FEAST

Motion for new trial denied; sentencing to follow report By Caitlin Doornbos Twitter: @CaitlinDoornbos

Sarah Gonzales McLinn, convicted in March of first-degree murder in the death of CiCi’s Pizza owner Harold “Hal” Sasko, will undergo a mental health evaluation at Larned State Hospital before sentencing, Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin ruled Wednesday. The results of that evaluation could determine whether McLinn receives mental health treatment or goes to prison, perhaps for 50 years with no chance for parole. McLinn McLinn was originally set to be sentenced Wednesday, but her defense attorney, Carl Cornwell, filed a motion for a new trial. Martin rejected that request. Please see MCLINN, page 2A

New guidelines not likely to affect fluoride content in city water By Chad Lawhorn Twitter: @clawhorn_ljw

New federal guidelines about the amount of fluoride in drinking water supplies are not expected to change how much of the cavityfighting agent is added to Lawrence’s drinking water. A spokeswoman for the

city’s utilities department said Lawrence’s drinking water already has less fluoride than the new guidelines announced by the Department of Health and Human Services on Monday. “It looked like this was the direction it was heading for awhile, so we made the adjustment a few years ago,”

said Jeanette Klamm, a management analyst with the utilities department. The new guidelines announced by federal health officials recommend no more than 0.7 milligrams of fluoride be added per liter of drinking water. The previous guidelines recommended a range of 0.7 milligrams

to 1.2 milligrams, with the higher amount being recommended particularly for colder weather regions of the United States. Federal health officials made the new recommendation — the first change in federal fluoride standards in Please see WATER, page 2A

Topeka — Republican leaders in the Kansas Legislature are quietly trying to put together a package of tax measures to balance the state budget, but they say it will probably take until late next week before a plan is introduced. “I think by the end of the week we may start to have a feel for what the solution possibilities could be,” House Taxation Committee Chairman Rep. Marvin Kleeb, R-Olathe, said Wednesday. Please see TAX, page 2A

Think of the downtown shot put event recently or the original rules of basketball that will be displayed in the new center adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse.
