Judiciary in Kansas shows very little racial diversity

KU IN THE MIRROR

By Peter Hancock Twitter: @LJWpqhancock

Topeka — When Kansas Chief Justice Lawton Nuss gave his annual State of the Judiciary address in January, one topic was never discussed, but it was plainly visible. During the pomp and ceremony of the occasion, just before Nuss took the podium, the bailiff asked everyone to rise as the other six justices filed in, followed by the 13 judges of the Kansas Court of COURTS Appeals. Of the 20 appellate court jurists in Kansas, only one face was nonwhite. Appeals Court Judge Henry W. Green, an African-American, is the only nonwhite judge above the district court level in Kansas.

County studying issues as prelude to jail expansion, mental health care project

Prep work for reaccreditation yields ‘honest’ 10-year look at university By Sara Shepherd Twitter: @saramarieshep

Have some time to kill and want to know — honestly — what’s been going on at Kansas University for the past decade? Check out the 209-page Self Study that upwards of 100 KU community members spent more than a year preparing in time for Monday’s visit by representatives of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of

Colleges and Schools. (Or if you don’t have THAT much time, see the Executive Summary, a mere 45 pages.) The commission is the agency in charge of accrediting KU. The hefty Self Study is one of its requirements for reacKANSAS UNIVERSITY creditation, which comes around once every 10 years. “If anybody on campus reads

this, they’re going to learn a whole lot about this university that they don’t know,” said Susan Twombly, accreditation steering committee chairwoman, professor of higher education administration and chairwoman of KU’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. “It puts together in one place lots of information about where this university is at this point in time.”

The leaders behind a proposal to expand the Douglas County Jail and construct a mental health crisis intervention center know there’s a need for such an undertaking and that it must be acted on soon. But for now, they just want to understand it. Since October, and for at least another three months, project officials are touring other treatment facilities, reaching out to potential partner agencies, analyzing data and studying how to best establish a system
