Dear colleagues, Adversity defines who we are as leaders, and that has been true for us in 2020. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been so proud of how the LMH Health team has stepped up to this challenge. LMH Health has been closely involved with our community, continuing to provide outstanding care and services in collaboration with our partners. This work has been at our forefront of our efforts since early March 2020. Alongside these partners, LMH Health has efficiently provided vaccinations for thousands of community members. While I am so pleased with our organization’s response in the pandemic, it is also exciting to see how much we have achieved this year beyond that. Our results would exhibit a remarkable year even if we had not been simultaneously dealing with COVID-19. In 2020, we opened our West Campus — on time and under budget — to overwhelmingly positive reception. We forged new behavioral health partnerships with Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, Douglas County and many others to address crisis services in our community.

We significantly expanded our capabilities in robotic surgery, making us a leader in the region. We opened up our new clinic on South Iowa Street, rounding out our primary care presence in every sector of the community. Add to this the remarkable continued support of our Foundation, which had record philanthropic support to LMH Health initiatives of more than $4.3 million. My thanks to everyone who makes LMH Health such a wonderful community hospital. It takes all of us working together and I have been so proud to be a part of this team. With your partnership, we are ensuring the strength of LMH Health for the next 100 years.

The original plan for a modest place to care for those in need has grown to include a 174-bed hospital with the latest diagnostic and surgical technology, our new LMH Health West Campus outpatient facility, and 28 specialty and primary care clinics in Douglas, Jefferson and Leavenworth counties. We’ve worked to fulfill our founding mission by increasing access to primary care and specialty services that wouldn’t otherwise be available in our community, including world-class orthopedics, oncology, cardiology, robotic surgery and emergency care. Today, LMH Health serves as the largest safety-net provider in the community, supporting $25 million in charitable care each year. Here, your multidisciplinary care team is led by board-certified physicians with elite training at NCI-designated cancer centers and extensive experience caring for patients. As a team, we work closely with you, your family and our regional partners to ensure you receive the precise care you need to survive and thrive after a cancer diagnosis. Your partner for personalized cancer care You don’t have to travel far from home to receive exceptional cancer treatment. Our oncologists and hematologists have experience treating a wide range of cancer types, including solid tumors, hematological cancers and benign blood disorders. The center serves as a beacon of hope for all community members, regardless of their ability to afford care. According to Dr. Jodie Barr, oncologist at the LMH Health Cancer Center, the personal care and connection is what also sets LMH Health apart from the rest.

Clinical trials The LMH Health Cancer Center offers more clinical trials for cancer patients than any other hospital in the region. LMH Health is a member of the Masonic Cancer Alliance, which provides you with access to clinical trials and the latest advancements. LMH Health providers are on the leading edge of innovative treatment and emerging pharmaceutical science to care for patients with cancer.

Our patients have a sense of comfort when they come in for treatment and that’s because of our team.” Generous community support over the years through LMH Health Foundation has helped strengthen the LMH Health Cancer Center. Recently, this support has made possible a new cancer survivorship program and bolstered funding to charitable care.

Genetic testing and cancer screening ‘changed everything’ for local family Genetic testing and preventive cancer screening at LMH Health changed the lives of the Fritzel family. After a cancerous tumor was identified during a routine 3D mammogram, Cindy Fritzel took part in genetic testing at LMH Health. The test came back positive for BRCA-2, a gene that increases the risk of female breast and ovarian cancers, as well as recurrence of cancer over a lifetime. This positive result led other members of Fritzel’s family to be tested. Her father, two daughters and brother were also positive for the gene. Fritzel’s daughters began their preventive testing, including mammograms, which are recommended for women starting at age 40. At 34, her daughter Becca discovered she had the same breast cancer as Fritzel. Becca underwent a double mastectomy exactly two months after her mother. Fritzel was impressed by how quickly her personal LMH Health care team was assembled. Within six days, Fritzel had met with every provider she needed to complete her treatment, from her oncologist to her breast surgeon.

“Having cancer is such a whirlwind, but my appointments were set up so quickly and I didn’t have to worry where I’d go or what I’d do,” said Fritzel. “The process at LMH Health was convenient and the physicians are an intimate group. That made everything easier.” Dr. Sherri Soule, oncologist, believes that the coordination of care and “group approach” to oncology is a point of excellence at the LMH Health Cancer Center. All providers who treat cancer meet weekly to discuss cases and patients and ensure that everyone agrees on the treatment plans. Fritzel had experienced cancer care at a larger, Kansas City-area hospital while accompanying her father for treatments, but found her own experience at LMH Health to be more personal and comfortable.

Commission on Cancer accreditation In 2020, LMH Health received official accreditation from the Commission on Cancer. This award is given to hospitals that demonstrate high-quality, patient-centered cancer care that improves patients’ quality of life, recovery and survivorship. “The Commission on Cancer accreditation is a testament to the high-quality care that LMH Health offers its cancer patients,” said Dr. Soule. “It’s based on the work we’ve been doing here for years.”

Only 25 percent of hospitals in the United States have earned accreditation from the Commission on Cancer. LMH Health joins just 11 other hospitals in Kansas with this distinguished status.

These providers are on site and working collaboratively. The all-in-one center enables you to have screening mammography with diagnostic follow-up, consultation with a surgeon, and even a breast biopsy in one day, when preferred. Behavioral health Melissa Hoffman, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, is our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She provides care for new mothers and the management of psychiatric illness during events throughout a woman’s life, such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, lactation, infertility, perimenopause and menopause. She also started Build Your Village, a group at LMH Health that offers peer support for pregnant and parenting people to talk about mental health. 9

STATE-OF-THE-ART ROBOTIC SURGERY Orthopedic surgery with the Mako system Thanks to our generous donors, LMH Health acquired a Mako robotic arm in 2020 to assist the hospital’s orthopedists with knee and hip replacements. Dr. Adam Goodyear, an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoKansas, said the Mako system can be more precise than traditional surgical techniques because it can create a 3D model of each patient’s joint.

“Recent studies have demonstrated that patients have decreased levels of pain and shorter hospital stays when having a total joint replacement with the Mako system,” Dr. Goodyear said.

In spring 2021, LMH Health OrthoKansas earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for advanced total hip and knee replacement.

MATERNITY CARE

Surgery with da Vinci Xi technology Thanks to generous gifts from community donors, LMH Health is now home to two da Vinci Xi robots, the most advanced da Vinci surgical system available. From minor surgery to complex cases, our team has performed thousands of robotic-assisted procedures with unmatched precision since 2012, including general surgery, oncological, gastrointestinal, urological and gynecological surgeries.

CARDIOLOGY LMH Health completed a significant upgrade to our existing cardiac catheterization lab in 2019. This project included the installation of the most up-to-date equipment and technology available. LMH Health Foundation raised $1.2 million to make this $2 million project possible. Since the upgrade, LMH Health has doubled the number of coronary artery procedures performed in the cath lab.

LMH Health is now a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care. Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) designates these centers based on those who exhibit expertise and a commitment to quality care for vaginal and cesarean section deliveries. These centers demonstrate better overall patient satisfaction and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries. Blue Distinction Center+ providers are ranked highly for safety, efficiency and effective care.

PRIMARY CARE Exceptional, convenient healthcare throughout Douglas County has always been our goal. With multiple locations in and around Lawrence, Kansas — and an ever-expanding team of board-certified physicians and providers — LMH Health Primary Care is your most important connection to personalized care.

LMH Health now is planning to build a second cath lab that will enable LMH Health’s interventional cardiologists to perform procedures on two patients simultaneously, including emergency procedures. The second cath lab is estimated to cost approximately $2.3 million. LMH Health Foundation has agreed to raise $1.3 million, with the hospital funding the balance.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES Planning for the future For over a year, a steering committee of clinicians, administration and Board of Trustee members have been discussing the idea of a strategic clinical relationship and how it could benefit the patients and communities LMH Health serves. Such a relationship is a collaborative commitment to shared success between LMH Health and another organization(s), focused on clinical, strategic and operational improvements. We will align clinical programs wherever it is in the best interest of our patients. Respect, trust, innovation and commitment to mutual success will be vital. A strategic clinical relationship is about: • Growing and improving our services for the people in our community so our patients can get the care they need, close to home. • Working with our local providers and identifying clinical programs that need to grow locally. • A long-term commitment to keeping and growing the local, independent healthcare system our community wants. A strategic clinical relationship is NOT about: • Telling our clinicians where they must send patients for service. Providers won’t lose the ability to choose the best course of treatment for a patient. • Abandoning our vision for the future as an outstanding community hospital with a family-oriented culture. • Selling the hospital or turning over our governance or management to another entity or health system. This is a long-term strategic process, one that will support our mission as a tax-exempt charitable trust providing millions in charitable care each year. Providing exceptional healthcare for all is at the heart of all we do. This is the beginning of a conversation to explore a long-lasting relationship, not yet a commitment. It won’t be done tomorrow, next week or even next year. We’ll keep you informed every step of the way. Leveraging community support Record transfer of funds LMH Health Foundation provided a record $4.3 million of philanthropic support to LMH Health patients, programs and initiatives in 2020. This record year was made possible by you. Over 1,200 donors contributed more than $2.6 million to LMH Health in 2020 — one of the highest philanthropic giving totals in hospital history. The exceptional generosity of our donors ensures that our hospital and clinics remain among the very best in the country. Patient-centered technology initiative In 2020, Sue and Dana Anderson pledged a $1 million challenge gift to LMH Health for new technology that will benefit surgical and heart patients. Sadly, we lost Sue to leukemia in late February 2021, but her philanthropic spirit continues to inspire us all. The Andersons made their gift — which is one of the largest © SCHAUMBERG PHOTOGRAPHY philanthropic gifts that the hospital has ever received — to help fund the new Mako orthopedic robotic arm, two new da Vinci robotic surgical systems, and a second cardiac catheterization lab.

Partnering with community organizations To deliver health services when and where they are needed, we are forming community partnerships and working together to bridge the health equity gap in Douglas County. LMH Health is working with community behavioral health partners, including Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, Heartland RADAC, DCCCA and others to develop The Treatment and Recovery Campus of Douglas County. Additionally, the LMH Health integrated crisis team collaborates with several area agencies to connect our patients with needed services. Food insecurity is another partnership focus, and LMH Health is collaborating with Just Food in two innovative ways. LMH Health team members are conducting free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings at the food bank. Secondly, LMH Health emergency department social workers identify at-risk patients and give them a food kit from Just Food upon discharge. Ensuring patient safety LMH Health earned an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade in fall 2020 and spring 2021. This is the only hospital rating focused exclusively on hospital safety. Its A, B, C, D or F letter grades are a quick way for consumers to choose the safest hospital to seek care. LMH Health was honored to receive this grade, and we are proud to have an incredible team that strives to be patient first each day. “The data affirms our work to improve safety as well as our efforts to provide high-quality healthcare for our patients,” said Janette Kirkpatrick, vice president of Clinical Excellence at LMH Health. “Members of our team, in every part of our organization, make improving our quality and safety processes and outcomes a top priority.”

COVID-19 RESPONSE On January 27, 2020, LMH Health issued its first public statement related to COVID-19. As we continue to treat and vaccinate our community members in 2021, it’s easy to see how far we have come. At the same time, we know there’s a lot of ground to cover before this pandemic is over. We began sharing regular COVID-19 email updates with our LMH Health patients and partners in March 2020. The purpose was to keep people informed about LMH Health’s role in the pandemic response, and our goal has always been to provide transparency throughout an ever-evolving situation. LMH Health is just one partner in the collaborative, community-wide response to COVID-19. As a part of the county’s Unified Command, LMH Health joins leaders from Douglas County, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, the City of Lawrence and other entities in leading the comprehensive COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery. As decisions are made within our internal Incident Command, LMH Health and our partner organizations each have unique roles in supporting and carrying out associated plans. In early 2021, LMH Health and our Unified Command partners began implementing the COVID-19 vaccine in a phased approach as guided by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). We will continue working diligently — together — throughout this year.

Silver linings Scott Bruegge’s story On March 24, 2020, LMH Health received our first COVID-19 inpatient, Scott Bruegge. Treated by Dr. Krishna Rangarajan, a physician with Lawrence Pulmonary Specialists, Bruegge spent several weeks at the hospital regaining his health and was released in late April 2020. “I cannot say enough positive things about LMH Health,” Bruegge said. “This virus is just awful and being their first inpatient, they took every precaution to keep me and themselves safe.”

John Rathbun’s letter of gratitude For 35 days, John Rathbun was a COVID-19 inpatient at LMH Health. Each day, he made note of the nurses and technicians who helped him during his fight. Rathbun sent a three-page letter of gratitude to the hospital after being released: “Thanks to the gifted doctors, nurses, and therapists at LMH, I will now be able to enjoy those grandchildren for many more years because they truly saved my life and placed me on the course for complete recovery from a virus that was constantly changing and, as such, continually challenging. Attached to this letter is a list of every nurse, day shift and night shift, that watched over my care during my stay. I kept track of their names as I never want to forget them and what they did to give me back my life.”

Friends, 2020 was indeed a year of challenge on a variety of levels, but these challenges have also proven our capacity to be innovative and to adjust to the future. In 2021, we celebrate LMH Health’s 100th anniversary by affirming who we are as an organization and the principles upon which we were founded. We will strengthen health equity and inclusion across our organization, ensuring we take an equitable view as we make decisions. We will continue and expand our commitment to awareness, education and improvement that leads to a more inclusive organization, where people find a workplace that respects who they are and what they contribute and where all patients receive compassionate and skilled care.

In this year ahead, we will invest in our strategy of provider engagement as we build a sense of common purpose with our physicians, advanced practice professionals and hospital team. In this work, we will continue strategic development in key clinical areas with OrthoKansas, our new LMH Health Cancer Center, and our cardiology programs. We will expand to meet community needs through a unified primary care strategy and the exploration of a strategic clinical relationship. Our work in 2020 has reaffirmed who we are and who we want to be in the years ahead — a leading independent community hospital, locally governed and led, responsive to the needs of our community, and providing the most expert and compassionate care. That is an aspiration and a legacy that inspires us every day and to which we remain enthusiastically committed.
