TOPEKA — Democratic legislative leaders Wednesday called on Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, to stop interfering with the redistricting fight that is now before a federal judicial panel. “He might not like it, but Gov. Brownback can only control one branch of government,” said House Minority Leader Paul Davis, D-Lawrence. “He needs to get back to his job and let the court fix the mess he created.” Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka, had similar thoughts, saying that Brownback, a conservative, is using redistricting to try to oust moderate members of the GOP. “His involvement has poisoned the process, making a difficult task impossible to complete,” Hensley said. Legislators and Brownback failed during the legislative session to approve new maps for congressional, legislative and State Board of Education districts.

Lawrence student advances in national bee Middle-schooler will spell in semifinal round today By Christine Metz cmetz@ljworld.com

R-E-L-I-E-F That wasn’t a word Emma Steimle spelled in the preliminary round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. But it is the one she used to describe standing on stage before camera crews and 277 fellow competitors and being given a word she knew how to spell correctly. “It was a relief to know I knew how to spell all of them,” Emma said. This week, Emma, an eighth-grader at West Middle School and daughter of Peter and Annette Steimle,

traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the famous spelling bee. On Tuesday, she completed a “really hard” 50-word computerized spelling test. The next day during the preliminary round, she took to the stage and spelled the words “forage” and “Pickelhaube” correctly. Her scores from both days placed her among the top 50 students in the national spelling bee. Today she advances to the semifinal round. For those wanting to watch from Kansas, the first round of today’s competition will air on ESPN2 from 9 a.m. to noon, and the

Shoofly. It may become the word of the summer in Lawrence in 2012. Beginning today, traffic on a portion of 23rd Street will be shifted to two shoofly detours that are expected to be in place until at least late November. The detours are part of a project to replace the 23rd Street bridge near Haskell Indian Nations University. “We generally have a target of opening it back up by Thanksgiving or a little sooner,” said Kim Qualls, a spokeswoman with the Kansas Department of Transportation, which is overseeing the project. Until then, motorists will be routed around the bridge. For those unfamiliar with a shoofly Road should detour, it is basically a short frontage road that be back to takes traffic around a con- normal by struction site. In this case, Thanksgiving, there will be two shoofly detours: one on each side KDOT says. of the 23rd Street bridge. The two shoofly detours each will accommodate two lanes of traffic, which is an improvement over the current situation. For several weeks, the eastbound portion of 23rd Street has been reduced to one lane. Qualls said the speed limit on the shoofly detours likely will be set at 30 mph. Traffic is scheduled to be shifted over to the detours shortly after the morning rush hour, Qualls said. As for work on the bridge, motorists should expect to see some major changes by mid-June. Qualls said that by the middle of the month, demolition work is expected to begin. The $4.3 million project will replace the 1931 bridge with a significantly wider bridge that will include a sidewalk separated from the main traffic area. The bridge also will have a unique design that uses stamped concrete to give the bridge the appearance of stone work. The project also will lower the profile of the hill the bridge sits on to give motorists better sight lines between Haskell and Learnard.

championship round will air on ESPN from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. “It has all been cool,” Emma said of her time in Washington, D.C.
