Guided by the Purpose of Lawrence Memorial Hospital At Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association, we provide the opportunity to share in the hospital’s purpose through philanthropy. We build and secure financial support for hospital endeavors, charitable care and community health education.

Our goals for the future start with advancing the partnership between the endowment and the hospital by uniting around our shared purpose. Together with LMH leadership, health care providers and staff – and of course, our generous donors and volunteers – we are creating a destination for healthy living in Lawrence and our surrounding communities.

Dear Friends of LMH, With so many exciting things taking place at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, we’d like to take a moment to simply say, thank you. As leaders of the hospital and the Endowment Association, we know our vision would not be possible without the tremendous support of our community. To our generous donors, our dedicated physicians and associates, our selfless volunteers, and our esteemed community partners – we are honored to create a healthy community with you.

As you’ll see in the pages that follow, 2017 was an amazing year for LMH. Just over one year ago, we unveiled a new strategic plan called Destination Health, and we defined our purpose as, “A Partner for Lifelong Health.”

Since then, we have advanced many programs, partnerships and plans for the future, all with one shared commitment in mind: making your lifelong health our priority.

Now more than ever, we are united in our efforts to build a destination for healthy living in Lawrence and our surrounding communities.

Together we are finding new ways to transform your generosity into stronger alliances with every individual and family in our community.

Dana & Sue Anderson Born in Kansas during the Great Depression, Dana Anderson always told himself, “When I become successful, I want to help others achieve their dreams as well.” His wife, Sue, shares his philanthropic philosophy, and together they’ve helped countless people in and around Lawrence by giving to many charities, individuals and endowments, including the LMH Endowment Association.

Continuously Advancing Cardiac Care

LAWRENCE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ENDOWMENT ASSOCIATION

$1.2 million – that’s how much

our community contributed toward advancements for LMH’s life-saving cardiac catheterization lab in 2016-2017. Through the generosity of our 2016 Hearts of Gold Ball supporters as well as gifts from individuals and several foundations, together we raised the majority of funds needed for LMH to purchase a new, top-of-the-line system—the first of its kind to be implemented in a community hospital anywhere in the U.S. The new system will help more patients via new and expanded procedures, while even further decreasing radiation exposure.

Louisa Kamatuka As Director of Medical Nursing, Louisa Kamatuka helps others through her work at LMH every day – but that’s not the only way she helps people in need. Like many LMH associates and physicians, Louisa contributes a portion of her income to the LMH Employee Campaign. It’s one of many ways the people of LMH support one another and their fellow community members.

We are one big family, and families support each other in times of sickness, in times of financial need, and in our individual pursuits of continuing education and knowledge. I highly encourage all LMH associates to give if they can. When we all get together, as the ‘better together’ team that we truly are, we help this entire community a little more each day.

LMH physicians and associates contributed to the LMH Employee Campaign in 2017, together raising a total of $78,290. The campaign, led by staff volunteers, raised funds for three main purposes: helping hospital employees with financial challenges in times of medical or personal crisis, helping employees with continuing education costs and helping LMH patients in need.

Teeing Off for Surgical Excellence The 36th Annual Penny Jones Golf Tournament raised nearly for a new, state-of-the-art system that tracks

all surgical instruments to ensure each one is properly sharpened, sterilized and replaced. More than 50 businesses and 256 golfers participated, and one golfer won a new car for sinking a hole in one, courtesy of Laird Noller Automotive Group.

As part of its mission to improve lives, Black Hills Energy provides charitable and civic support in all 65 Kansas communities it serves. That’s the driving force behind the natural gas company’s commitment to Lawrence as a regular sponsor of the annual Penny Jones Golf Tournament benefiting LMH. Monique Pope, Community Relations Manager for Black Hills Energy and a graduate of KU in the 1990s, says it’s wonderful but not surprising to see how much growth LMH has experienced over the years. “LMH is more than a hospital – it’s an engaged community. There’s compassion, support, and many forward-thinking programs and services available to help people take care of their health,” she says. “It’s our privilege to be involved in supporting that.”

Finding Hope and Help

326 patients received financial assistance with medication,

transportation, home medical equipment and other necessities for healing and recovery after a hospital stay in 2017. This assistance, which is critical for people in need to ensure they stay on the path to healthy living and safe healing, is provided through the Help & Healing Fund, which is funded through private donations and the LMH Employee Campaign.

Kay & Monte Johnson

The Johnson family’s ties to LMH run deep. Over the span of 50 years, Monte and Kay’s children, and many of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were born at LMH. Ask them why giving to the LMH Endowment Association is important, and they will tell you it’s as much about supporting people as it is about supporting the hospital. “For us, philanthropy isn’t about feeling good personally,” says Monte. “The true reward is knowing how many people it serves – how many lives it helps.”

Monte says he and Kay feel very fortunate to help the community by supporting LMH. “Every time I’m there, I learn a little more about the quality of our hospital – and it’s very impressive,” says Monte.

“Lawrence may be a relatively small town, but we have a big-city hospital. We have very capable people providing us with excellent care, and it’s important to support that level of excellence to keep it going.”

Kicking Cancer as a Community

raised at the 2017 Rock the Block - Kick Cancer event will go a long way in keeping LMH on the leading edge of oncology care.

These funds support the purchase of new vital sign towers for patient care at the LMH Oncology Center, as well as greater access to mammograms and prostate screenings for low-income community members.

These awards ensure members of the LMH family have the financial means to further their education, which helps elevate the quality of care provided to our community.
