KANSAS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WALK THROUGH CAMPUS between classes Wednesday on Jayhawk Boulevard. U.S. News & World Report’s university rankings, released Wednesday, showed that KU had dropped to a ranking of 106th from the previous year, when it was ranked 101st.

University: Results are not whole story By Scott Rothschild

KU ranked 106th among national universities, which is down from 101st last year, and 51st among public universities, down from 46th, according to the “Best Colleges 2013” list. KU remained ahead of Kansas State, which was 139th and 70th, but universities such as Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa State, Colorado,

— KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Jeff Vitter Iowa, Texas, and Texas A&M ranked higher than KU. Leaders at KU sought to downplay the results, saying there was little change in overall scoring and that the rankings are based on indica-

tors that may be several years behind. Also, they said, KU’s Bold Aspirations plan, which is aimed at improving a key component of the rankings — graduation rates — will lead

to a higher ranking soon. “The priorities of Bold Aspirations — such as helping students be successful in their first year so they stay on track to graduate — are important factors in U.S. News’ rankings,” said KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter. “So as we make changes in those areas, not only will we be improving the success of our students today, we’ll be setting KU up for higher rankings down the road,” Vitter said.

Bigger may end up being better. Lawrence city leaders, it appears, are interested in finding out. One day after Kansas University announced that it was abandoning one set of plans and proposing a new location for a more ambitious sports complex in northwest Lawrence, reaction from city leaders ranged from full-blown enthusiasm to cautious optimism. “I’m ecstatic,” said City ComKANSAS m i s s i o n e r UNIVERSITY Hugh Carter. “This can be so much more than just parking lots and buildings. This has the opportunity to be a real mixture between the university and the community.” KU leaders on Tuesday delivered a letter notifying city officials that the university was no longer interested in a proposed partnership to locate a sports complex on 50 acres of property at the northwest corner of Sixth Street and the South
