First came a failed sales tax vote in November. Then came an April election that brought three new members to the Lawrence City Commission. Now, city leaders are rethinking the notion that a new, multimillion-dollar police headquarters must be located in a brand new building. A majority of city commissioners now say they want to consider retrofitting an existing building to meet the needs of the seriously cramped police department.

anice Miller began attending Wakarusa Valley Elementary School in the early ’60s. By then, Shirley Harrell already had quite a respectable reputation as a bus driver for the district. Although Miller never rode on Harrell’s bus, the longtime family friend said it was clear she cared about her job and her passengers. At the end of this school year, 53 years into the business, 85-year-old Harrell hung up her keys and decided to retire.
