Historic research strives to preserve ‘50s style By Sara Shepherd sshepherd@ljworld.com

In post World War II Lawrence, modern architecture arrived in the form of sleek commercial buildings, monolithic university structures and unusual, geomet-

ric-inspired homes. Love them or hate them, historian and consultant Dale Nimz said, these buildings tell the story of what was happening to our city at the time: change. “There’s a great spirit of optimism and feeling of

progress,” Nimz said. “The town is booming, and there’s a lot of excitement about that.” Such midcentury modern buildings are now coming of age, at least in terms of becoming eligible for official historic designation. To

prepare for potential preservation efforts, the city has begun formally documenting modern architecture and its significance to Lawrence’s history. At the city’s request, Nimz Please see MODERN, page 2A

TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback on Thursday unveiled a grade-school literacy program that he said will reduce poverty, but children’s advocates criticized Brownback’s method of funding the proposal. “This is an investment in the future of Kansas. But Shannon Cotsoradis, president and chief executive officer of Kansas Action for Children, said that while improving literacy is important, Brownback shouldn’t use TANF money. “As the child poverty rate continues to climb, it doesn’t make sense to shift dollars away from struggling families to programs that focus on literacy later in a child’s life,” Cotsoradis said. “TANF dollars are meant to help the Please see READING, page 2A

Technology keeps hearing-impaired theater attendees in the ‘loop’ By Giles Bruce gbruce@ljworld.com

Vicki Douglas used to read the scripts ahead of time before attending plays. It wasn’t because the Lawrence woman couldn’t wait to find out the plot twists, but because she knew she wouldn’t be able to hear the performance. But now, when she goes to Theatre Lawrence, at least, she

doesn’t have to worry about any of that. During the recent construction of its new building, the theatre installed a “loop” system that allows people with hearing loss to listen to the performance through their hearing aids. The state-of-the-art system is only available in three locations in Kansas, all in Lawrence, according to Loop America. The under-construction Lawrence

Public Library auditorium and Marston Hearing Center are the other two. “It’s all part of making theatergoing as accessible for as many people as we can,” said Mary Doveton, executive director of Theatre Lawrence, noting that the new location also has accessible bathrooms, no steps outside and an elevator.

After a pregnant Lawrence woman’s water broke two months early, a friend started a fundraising campaign to help her while she misses work for a lengthy hospital stay. Page 3A
