The horse-drawn parade & other holiday highlights
By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com
Santa’s not the only character who takes hold of the reins during the Christmas season. While promises of flying reindeer can’t be made, there will be a whole lot of horses and riders — often in elaborate carriages — making their way down Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence on the first Saturday of December. It has become a tradition that at 11 a.m. on that particular Saturday — this year it is Dec. 6 — is when the Lawrence Old Fashioned Christmas Parade takes center stage. The parade is old fashioned because it shuns modern vehicles. The parade is one of the most unique in the nation because every entrant features horses or a horse-drawn vehicle.

Scenes from a few of Lawrence’s holiday celebrations last year.
Top to bottom: Santa descends from the roof of Weaver’s on Massachusetts Street; the menorah is lit outside the Lawrence Public Library; the stagecoach passes by in the Old Fashioned Christmas Parade.
It has been that way since 1993 when the then-owner of the historic Eldridge Hotel, a horseman himself, gathered with a few friends to contemplate what a holiday spectacle it would be to parade horses, festive wagons and carriages through downtown Lawrence.
That first parade featured 21 entrants, and the event has since grown to as large as 70 in some years. The parade also has done its fair share to garner Lawrence some national attention, including camera crews from RFD-TV often coming to town to film the event for its rural cable television channel.
Of course, the best way to view the parade is in person. Traditionally, more than 10,000 spectators descend upon downtown for the parade. Prime viewing locations are anywhere along Massachusetts Street from Seventh to 15th streets. Organizers — the parade is run by a group of local volunteers — said a particularly good area to view the parade is in South Park, just south of 11th and Massachusetts streets. The city places bleachers in the park for parade-watchers, and spectators can easily hear the parade announcer from that location.
Along other parts of Massachusetts Street, spectators often bring lawn chairs or blankets, or some who plan ahead and have an empty belly will snag a spot in one of the many outdoor dining locations that often are right along the street’s edge and provide a prime view of the parade.
People who are looking for a little less crowded area might choose to catch the parade from an East Lawrence street. The horses are stabled at the Douglas County Fairgrounds near 19th and Harper in far eastern Lawrence. The horses, wagons, and carriages travels along East Lawrence streets to get to the start of the parade, and also take those city streets to get back to the fairgrounds. The area near Seventh and New Jersey streets — near the Amtrak depot — is a spot nearly all the parade participants travel through as they are making their way to the parade.
As for what you’ll see once you arrive, look for a variety of horses and many wagons and carriages that range from traditional pieces of farm equipment to specialty outfits. Parade entries were still being finalized at press time, but past parades have included many historic and authentic frontier wagons, ranging from Wells Fargo stagecoaches to funeral hearses to covered wagons. Special mounted groups such as the Nicodemus County Buffalo Soldiers and various military and law enforcement units and their horses also have been part of past parades.
“We have at least five new entrants this year, which is great because it means we are replacing some who have retired,” said Marty Kennedy, one of the lead volunteer organizers of the event.
Kennedy said there are large new groups coming from both Nebraska and Missouri, with the latter particularly contributing several mules to this year’s parade.
“And, of course, we get entrants from all over Kansas,” Kennedy said.
One such entrant has the names to prove its Kansas roots. A two-horse team from Mankato, Kansas, sport the names of Rock and Chalk. They’ve been coming to the parade for the last 14 years, and were given their names because owner Gordon Murray knew they would be frequent participants in the Lawrence parade. This year’s parade, however, will be their last, as Murray has determined it is time to give them a rest from the hard work of parade pulling, parade volunteer Patty Kennedy said.
Marty Kennedy said organizers continue to be amazed and gratified at how

much the parade means to so many people in the region. Organizers estimate that about a half-dozen entrants have participated in all 32 parades.
“We wish everyone a Merry Christmas with this parade,” Kennedy said. “The city does a great job in supporting it.”
