Regents to review schools’ policies

Topeka — Democrat Chad Taylor will remain on the Nov. 4 ballot as a candidate for U.S. Senate, according to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Taylor, however, said he plans to challenge Kobach’s decision. Those were among the twists in what had already become a tumultuous, and surprisingly close, four-way race between Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, Taylor, independent candidate Greg Orman, and Libertarian Randall Batson. Kobach said Thursday that Taylor, who won the Democratic nomination in the Aug. 5 primary and abruptly pulled out of the race Wednesday, failed to meet the requirements of a 1997 statute that says he must formally declare that, if elected, he would be unable to fulfill the duties of the office. “We have received no declaration from Mr. Taylor that he is incapable of serving,” Kobach said.

Chad Taylor withdrew Wednesday as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Pat Roberts.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Taylor’s name must stay on the ballot. Taylor is challenging that decision.

Republican Sen. Pat Roberts’ campaign says Taylor’s withdrawal was part of a “corrupt bargain” between national Democrats and Independent candidate Greg Orman.

Earlier on the same day Taylor withdrew, Independent candidate Greg Orman picked up key GOP endorsements. A poll has indicated he would benefit from Taylor’s withdrawal.

Kansas University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little on Thursday sought to calm criticism that the school failed to enact strong enough punishment against a student accused of rape. “The university’s administration, faculty, and staff have a responsibility to create an environment where everyone feels safe,” Gray-Little said in an email to students, faculty and staff. “If you feel unsafe, then I and the rest of the university leadership have a responsibility to do what we can to make changes so you Gray-Little do feel safe,” she wrote. Gray-Little’s message followed outrage from some students and alumni after it was reported a 20-year-old student said she was raped in 2013 and her alleged attacker was put on disciplinary probation and banned from student housing, but Wilk not required to perform any community service. In addition, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office initially declined to prosecute, but on Wednesday said it was reviewing the case. The alleged assailant has said the two students engaged in consensual sex. Gray-Little said she could not speak about the specific case that has prompted criticisms. Gray-Little outlined the procedure that

Several hundred new jobs may be coming to town

ne of Lawrence’s larger economic development victories may be going on right underneath our noses at the moment. I’m guessing you have seen or heard the ads for new positions at the General Dynamics call center in the East Hills Business Park. Well, it is becoming clearer all the time that the company

isn’t just trying to hire a few college students at the beginning of the school year. I’ve had some people tell me the company may be adding about 400 customer service jobs to its Lawrence operations. The company has announced that it is hosting three job fairs between today and Saturday to help get the positions filled.

A spokesman with a marketing company hired by General Dynamics said the company didn’t yet want to announce the number of new jobs it is adding in Lawrence, but he said it was significant. “This is not 10 jobs we’re talking about,” said Brad Wills with Wills & Associates Public Relations. “It is a big hire.”

I’ve heard from one person familiar with the details of the project that about 400 jobs are expected to be added to the call center. I believe that number, however, is probably subject to change. But I’m comfortable saying we’re talking about a few hundred jobs being added
