TOURING ROCK CHALK PARK

‘It is going to be a great day when this place opens’

Effects of tax cuts understated, report finds By John Hanna Associated Press

Topeka — Kansas appears to have understated the effects of tax cuts championed by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback in projecting revenues, the Legislature’s nonpartisan research staff said Tuesday in a report that reignited a sharp debate over how the governor’s aides have explained recent revenue shortfalls. In addition to the basketball goals, the pavilion will also have 16 fold-down volleyball systems, 10 divider curtains and 16 scoreboards.

Construction at city’s rec center on track, but name is still elusive By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com

A

t the construction site of Lawrence’s new 181,000-square-foot recreation center, everything is on schedule, except the name. Members of the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory board were told at a tour of the site Tuesday that the mammoth center is still on schedule to open by Sept. 2. What it will be named, however, isn’t yet clear. City commissioners in early May narrowed the field to three names:

Lawrence Fieldhouse, Lawrence Freedom Fieldhouse or Lawrence Sports Pavilion. All three names also would include the moniker “at Rock Chalk Park,” referring to the larger sports complex for Kansas University that is adjacent to the center. Commissioners indicated they likely would come to a naming decision after receiving sample logos from designers in about two weeks, but thus far the item hasn’t come back for commission discussion. Big rainfall puts city ahead for June

W

hile it wasn’t a historic rainstorm for Lawrence, Monday and Tuesday’s rainfall was substantial nonetheless. From about 2 p.m. Monday through around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Lawrence got 2.68 inches of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service. The record for that two-day period was 4.77 inches in 1995. Monday’s rainfall amount of 2.1 was also below the June 9 record of 4.71 inches in 1995. However, this week’s rainfall puts Lawrence well above average for the month of June. Lawrence has gotten 5.94 inches of precipitation this month, compared with an average for this time of June of 2 inches. Even so, Lawrence is about 2 inches of rainfall short of a normal year. Other area locales also received a good amount of rain from 2 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Topeka received 1.38 inches; Kansas City, Kan., received 1.12 inches; and Baldwin City collected 1.72. The wet month could continue, with more rain predicted for late today into early Thursday, Saturday evening into Sunday morning, and Sunday evening, according to NWS meteorologist Jenifer Bowen.
