County urges residents to register phones
Insight into a legendary leader
Information would help dispatchers in event of emergency By Stephen Montemayor
Douglas County emergency dispatchers are asking for help from residents to better pinpoint the location of 911 calls from mobile devices. Dispatch centers can draw a 50to 150-meter radius around a mobile call using information from the nearest cellphone tower. But getting additional information is a challenge, said Scott Ruf, Douglas County’s director of emergency communications. Typically, mobile calls reveal only the phone number and service provider. In fall 2011, Douglas County became the first in Kansas to subscribe to a third-party service called Smart911. Residents can create a profile at smart911.com, Ruf said, sharing as little information as their name and address or as much as information about vehicles they own, emergency contacts, whether a neighbor has a spare key and names and locations of bed-ridden relatives or those with special needs. That information is made available to emergency dispatchers if they get a call from a registered mobile user. Ruf said Smart911 also offers an optional service in which details such as whether

Great-grandson accepts Dole prize on behalf of Nelson Mandela By Elliot Hughes ehughes@ljworld.com
Luvuyo Mandela, the great-grandson of former South African President Nelson Mandela, said the lasting legacy of the globally renowned revolutionary is one of public service.
“The values, such as humanity, humility, sincerity, goodness of spirit and also a readiness to serve others are more intimate and personal goals that are worth achieving and worth fighting for, Luvuyo Mandela said, paraphrasing his greatgrandfather, Sunday after-
noon at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, where he accepted the Dole Leadership Prize on behalf of Nelson Mandela. “I think he, for this generation, would stand for a readiness to serve others, and the great part of it is our generation, we can do
it without risking our lives, Luvuyo Mandela said. About 100 people came to see Luvuyo Mandela accept the award, given to those whose public leadership inspires others, and to speak about his great-grandfather Please see MANDELA, page 2A

By Nikki Wentling

Groups of kids, some with faces painted powder-white with dark eyes and lips, explored the Spencer Museum of Art on Sunday afternoon, making graveyard dioramas and viewing the spooky exhibits with parents in tow. As 3-year-old Ellie Rice
sat stock-still while getting her face painted, one of the favorite activities at Sunday’s event, her father Glenn, of Kansas City, Mo., showed off her diorama. “She had fun making the diorama, Rice said. “But face painting will be one of her highlights; she likes that. Glenn, Ellie and dozens

crafted and explored some of the spooky exhibits, including a sculpture of a soldier that stood guard over a tomb in Japan and a painting of the preserved head of a mummy. The exhibit “Comanche is Dead drew several families to the back of the museum. Here, historic photographs of Comanche’s taxidermy
were placed side-by-side with a re-creation of the process by International Artist-In-Residence Diego Teo. Teo sculpted Comanche, a U.S. Calvary horse that survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and buried the sculpture in the front lawn of the museum. Please see MUSEUMS, page 2A
