INTRODUCTION

PROBLEM STATEMENT A healthcare facility to treat people who are blind or visually impaired, the project consists of approximately 50,000 SF among 3 floors, located in Prague, Czech Republic. This thesis focuses on materiality, light, and color to design a new facility for Praga Medica that can effectively advance vision treatment worldwide while also supporting the needs of people with vision impairments locally.

THESIS STATEMENT Light, color, texture, and material differentiation used effectively in an interior space creates clarity, independence, and personal empowerment for people with vision impairments, allowing them to live independent and productive lives.

THE CLIENT The vision center is a branch of Praga Medica, a highly respected world provider of top quality healthcare. Established in 2009, Praga Medica is a medical tourism provider for people seeking medical services outside of their home country. The vision center treats patients from all over the world who travel to Prague for consultations and treatment from specialty ophthalmologists.

SITE ANALYSIS

The building is located at the corner of Resslova and Karlovo Nám. Directly in front of the building is a metro stop, bus stop, and large park. This provides an accessible location with relief from buildings and noise.

The building consists of a main central zone with 2 extending wings on each end. The majority of the exterior walls are glazing with a light shelf attached to the exterior to reduce glare. A courtyard exists between the 2 wings of the building.

The front facade of the building faces East towards the main road, metro stop, and park. The longest arm of the building receives light directly from the North, minimizing glare on the longest stretch of the bulding.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Channel Vision Clinic in Prague, Czech Republic will provide consult and treatment to people with vision impairments from around the world in an understandable space that supports the user’s needs. As a tourism hospital, the hospital will also reflect the cultural identity of Prague to promote travel, exploration, and to give the interior environment a sense of place.

The design is inspired by Prague’s famous Charles Bridge- the most popular tourism view in the city and the main connection point between the Old Town Square and the Lesser Town with layers of streets leading to the Prague Castle. It is both a means of crossing the Vltava River and an experience itself with iconic views, vendors, and cultural events.

The experience of crossing Charles Bridge creates clarity in the layout of the city. As people cross the bridge, they experience visual openness and relief from the busyness of the buildings in the city while seeing the layering and contrast of materials ahead in Old Town Prague. Along the bridge, vision is channeled with lined statues and streetlights leading the eye to towers at either end of the bridge as dominant visual landmarks.

The design captures this prominent moment of openness and linear connection between the 2 wings of the building to orient and direct visitors with vertical circulation representing the 2 towers at each end. This bridge space connects a hub on one end acting as the Old Town Square with paths on the lower wing leading to the “castle.” Line, rhythm, and selective use of vibrant color define paths and zones for visual clarity and to promote the beauty and culture of Prague from within the clinic.

The open atrium space connects the 2 wings of the buildings and the 3 floors with visual openness and connection and reflects the characteristics of the Charles Bridge. Stairwells on either side of the atrium act as the 2 stone watch towers.

Floor Plan Notes The atrium space connects the 2 wings of building and the 3 floors, and it creates visual openness allowing visitors to orient themselves in the space. The large windows connect to courtyard views and bring in natural light Registration booths allow for patient privacy, and the registration staff area connects to a separate employee entrance.

Some exam rooms are extended longer in order to properly conduct vision tests for children with a wider visual field. There are several extended exam rooms on each floor.

Floor Plan Notes Exam rooms are located on the interior of the building to allow maximum control of light for proper vision tests. The layout creates a secondary pathway to allow physicians to move quickly through the space without patient interruption. This also reflects the conceptual idea of the layered streets of Prague Nurses’ stations and physician’s offices are located along the windows to optimize natural light for employees Flooring changes dictate the primary public pathway, the secondary pathway, and private rooms.

This differentiation creates greater organization and clarity for patients with low vision.

Floor Plan Notes The surgery center is located on the third floor for optimal privacy for patients. Pre and post surgery rooms and operating rooms are closed off from public access.

The administrative wing is also closed off from public access while allowing seamless connectivity between administrative and research spaces. Private offices remain interior to the building to reflect the concept but have glass fronts to allow greater visibility and natural light.

The administrative wing has its own bathrooms to allow for separation from public use.

BUILDING ENTRY The building is located at the corner of Resslova and Karlovo Nám in New Town Prague. Located right by a metro stop and bus stop and across from a large park, the clinic is easily accessible to visitors.

Signage Bold, contrasting, lower-case letters create clear, legible signage for visitors with low vision. This font is used throughout the space and meets ADA signage guidelines.

MAIN LOBBY Visitors enter into the main atrium space that reflects the visual connection and openness of Charles Bridge. Visitors experience the feeling of walking along the stone pathway perceiving the water on each side and the stone watch towers at each end.

Lighting and ceiling features reflect the linear directionality and the layering of Prague’s buildings and streets. The atrium is a connection point and an individual, unique experience as the hub of the space with lounge seating and views to the outdoor courtyard.

CAFÉ The café acts as the “Old Town Square” of the first floor - a communal area along the upper wing of the building.

Layering and texture in the 3form wallcovering and layered ceiling soffits reflect the layered Prague steets and storefronts in the Old Town Square.

A variety of seating options including armchairs, banquette seating, and booths support patients of all abilities.

OPTICAL SHOP The optical shop is the retail space of the building where patients can be tested for and purchase different eye glasses after their appointment. This space includes display cases, consultation tables, a reception desk, and storage room.

OPEN ATRIUM

Walkways along the atrium include photography of Prague to enhance the experience of the pathway, and the contrasting columns reflect the linear rhythmic elements along the bridge. The atrium feature ceiling references the bright, open sky seen above, connecting the two sides of Prague.

Visual Clarity The contrasting railing and baseboards assist in defining the pathway for patients with low vision. An important consideration is separating wall and floor surfaces to clearly indicate the direction of travel.

EXAM ROOMS + WORKSTATIONS

Hallways and waiting areas include linear lighting fixtures highlighting the direction of travel and assisting with wayfinding.

Indirect cove lighting is also used to further enhance the path and minimize glare.

Exam rooms and photography rooms include adjustable downlights to give physicians maximum control while conducting vision tests.

WAITING AREAS

Waiting rooms located on the second and third floors act as the “square” and “castle” spaces - destinations that help visitors orient themselves in the space.

They are located between specialties to provide connection and reduce the number of staff needed in these areas.

Each waiting area includes a variety of bariatric seating and artwork to provide peaceful visual distractions.

ADMINISTRATION

The administrative wing is private from the patient areas and includes several offices, gathering spaces, and a breakroom at the end of the building wing. This space includes a kitchenette, dining tables, and a TV lounge area for small gatherings.
