LAWRENCE ACTOR RIC AVERILL, right, takes on the role of Atticus Finch in a “living history” portrayal for a group of Lawrence High School freshmen who are studying “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the classic 1960 novel by Harper Lee. Averill gave the performance Thursday in the old courtroom of the Douglas County Courthouse, which is similar in its architecture to the courtroom used in the 1962 movie version of the book starring Gregory Peck as Finch. Averill re-enacted the famous closing argument scene in which Finch says the only reason his client is on trial is because of his skin color. Afterward, Averill stayed in character as students asked him questions about the story.

The future of a Houseapproved bill that says people can cite religious beliefs to deny goods and services to same-sex couples was in doubt Thursday after Senate President Susan Wagle expressed concerns about the measure. As a national uproar ensued Wagle over HB 2453, Wagle, a conservative Republican from Wichita, issued a statement that said she was “concerned about the practical impact of the bill.” Wagle added, “A strong majority of my members support laws that define traditional marriage, protect religious institutions and protect individuals from being forced to violate
