They may not have returned as champions, but at least they got a hero’s welcome. More than 5,000 Jayhawk fans turned up Tuesday night to Allen Fieldhouse for the return of the men’s basketball team from New Orleans, which by all accounts had a stellar season despite its 6759 loss to powerhouse Kentucky in the national championship game on Monday. Many people talked about celebrating the better-than-expected season, including coach Bill Self. “How many people could have predicted the accomplishments of this team?” he asked to a standing, cheering crowd. Douglas County is the seventhhealthiest county in Kansas, according to a report released Tuesday. The healthiest: 1. Riley 2. Johnson 3. Doniphan 4. Ellis 5. Coffey 6. Pottawatomie HEALTH The five least healthy are Woodson, Montgomery, Chautauqua, Wyandotte and Cherokee. The third annual County Health Rankings report ranks nearly every county in all 50 states using a standard way to measure how healthy people are and how long they live. Fourteen people were arrested — most of them on misdemeanor charges — near downtown Lawrence after Kansas University’s loss Monday night in the NCAA championship game, according to Douglas County Jail records. And a Kansas University Medical Center police officer was treated for a head injury after a suspect in a fight hit him and knocked him to the ground on Massachusetts Street, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence police spokesman. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was bitten on the arm in a separate incident. Despite those problems, he said police were pleased with how most fans acted Monday night. “Obviously we had a group that was very disappointed. The vast majority of our citizens and fans behaved themselves and mourned the loss with us for a few minutes
