Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners got an earful both for and against a proposed shopping center that would add more than 500,000 square feet of commercial space southeast of the South Lawrence Trafficway and Iowa Street. Commissioners heard more than an hour’s worth
of public comment and were still debating the project at the Journal-World’s deadline. On one side were residents who expressed concern that the project would harm downtown. State receives 14,205 applications for concealed-carry permits, down from 25,316 Staff and Wire Reports
The state received the second highest number of concealed carry applications in the last fiscal year, but the number was much lower than the record from the previous year. Kansas Attorney General Derek
Schmidt reported that 14,205 applications for permits for concealed carry of a gun were received between July 1, 2013, and June 30 of this year. But during the fiscal year before last, a record 25,316 applications were received. Schmidt said more than 83,000 Kansans have active concealed carry permits.
