SUMMER 2023

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DEAR LBIF COMMUNITY,

In 1948, thanks to the bold vision of Boris Blai and his friends, a merging of arts and sciences unlike any of its kind was formed on a tiny barrier island off the coast of New Jersey known as The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences.

The Foundation was LBI’s first cultural center; an organization whose mission continues to grow to this day. In reaching this important 75th year milestone let’s plan for the future to nurture vibrancy of the arts and sciences, and to remain a lively convener and catalyst for creativity and knowledge.

I wish to thank our dedicated Board, our wonderful staff, the committee chairs, and the hundreds of volunteers who make all these events and programs found in these pages possible. Thanks to the business community who we value and partner with. Thank you to our non-profit partners in the sciences and the arts, who help us build a stronger community. Thank you to our visitors who come through our doors, year-round. I hope you return again and again. And finally, a sincere thank you to all our Members and their families, both our longtime members and our new members, who keep LBIF alive and thriving each year because of their commitment, involvement, and love of the LBIF. It is this continued support that sustains the Foundation now and enables us to expand our mission and impact.

How lucky we are to have an institution devoted to bringing to the community new experiences, artistic innovation, preservation of our special landscape cultivated and nurtured by our scientific community, and the varied humanities and social activities which connect us all. LBI has been such a happy place for generations of families. Please help preserve all that has been accomplished for the past 75 years, and to build a better place for all our children, their children, and future generations.

I look forward to sharing a renewed and wonderful summer with you at the LBIF. Building a strong institution that strives for excellence requires passion, involvement, and commitment. Our work is ongoing and with your help we hope to make our small world a better place for all, year round, and stronger than ever before.

My very best wishes to all,

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT THE BOARD

FELLOW MEMBERS,

What a difference a year makes! While 2021 was a struggle, with every operational decision being informed by COVID, 2022 was essentially a return to normalcy. We had wonderful weather, a full slate of art and cultural activities, sold out children camps, a return to an in-person House Tour, and so much more.

As we prepare for the 2023 season, it might be helpful to reflect on what we accomplished in 2022 These projects were funded through various grants and the extreme generosity of the members who contributed to our Annual Appeal:

✔Replaced the roof on the main building;

✔Replaced the floor in the main building;

✔Replaced the doors in the main building;

✔Replaced the windows in the main building;

✔Purchased new playground equipment for our children and grandchildren; and

✔Replaced a main air conditioning unit in the main building.

My priorities for 2023 are little changed from 2022. Despite our success building our membership, we can’t rest on our laurels. Our membership continues to be the lifeblood of the Foundation and we must continue to nurture and grow it. We need to constantly replenish our membership outreach by encouraging young families to become LBIF members. These young families will help sustain the Foundation for the next 20-30 years. So talk to your friends and neighbors. Educate them about all the Foundation has to offer for people of all ages. Bring them to the Foundation to visit. Send them to our new and vastly improved website to see for themselves all we have to offer. I am convinced that if we can engage them at some level, we can persuade them to join us as members.

Similarly, fundraising is critical to the sustainability of the Foundation. Membership dues, tennis and camp revenue contribute to our operating budget, but capital improvements are only possible through the generosity of our members. We sincerely thank those families who have made gifts to the Foundation in addition to their yearly dues and we hope you will continue to keep us in mind during our next Annual Appeal.

As you know, the Foundation has an outstanding tennis facility. But in my view our members deserve more than just wonderful facilities. They deserve an experience that both compliments and supplements those physical facilities. Our new tennis and pickleball pros have designed an array of new offerings to enhance your membership experience.

And now, as we are hopefully turning the page on COVID-19, it’s time to look forward with a renewed sense of hope, optimism and fellowship. In that spirit, I would like to encourage and challenge you all to lean in to help ensure an even brighter future for the Foundation. We can all contribute in some way, whether large or small; financially or in less tangible ways.

The 2023 year marks a very important milestone in our history. This is our 75th anniversary season and we have some wonderful events planned to mark and celebrate the occasion. I encourage every member to contribute whatever they can—whether time, expertise, in-kind or monetary donations—to make this diamond anniversary special.

I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past few years. We have returned the Foundation to a stable fiscal footing and I remain confident that we are well positioned to flourish for years to come. Here’s wishing you all a safe and healthy 2023 and the best summer of your lives.

Sincerely,

LBIF HISTORY

Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural center. Blai, a student of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the founding Dean of Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a unique facility that would foster individuals, and their talents, while enjoying summertime at the Jersey shore.

Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Rivne, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 Blai arrived in Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. After coming to America, in 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. In 1935 he founded The Tyler School of Art, Temple University’s degree granting art school located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania where he remained Dean until his retirement in 1960.

The LBIF has continued Blai’s vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences. Though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a yearround organization providing a place for learning, free expression, new experiences, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.

.Celebrating LBIF’s 75th anniversary in 2023, we recognize our past Presidents, who along with their board of trustees, staff, members, volunteers, and supporters have enabled the LBIF to remain the cultural anchor of this region. To mark this milestone, we recognize these Presidents who gave of their time, vision and wisdom to sustain LBIF and its priceless 22-acre campus.

Let’s talk about the Design Process and take this journey together.

THE LBIF IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH THE CONSERVE WILDLIFE FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY

We are proud to continue our partnership with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey (CWF) that will help support and strengthen our science-based initiatives with emphasis on rare wildlife, including wildlife surveys, habitat management, and public outreach. Activities include migratory and nesting bird surveys, northern diamondback terrapin monitoring, and wildlife habitat enhancement. CWF will also provide three weeks of wildlife-focused summer camp led by the biologists who carry out the organization’s mission to preserve rare and at-risk wildlife in New Jersey. We will work together to ensure that LBI is a sustainable home for vulnerable wildlife species, and a place whose residents and visitors are engaged in the natural world around them.

Nature + Forest Therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, or its English translation: Forest Bathing. Although structured, the practice allows many opportunities for creativity and serendipity offered by both nature and by the individual inspiration of the guide. Our walk will draw on the latest developments in the field of nature connection, and ancient traditions of mindfulness and wellness promotion. The walk takes approximately 2.5 hours and requires no exceptional skill or physical exertion.

*NOTE: Participants are required to register by 3:00pm the day before the scheduled session.

From Awe to Action: How Art Helps Animals

Date Tuesday, July 11, 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Fee $15

Renowned conservation photographer Melissa Groo will touch on her journey into photography, sharing favorite photos from her magazine assignments and personal work over her decade-long career as a professional photographer. She’ll discuss how photos can aid in conservation, how to best gain an audience with birds and other sensitive animals, and how noticing the natural world around us can greatly enrich and enlarge our lives. Hosted by Long Beach Island Foundation, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, Little Egg Foundation, and Osprey Foundation.

Melissa Groo is a wildlife photographer, writer, and conservationist. She’s passionate about conveying the marvels of the natural world to diverse audiences. She believes that photography can be both fine art and a powerful vehicle for storytelling, and considers herself a “wildlife biographer” as much as a wildlife photographer. By capturing and sharing stories about individual wild animals, she hopes to raise awareness and change minds about not only the extrinsic beauty of animals, but also their intrinsic worth. Melissa’s photographs and articles have been published in numerous magazines including Smithsonian, Audubon, Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife, National Geographic (online), Living Bird, and Natural History.

THE NATURE TRAIL

Explore the hidden beauty of our property via the Nature Trail.

A short walk on this trail will take you from a small maritime forest to our preserved saltmarsh and eventually Barnegat Bay. Along the meandering trail you will come across a mix of both native and non-native vegetation, which is home to a variety of wildlife. Native trees and shrubs, like red maple, winged sumac and northern bayberry found along the trail play an important role in providing suitable habitat for migratory songbirds to forage and find cover throughout the year. Many disturbed areas along wetland edges become overwhelmed by invasive plants, like phragmites or common reed as you will see along the Nature Trail. Once you descend onto the coastal saltmarsh, you will be immersed in Barnegat Bay, quite literally depending on the tide. If you look around you will see plenty of birds, including black-crowned night-herons, great blue herons, saltmarsh sparrows, and nesting ospreys. If you look closely you will see fiddler crabs in the marsh and schooling baitfish, like banded killifish and mummichog in tidal creeks. Locals say that the island is held together by poison ivy. Please stay on the trail and watch for it along the upland portions. Leave only footprints. Carry in; carry out.
