Citywide recycling coming in 2014
Survive and advance: Jayhawks top Hilltoppers
By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com
Lawrence residents, you have about 18 months to come up with an extra $2.81 per month. Lawrence city commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting are set to formally approve a new citywide curbside recycling program that would begin in late 2014 and add about $3 per month to every residential trash bill in the city. “We think it is going to be a great program,” said Chuck CITY Soules, the director of the city’s public works depart- COMMISSION ment, which will be responsible for running the program. After more than a year of discussion, commissioners are set to approve an ordinance that provides a host of new details about the proposed service.

After ugly game, KU faces UNC By Tom Keegan tkeegan@ljworld.com
Kansas University’s last two basketball coaches will face each other in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in six seasons Sunday in Sprint Center. Tipoff for the North Carolina-Kansas game is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. on CBS. Kansas fans cheered North Carolina coach Roy Williams before the Tar Heels’ 78-71 victory Friday against Villanova, but they aren’t likely to hear the same reception Sunday. Williams earned his 700th career
victory Friday. Bill Self, whose Jayhawks survived one of their sloppier performances, a 64-57 victory against Western Kentucky, goes for his 300th victory at Kansas in a rematch of last season’s Elite Eight game won by Kansas. Self defeated Williams in a Final Four semifinal in 2008 on the way to KU’s first national title since 1988. KU had 17 turnovers Friday and was bailed out by senior center Jeff Withey, who contributed 17 points, six rebounds and seven blocked shots, enabling Kansas (30-5) to overcome a 31-30 half-time deficit against Western Kentucky (20-16).
“Obviously we’re pleased we won,” Self said. “We didn’t play our best by any stretch. We’re happy to advance. Certainly, we know we’ll have to play a lot better on Sunday.” North Carolina has won nine of 11 games since switching to a fourguard lineup, and its only two losses came against Miami and Duke, the two best teams in the ACC, both No. 2 seeds in the NCAA tournament.

Church plans parade in new neighborhood By Meagan Thomas mthomas@ljworld.com
The Palm Sunday celebration at Family Church of Lawrence won’t be a typical service held inside the church building, 1601 New Hampshire St. Instead, parishioners will march through their neighborhood in a Palm Sunday parade, complete with palm branches, a man dressed as Jesus and a live donkey. “This really is an educational experience for the kids of the church, and we wanted to bring the rest of
the church people together as kind of a fellowship and worship and praise,” church member Tom Sacks said. Tom and his wife, Debbie Sack, presented the idea to their pastor, the Rev. Ron Channell, about a month and a half ago. The Sacks had previously attended a church in Leavenworth where the parade re-enactment had been an annual event, and the couple thought Family Church of Lawrence would benefit from hosting something similar. TOPEKA — Republican House leaders on Friday said higher education could handle a 4 percent cut and dismissed any opinion to the contrary. “The sky is falling is so much rhetoric,” said House Speaker Ray Merrick, R-Stilwell. He said the argument from post-secondary officials that such a cut would hurt “has no merit.” Both the House and Senate have approved separate budget bills and will start the process
