The Lawrence school district and the local teachers union have agreed to continue meeting through June in hopes of hammering out a new contract as they prepare for major changes in the 2013-14 school year. But they still are wait-

ing for the Kansas Legislature to finalize a state budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 so they can get down to discussing salaries. “Once they finish up, I think we’ll have a pretty good picture as to what our financial picture will be next year, and then we Please see CONTRACT, page 2A

OLATHE —Saturday evening, the family of missing 18-month-old Lana-Leigh Bailey was given the bad news they had expected but prayed wouldn’t arrive. Police had discovered what they believed were the remains of the missing toddler, found in rural Osage County. Nonetheless, Sunday morning, LanaLeigh’s family welcomed the media into their Olathe home, discussing the case at length and sharing their pain with the world. “I think we’re just holding up pretty well, Wilma Pettijohn, the great-grandmother of Lana-Leigh, said. “We have a close family and that really helps. Their family has endured a trying week of bad news, starting with confirmation that Lana-Leigh’s mother, Kaylie Bailey, 21, was one of three suspected homicide victims,

Double the prestige: 2 Lawrence residents now go by ‘Mrs. Kansas’ By Giles Bruce gbruce@ljworld.com

To have one Mrs. Kansas come from Lawrence is rare. But two — in the same year? That’s just freaky. In late March, 27-year-old event planner Rachel Karwas was crowned Mrs. Kansas, just weeks after Elizabeth Stephens, a 32-year-old homeless-shelter employee,

earned the same title. Confused yet? Some of you probably didn’t even know there is such thing as Mrs. United States (Karwas’ pageant) or Mrs. America (Stephens’). The competitions are for older, married woman, distinguishing them from the youth-and-beauty-oriented Miss America or Universe. Please see MRS., page 2A
