atherine Bolton considers herself a woman of many hats. Technically she’s an elementary school mental health professional, but to the lives she’s touched, she’s
much more. To Jessica Beeson, coordinator of Cordley Elementary’s Helping Hawks program, Bolton and the people she’s surrounded by are “stewards of humanity,” working to leave the world a better place than when they entered it.
“She never looks at a kid and sees today’s version of that kid,” Beeson said. “She’s really able to see the history of the child, the family structure, the entire situation and the resources available.” Please see BOLTON, page 2A

Topeka — A bill that would drastically overhaul the way Kansas funds its public schools could be sent to Gov. Sam Brownback as early as today, depending on how the Kansas Senate decides to handle the matter. But a number of procedural hurdles could stand in the way, including the possibility the House may reconsider its passage of the bill. There is also a possibility that a three-judge disLEGISLATURE trict court panel in Topeka presiding over an ongoing school finance lawsuit could step in to block any changes to the current formula from taking effect, setting up a potential constitutional showdown between the legislative and judicial branches of state government. The House narrowly passed the bill Friday, 64-57, and Democrats said they would offer a motion to reconsider that vote today, Please see SCHOOLS, page 2A

keting campaign. Brenna Buchanan Young, director of marketing and development for Douglas County Senior Services, said the effort aims to be like a “concierge service” for retirees. Getting people engaged, letting them know about Lawrence’s amenities and connecting them to the community are all goals, she said. “What does the good life
