Nursing home staff at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence held a moment of silence Wednesday morning for their former colleague Deborah Bretthauer. Late Monday night, police found Bretthauer, 67, dead — with “obvious traumatic injuries” — in her apartment at 1200 George Court. Her 16-year-old grandson, who lived with her, was arrested shortly thereafter, and he was charged late Tuesday with first-degree murder. His name has not been officially released. Donna Bell, Brandon Woods executive director, said the home’s staff and residents were all shocked to hear of Bretthauer’s death. Bretthauer worked off and on for Brandon Woods for a total of about 10 years beginning in the early 1990s, Bell said. She stopped working at the facility about a year and a half ago. Throughout her tenure, Bell said, Bretthauer established an impressive reputation throughout Brandon Woods. “She was a very caring nurse. I think in particular nurses have to have a giving heart. They have to give of themselves,” she said. “She defined ‘caring nurse.’” Please see VICTIM, page 2A
