Perceived Classroom Motivational Approaches of Teachers and Learning Styles of Generation Y College Students Grace V. Santos Liceo de Cagayan University Philippines 4:31 – 4:50 August 19 – Ballroom C

This study explores the learning styles and some unique characteristics of a particular group of Generation Y College students in a university. It applied the Felder’s Learning Style Model and the Generation Model of Howe and Strauss to determine how they regard their teachers’ classroom motivational approaches. It used the descriptive survey method with survey questionnaires complemented with key informant interviews. Data were gathered and organized to address the main concerns of the study, which included the college students’ learning styles, salient and unique characteristics as Generation Y and their perception of their teachers’ motivational approaches in the classroom. Results of the study confirmed the theory of Felder on Learning Styles on the existence of the four types of continuum in the manner that the students learn; major stipulations of the Generational Model of Strauss and Howe were also confirmed in this study. The study concluded that the motivational approaches of effective teachers and used often in the classroom were viewed differently by the students, reinforcing the Generational Model further that this present Y generation has different perspectives, attitudes and behavior compared to the generation of their teachers and/or the past generation.

The Relationship Between Leadership and Employee Morale in Higher Education Jedidiah Kenoma Goodness dtindustry@yahoo.fr Jabah Investment Nigeria 4:51 – 5:10 August 19 – Ballroom C JABAH INVESMENT COMPANY LTD (JIC), like many other institutions of higher education, is facing new challenges, including budget cuts, a new funding formula, changes in technology, mergers, new leadership, and a call for increased research productivity and graduation rate. All these challenges have contributed to dampened staff morale and have led to some resistance and apprehension. The aim of the study reported in this article was to explore the morale, commitment, satisfaction and perceptions of staff of UNISA’s College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) and to explore the relationship between leadership and morale. A self-administrated web-based survey approach was used in a census to collect information among all 604 CEMS staff members. A 42.1% response rate was obtained. The results revealed an overall satisfaction index of 62 and that of CEMS leadership of 61. The study revealed that there is a relationship between leadership and morale, and those leadership competencies such as communication, fostering trust and team building set a clear direction for the college impact on morale. It is recommended that morale surveys should be conducted to obtain the requisite information before developing strategies that relate to employee morale, retention and performance.
