portant it is to our county, our state, to the world in fact, because people eat,” said Bill Wood, director of the Douglas County Extension Service. “You don’t just go in a grocery store and the food just appears, like it was made in a factory,” he said. “Somebody somewhere had to either grow it or raise it or start the process.” The lessons took place in the Livestock Arena of the Douglas County Fair-
The defense attorney for the 19-year-old woman accused of killing a 52-year-old Lawrence man said that she waived extradition in a Florida court Thursday and would be returned to Kansas “today or tomorrow.” Sarah B. Gonzales McLinn, charged with firstdegree murder in the death of Harold M. Sasko, was handed over to Florida state authorities after spending much of the week in federal custody. Her privately hired attorney, Carl Cornwell, said Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson informed him that McLinn waived extradition Thursday. In McLinn’s court appearance Thursday, according to CBS Miami, when asked if she wanted to waive extradition, McLinn asked the judge, “Does that mean I’ll go back to Kansas?” When the judge replied yes, McLinn said: “Then, yeah, I’ll waive extradition.” Cornwell expected McLinn to be brought back to Kansas either Thursday or today and said that he had yet to speak with her.

From the grains that make the flour for the crust, and the cows and pigs that eventually
become beef and pork toppings, to the dairy cows that provide the milk that gets turned into cheese and ice cream, the 14th annual “Slice of Ag” day gave
students a close-up lesson in how everything they eat starts from a farm. “Our goal is to let the students learn about agriculture and how im-

Study: Physical fitness, academic performance closely linked By Peter Hancock phancock@ljworld.com
Researchers from two state agencies say they cannot prove definitively that exercise and physical fitness make kids smarter. But results of a new study
suggest a strong correlation between children’s physical fitness and their performance on reading and math tests. The study, unveiled Thursday during a gym class at Seaman Middle School in Topeka, was
“The study is going to say it’s a relationship, which talks about it being a correlation,” said Mark Thompson, project director for the Kansas State Department of Education’s Healthy Kansas Schools project, who helped lead
