The weather needs to check its calendar. A rare May winter storm pelted Lawrence with rain, sleet and then snow on Thursday, dropping .56 inches of precipitation on the city. Roads remained clear Thursday evening and the weather wasn’t expected to cause any travel problems today. National Weather Service meteorologist Jarod Leighton said the roads and ground would likely remain clear of any accumulation because of warm ground temperatures. Light snow is again expected to fall this morning, but Leighton said he did not expect it to stick. The snowfall would tie the reNick Krug/Journal-World Photo cord for latest snow of the season in the area. TOPEKA — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told Gov. Sam Brownback that a new Kansas law that criminalizes federal enforcement of gun laws was unconstitutional. Holder also warned that the federal government “will take all appropriate action including litigation if necessary, to prevent the State of Kansas from interfering with the activities of federal officials enforcing federal law. The dispute is over Senate Bill 102, which Brownback Holder signed into law last month. The Second Amendment Protection Act excludes from federal regulation any gun made or owned in Kansas. It will allow law enforcement in Kansas to charge and convict federal authorities with crimes if they try to enforce action against a Kobach Kansas-protected gun. Holder said in a letter to Brownback, “In purporting to override federal law and to criminalize the official acts of federal officers S.B. 102 directly conflicts with federal law and is therefore unconstitutional. Holder said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Please see GUN, page 2A

Home sales up significantly Local residences on parade By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com

The Lawrence home sale market is heating up: According to the new report from the Lawrence Board of Realtors, there were 76 homes sales in March, up nearly 29 percent from the 59 sales made in March 2012. It was the 12th straight month that the Lawrence real estate market has posted year-over-year sales gains. Those numbers helped make for a strong first quarter. During the first three months of the year, 159 homes

sales were recorded in the city, a 24 percent increase from the same time period a year ago. It was about this time last year that the real estate market started making an upward climb, but back then the market was being fueled, in part, by sellers lowering their pricing expectations. Now, the numbers indicate homes prices are on the rise as well. The median sale price on Lawrence homes in the first quarter was $165,000, up
