Suffolks
We will offer for sale 35 Suffolk shearlings from a flock which has been selected over the previous 25 years for ease of lambing, lamb vigour at birth and rapid growth from grass.
Born in April and raised on grass, with no creep feed, the flock is Signet recorded and most of the rams are in the top 5% of the breed for Terminal Index.
Selected for natural fleshing and ability to thrive on forage
Used commercially for outside lambing on Blackhaugh but equally suited for indoor or outdoor lambing
Used as lambs
Bred for performance - growth and muscle from grass
Reputation for longevity and “shifting well” to other farms
SuffolkProfittraits
UsinghighindexTerminalsiresselectedfor“Easycare”traitshasbeenproven in numerous trials to increase profitability - Blackhaugh Suffolks also have high maternal indexes and will leave lambs suitable for retention as replacements.
*The dams of lots 19, 20, 31 and 33 had lost their tags, and because parentage could not be verified, they have been given low figures, but we are confident that these sheep have been bred and will breed similarly to their peers.

“Chevease”
The Chevease dates from 2002 when Easycare tups were first crossed, only once, with hardy Cheviot ewes originating from 5 hefts on Balnakeil, Sutherland. This cross has, over time, resulted in a fully shedding, 5 family, self-replacing composite flock which genetically is still predominantly 50% Easycare / 50% Cheviot.
Farmed in a commercial system on a commercial scale
Bred to be a profitable, low-input, maternal breed
All lambed outside from mid-April with minimal intervention
Tups for sale are all nursed twins, with most being used as lambs
Dual-purpose breed - Blackhaugh, a high upland farm, finishes all male lambs not retained for breeding, and has averaged over 19kgs across the last 3 years.
Self-contained flock to aid in avoidance of “iceberg” diseases
“Chevease”Profittraits
We believe that the reduction in labour associated with wool shedding has the potential to hugely increase efficiencies throughout the strong wool sector of the sheep industry, and the combination of wool-shedding with a maternal Cheviot-based package is a dual-purpose maternal breed with a desirablecarcase.
