NEXT SATELLITE OFFICE Atlanta Beltline | Fall 2020 | 8 weeks | Steelcase-Sponsored NEXT satellite office in Atlanta, Georgia focuses on wellness and connectivity between employees in different locations. The company uses technology to promote meditation, relaxation, and self-improvement, and this new space seeks to reflect company values in focusing on the safety and wellbeing of employees while growing the brand through the sharing of diverse perspectives from different offices. The Pandemic has significantly increased the number of employees working from home, and this change has taken a toll on physical and emotional health of employees with less movement and limited access to ergonomic furniture. The post-pandemic workplace must reflect employees’ needs to feel supported and connected in the community.

Located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, NEXT satellite office is inspired by Atlanta’s Beltline Project to transform 22 miles of unused railroad tracks surrounding the downtown area into walking paths and opportunities for community connection and involvement. This transformation of industry into wellness creates a juxtaposition between urban and suburban as people walk along the paths. The Beltline Project continues to break down barriers in Atlanta as diverse neighborhoods are connected and people feel the freedom to move and explore.

The satellite office reflects the Beltline’s contrast with vibrant spaces for community involvement and individual spaces for rejuvenation. Communal areas connect to the trail’s dominant side that draws tourism and street art, while quieter areas reflect the developing but still connected zones.

Circulation reflects the continuity of the Atlanta Beltline and encourages employees to “take a lap� around the office as a break from working, promoting wellness, movement, and connectivity of employees.

The eastern side of the Atlanta Beltline is vibrant and energetic, drawing tourism and gathering. The right side of the space reflects this vibrant energy off of the entry with the stairwell and raised platform inspiration zone, encouraging employees to take the stairs. As employees move throughout the space, they encounter various work, social, and respite spaces located strategically with views and natural light.

The NEXT logo speaks to the continuity of the Atlanta Beltline, the connected path around the office, and the connectivity of the company as a whole between employees at different offices and the surrounding local communities. The vibrant community spaces bring in pops of bright color in upholstery to tie to aspects of community involvement and connection while still connecting to the natural greens and wood.

The inspiration zone is the focal point upon entry into the space, highlighting the company’s brand. The raised platform, flexible seating, and interactive displays allow for serendipidous collaboration at a pivotal moment in the space. The NEXT brand and company culture is showcased through a technology screen and wellness magazine display case.

Work Cafe

The feature staircase connects the inspiration zone to the workcafe- the 2 most vibrant areas in the space. By bringing the vibrancy of the inspiration zone down to the energy of the first floor cafe, the design encourages movement between floors and reflects the company’s mission for wellness.

Individual work areas provide a variety of seating options to support different postures and levels of separation. The open office work areas include screens to support social distancing and flexibility. Ergonomics plays an integral role in wellness in the workplace. Various comfortable sitting and standing options creates desire for employees to work in the office instead of working at home.

The continuous pathway has an exposed ceiling and linear lights to reflect the feelings of openness along the Beltline trail.

Employees experience both the energy from within the trail and the peaceful, respite spaces along the windows. Walking along this path gives employees a space for wellness and the opportunity to safely connect with coworkers, creating serendipidous moments of connection and collaboration that are not experienced when working from home.

PHOENIX PUBLIC LIBRARY Evoking Wonder | Spring 2020 | 12 weeks

With a new public library, the city of Phoenix, Arizona seeks to expand its collections and better serve the needs of the community with a human-centric gathering space for the diverse Phoenix population. This library will serve as an educational hub for children, teens, and adults from different economic backgrounds. The Phoenix public education system is one of the worst in the nation, and the new branch library will provide educational resources as a means of creating space for future growth and potential in the community.

In order to foster a future-oriented mindset that progresses the community forward, the Phoenix Public Library acts as a place to promote creativity and learning among users of all ages, opening eyes to opportunity and possibility, and evoking a sense of wonder for learning. The design encourages exploratory and interactive thinking as a place for people of all ages to reach for the stars.

Central gathering space

The space is designed around 3 learning zones- places of self and group exploration, where various classes and workshops are held throughout the day for children, teens, and adults. Their bright colors and flexible usage evoke curiosity and engagement among library users to promote involvement. These rooms activate the surrounding areas, connecting the excitement of learning throughout the space.

Flexibility is considered to create engaging, user-focused spaces that can adapt over time to the needs of a changing and growing community. DIRTT construction allows for integrated technology and whiteboard walls as well as simple future reconfiguration.

A Ceiling Element in the children’s area connects recessed downlights, referencing constellations and the irregularity of stars. This idea is seen throughout the space in a glazing pattern on the mezzanine railing and the DIRTT Willow Glass feature wall.

Material and color choices enhance and draw attention to and reflect the energy of the 3 main learning zones.

Furniture selections encourage interaction and exploration through flexibility, variety, and choice.

LUXURY STADIUM SKYBOX Captivating the Magic of the Ordinary | Fall 2020 | 6 weeks American folk music is marked by ordinary people freely expressing ordinary realities while gathered together. It embraces the authenticity of acoustics and emerges spontaneously from groups of people singing together.

Stylistic expression defines the personal identites of the musicians and tells an authentic story. Husband and wife duo, Johnnyswim, captivates listeners by bringing their story of romance and their ordinary lives into their music creating meaningful reflection for listeners.

The concept reflects how the authentic and free flowing process of American Folk music makes people feel known, connected, and nourished.

Magic arises from space shaped to create serendipitous moments of both gathering and self-reflection and from materials used authentically. The space fosters the excitement and inspiration that dwells within ordinary comfort and familiarity.

The space is inspired by the structure of an acoustic guitar and how its raw, unfiltered sound formed from the relationship of a uniquely-shaped hollow chamber and parallel intersecting strings captures the essence of folk music.

The rounded bar area acts as the “hollow chamber,� open and central. The forms of the surrounding gathering areas react to the bar shape and reflect the rhythm set in place by the viewing platforms.

Entertainment Lounge Area

The Luxury Skybox is located within Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennesee. Johnnyswim was originally formed in Nashville, so the skybox connects the record label and artists back to their roots.

Custom built-in casework and natural materials contribute to feelings of comfort and familiarity and connect to the authenticity of the acoustic guitar.

The bar area acts as the “hollow chamber” of the first floor. The ceiling defines the space as a hub of circulation and gathering with vertical openness within the gold metal lined soffit. The bar is moveable to allow for flexibility and spacial openness when needed.
