HEATHER BRANDENBURG, A KANSAS UNIVERSITY STUDENT FROM WISCONSIN, works out recently at Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center, 1740 Watkins Center Drive. Brandenburg suffers from a bilateral hip dysplasia and rheumatoid arthritis. She was told by doctors she would never run again but has made a bold recovery and will be running in November’s Kansas Half Marathon, which is a fundraiser for Health Care Access.

Just a few months ago, Heather Brandenburg was told she’d likely never be able to run again. But the 21-year-old Kansas University student didn’t let that stop her. She pushed through the pain

and is now training to participate in the Kansas Half Marathon, which takes place in Lawrence this November. “I finally took control of my own life,” the Minocqua, Wis., native said during a recent interview at Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center, where she

Kansas University officials are hoping to tap into a rich vein of federal research funding: the U.S. Department of Defense. “There’s a desire on our part, as is true with other universities, to find out more about what the Department of Defense is hoping to fund, and then trying to match up what they are hoping to fund with the research strengths of KU,” said Kevin Boatright, a spokesman for the KU Office of Research. KU has received national security clearances allowing it to pursue classified contracts with all federal agencies in the U.S. government. The so-called Facility Security Clearance opens the door to additional funding sources, such as DeKANSAS UNIVERSITY partment of Defense agencies, which will spend nearly $63 billion this year for research and development. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, KU received nearly $6.5 million in research funding from Defense Department agencies. That represents about 2.5 percent of KU’s total research haul. But Boatright said that total from defense could increase substantially in future years given the breadth of what DOD researches. Already, KU researchers are working on more than 60 projects for Defense agencies that cover a wide range of interests, including advanced computing, biomedicine, ecological assessments, aerospace, archaeology, psychology, meteorology, biomaterials, linguistics and radar. To get the word out about the wide variety of research opportunities available through the DOD, the KU Office of Research is holding a workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
