Art is for everyone. Arts education should never be out of reach. EARLY ENROLLMENT DISCOUNT is available for classes listed with red codes. Must enroll by May 19, 2019. Discount is automatically applied! FINANCIAL AID is available on a sliding scale based on household income throughout the year for youth and adults interested in classes. Applications are available at the front desk and online. Last year we provided over $120,000 in financial aid! DANCE BUNDLE DISCOUNTS: Individuals and families who enroll in multiple weekly dance classes can receive a 15%-30% discount off tuition. This cannot be combined with any other discount and is only redeemable through the Front Desk. Receive a discount of 15% off (2 classes), 20% off (3 classes), 30% off (4+ classes). BOYS DANCE SCHOLARSHIPS are for young men who demonstrate a strong interest in the field of dance. Applicants must be in 2nd-12th grade to be eligible. Contact Hanan Misko to apply. Learn how to capture the beauty and power of the prairie through exploring history, storytelling, engineering, and making naturalist artwork. We will incorporate native plants and animals, seed pods, wind power, garden design, insects, and all the beauty of the great outdoors found in our neck of the prairie. Have fun making tiny terrariums, seed sculptures, Andy Goldsworthy installations, and yard art sculptures. The perfect way to kick off the summer is to bring your art into the backyard!

Welcome to the Big Top! This week we make circus-based visual and performance art in this fun class that ends in a circus installation. STEAM concepts focus on kinesthesiology, forces of motion, and animal biology. Make artwork that focuses on big, bold colors and sideshow-worthy talents, and then wrap them all up into your own, special circus. Barnum and Bailey beware, this art circus will give you a run for your money!

Big cats and little cats, wild cats and domestic cats, cats in pop culture and lesser known cats. No cat is off limit in this fancy feline romp. We’ll study taxonomy and animal biology to inform the creation of fur-nominal costumes, meow-numental art, and develop our cat-itude, and construct a final theatrical pur-formance. Look at the artwork of Laurel Birch and Jim Dine, build sculptural cats and draw fun cat portraits. Don’t be afraid to get your paws dirty!

Create your own interactive monster game loosely based on the structure of Dungeons and Dragons. A mysterious island. Unbelievable sounds and sights. A mystery that can only be solved by Monster Hunters. Work together to make artwork in the form of monster drawings, maps, and expedition gear and then collaborate to solve the mystery of Monster Island. Rooooaaaar!

The galaxy needs you now more than ever! Hone your Jedi skills as you immerse yourself into the rich mythology of the Force and all its players. From Sith Lords to Cantina jazz players, every character is important and our artwork will explore the many facets of Star Wars. STEAM concepts include the physics of light sabers, the astronomy of the galaxy, and the engineering of ship design. Combine Jedi training in performance and dance with character design in visual art. By the end of the week, our young Padawans will become Jedis (or turn to the dark side of the Sith)!

Design, prototype, and build your own toy! Mix performance, dance, and visual arts in order to explore STEAM concepts of physics, motion, and engineering. We will begin with initial games and drawing exercises to generate brilliant new toy ideas and then work through the week to build our prototypes. This week is as much a design/ build workshop as it is summer camp. Learn how inventors go through trial and error and interpret feedback to change design. No matter the outcome, the lobby will be filled with our designs and inventions in a concluding toy celebration!

Part color theory, part chemistry experiment, all fun. Join us for a trip down a rainbow road for an adventure in holographic art, mixing color with paint and light, playing with prisms, and spectral music! Study the scientifics of refraction, reflection, and elemental composition while building skills in artistic principles of design and composition. In one colorful week, we’ll digitally capture light, create rainbow smoke bombs, and make artwork in every tint and tone. We can’t wait to see hue!

The Second City gets box city treatment as we replicate the marvels of modern architecture. While planning, designing, and engineering a kid-sized cardboard box metropolis, students apply their imaginations to fill the city in. Using Chicago as an example, we will look at urban planning and design and how it shapes the world we live in. Students gain appreciation for shape, form, and proportion as they apply these principles to their expanding city. The real magic happens as students take ownership of their structures, identities, and culture within the city. The city is installed in the lobby for all to enjoy with a public opening on the last day of camp.

Join an epic, superpowered battle between good and evil! We’ll be studying comic book characters on and off the page as we practice 3pt. landings, explore theatrical battles, create comic book characters, and use digital art to produce custom comic book covers. In addition to crafting a good catch phrase, we’ll learn about physics, digital arts technology, narrative construction, and storyboarding. Feel free to wear costumes throughout the week, just like a mini Comic Con. Dust off your utility belt and warm up those superpowers; this art adventure is going to be a page turner!

Cool down with this camp that explores the natural world at both poles. Discover the mysteries of the Arctic and Antarctic regions as we explore the patterns, forms, and colors of the life within them. As a team member on our expedition, you’ll build a base camp, study historical explorers including Ernest Shackelton, survey native ecology, and build adventure endurance. Warm up with STEAM concepts including animal biology, ecosystems, and biodiversity, and fend off frost by the northern lights. How cool!

Lawrence Ballet Theatre (LBT) is the resident pre-professional ballet company of the Lawrence Arts Center. Led by Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain exposure and experience through numerous performances of classical ballet repertoire and original works. In 1975, a group of Lawrencians inspired by the belief that the arts are for everyone came together around an idea: to create a place where people from all over Lawrence could experience the best in arts programming. Working in partnership with the City, they launched the Lawrence Arts Center in the historic Carnegie Library Building. Starting with art classes and a gallery, the Lawrence Arts Center grew to become a creative hub for this exceptionally imaginative town. Following a generation of growth, by 2000 the Lawrence Arts Center had outgrown its beloved Carnegie Building. Rallying in support, the people of Lawrence raised $3.5 million to build a state of the art facility that could house the full spectrum of creativity the Arts Center was known for: its innovative preschool, dance classes, Seem-to-be-Players and Summer Youth Theatre productions, and art classes. The City agreed to match this private investment, and through this partnership, a $7 million thriving public facility and city asset was born.
