A stable level of state funding will allow Kansas University to continue its efforts to improve itself, Gov. Sam Brownback said Tuesday during a visit to KU to defend his proposed budget for higher education. Local governments and health care providers in Douglas County unveiled a plan Tuesday for improving the health of the community through strategies that range from improving sidewalks and bike paths to expanding access to primary care physicians and implementing federal health reform. The Douglas County Community Health Plan is the result of 16 months of work, but organizers said the biggest challenge still lies ahead in turning the plan into action. “The plan isn’t complete,” said Dan Partridge, executive director of the LawrenceDouglas County Health Department, at the end of a wrap-up meeting Tuesday morning where the document was released. “We hope that there are going to be pages at the end that articulate and describe how each of your organizations are going to move this plan forward.” The plan focuses on five components of community health: access to health foods, access to health services, mental health, physical activity and poverty. Within each component, the plan outlines specific goals, along with strategies to achieve those goals. In nutrition, for example, the plan sets goals of increasing by 5 percent the number

taste of Kansas City’s high-end art scene has arrived in East Lawrence, where some of the priciest paintings in town hang inside a once-leaking, crumbling, vacant 1890s warehouse. The Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St., is celebrating its completion this week with a grand opening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The gallery, which doubles as an event space, is a sister gallery of Weinberger Fine Art in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Mo. A $2 million renovation of a former cider vinegar factory created the new venue, a keystone of what’s been dubbed Lawrence’s Warehouse Arts District. An adjacent outdoor event space called the Gateway is under construction, and businesses are expected to move into the Entre-
