that every window should have a view of the water, trees or the sky. His homes have a low profile which gives them a sense of intimacy and belonging to the environment.

CWB Architecture, named AIA Jersey Shore Firm of the Year in 2016, was founded by Craig W. Brearley, AIA. We service a number of market segments; especially the residential market of LBI. CWB has been instrumental in the reconstruction of the Shore Area, having completed 1,200+ projects since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Houses 2, 4, 5 Jay Madden Architect Since 1989, our eight-person firm collaborates with mostly Long Beach Island clients to design and help build their dreams. We aspire to quality, professionalism, sustainability and community with our clients at the center of all effort.

Studio Tagland has been creating distinctive dream homes on LBI for over 20 years. The practice functions as a team, encouraged and inspired to be cooperative partners, good listeners and creative problemsolvers.

Meet the Builders House 1 Homeowners The owners of this bayfront home, built in 1958, managed the 2017 renovation and did much of the work themselves. They also designed the landscape plantings and designed and built the outdoor living spaces. With some 35 years experience, they take pride in designing and building homes and landscapes that complement their natural surroundings.

House 4 A. Richard Aitken, Jr., Builder Contractor Our mission is to offer our clients peace of mind - whether building their castle in the sand, upgrading it with a major renovation, or providing routine services - knowing they have chosen a builder who will stand by them in the years to come. Building custom homes and lasting relationships on LBI is what we do best.

Houses 2, 5 J.T. Tilton Construction Co., Inc. The history of our construction company has deep roots on Long Beach Island as third and fourth generation natives. We are dedicated to fiscal responsibility and quality craftsmanship. In recent years we have been fortunate to build the “biggest and best on Long Beach Island.

House 6 Patrick Moeller of Callan & Moeller, Inc. For over thirty years Callan & Moeller has been building premier homes on Long Beach Island. Led by Patrick Moeller, a lifelong Island resident, it has earned a reputation for building many of the finest homes on the island. Every house is built as though Patrick and his family will be living in it. His passion for building and his attention to detail has converted scores of clients into lifelong friends.

House 3 Thomas J. Keller Building Contractor LLC This year, we are pleased to celebrate 40 years of custom coastal homebuilding on Long Beach Island. We have delivered more than 700 beautiful and unique homes since 1979, from coastal cottage to waterfront masterpiece. Our customer-centered team continues to provide clients/homeowners with the highest levels of service, integrity, technical competence and financial stewardship.

Four Quick Tips Four quick tips to make your 2019 House Tour memorable

Tip One Before you start the Tour, thumb through the images of each house. Ask yourself, “What do I want to get out of this? Am I looking for ideas for my bathrooms or my backyard? Or, how can I custom renovate my little Cape Cod hideaway?” If you identify the homes that provide some answers, it will help you remember designs and services that are relevant tomorrow. Tip Two Spread out. We expect hundreds of people on tour today. Your enjoyment and comfort are our primary goals as you visit each home. You don’t need to start at the north end and go south. All homes are open from 10:30 to 4:30.

Check the map on page 7, and start where you like, but make a conscious choice. There may be a shorter line just around the corner. This year, there are three homes clustered in Loveladies, one in Harvey Cedars, one home in North Beach and one in Surf City. If the first home you come to looks particularly jammed with cars, move to the next, then circle back.

4

Tip Three Early in the day, plan where you want to have lunch or dinner. On page 29 of this Tour Guide, there is a list of restaurants who know you’re out there today! Be sure to call ahead and ask if they have Tour Specials. Tip Four See page 6 which has all the directions and rules to make your visit pleasurable, exciting and informative. Hopefully, this will make your day enjoyable. Today is all about you. Thank you for coming. We hope to see you again next August 2020.

When the owners stumbled upon this abandoned guest house, it was completely hidden behind an overgrowth of wild greenery. Upon discovering that the property was available for purchase, they embraced the urge to update this fabulous Don Russell mid-century modern ranch. The couple knocked down walls, repurposing every inch of space to create a practical, comfortable home. The vaulted ceilings create an open, inviting feel with its simple elegance, offering stunning views of Barnegat Bay from just about every room in the house. Two guest bedrooms are designed and appointed to maximize space while offering simplicity and comfort. A free-standing guest suite is located just off of the second bedroom in its own little private hideaway across the courtyard. The former garage turned master suite features a sitting area and a clever walk-in closet with laundry. Step outside to the naturally landscaped backyard offering provisions for entertaining guests and enjoying life on the water.

When long-time homeowners replaced their cute little house with a larger one, their goal was to optimize the stunning bay view. A tile patio leads to the inviting entry with wood plank ceiling made of knotty cypress. Light white oak hardwood floors complement the blended palette of soft, tranquil colors throughout. This reverse living layout offers five luxurious bedrooms with two suites on the second floor and a master suite on the third. Ascending to the main living area, appreciate the alternating baluster design on the staircase and statement chandelier. Stepping into the open concept living space, take in the breathtaking bay views as you stand beneath soaring custom barrel windows. Note the kitchen’s custom glass tile backsplash with abstract wave pattern, which draws the eye around the space. The large porch affords spectacular views at sunset and the backyard features an outdoor kitchen, dining and play area with options for sun or shade.

Thank you. A Word of Thanks This is the seventy-first year of the LBI Foundation and the fifty-third year for the house tour. The longevity and success of both would not be possible without the continued support and dedication of the members, volunteers, advertisers, staff, sponsors and, in the case of the house tour, the homeowners. Those people number in the hundreds each year, and in the fifty-three years in the thousands. Volunteers Thank you to the House Tour steering committee consisting of our dedicated House Tour captains as well as the following individuals who offered their time and talent: Dianne Ahto, photographer; Jeannette Michelson, photographer; Tracey Cameron, graphic designer; Rick Bushnell, selection chair; Carol Nussbaum, artist. The following additional photographers added further to the beauty of our publication: Ryan Marchese, Rob Melone, Carly Michelson, Chris Pfeil, and Matt Reitinger. House Captains Thank you to the house captains: David Costain, Denise Avagliano, Lesha Moore, Monica Shaw, Lona LeSchander, Debbie Floyd and Cathy Sutton; they scheduled all the volunteer hosts and hostesses and worked with our homeowners.

LBIF Staff The LBIF staff tended to numerous details for us: thank you to Denise Petti, Lydia Owens, Christine Mesagna, John Imperiale, Katheen Ries, Lauren Proscia, Curt Gray, Daniella Kerner and the amazing front desk staff and summer interns. Sponsors We are so grateful to our sponsor, Woodhaven Lumber and Millwork, for our house tour preview event with architect Jay Madden, builder Rick Aitken, interior designer Kristin Nissen. Thank you to the architects, builders and designers who helped find the homes and demonstrated their art and science expertise that brought these lovely homes to completion. Homeowners Finally, thank you to our homeowners who allowed us into their interesting and beautifully designed homes to learn more about how this is all accomplished inside and out. We hope you enjoy this day as much as we have enjoyed creating this event for you and the Foundation. Ginger Black House Tour Chair
