Smith,

LETTER FROM INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I first visited the Lawrence Arts Center in June of 2004 as the first full time Artist-inResidence in the ceramics program. Upon arriving and touring the newly opened building, I wondered, how is this possible? Lawrence isn’t that big of a town, so how does something like this exist?’

Over the past 20+ years, I’ve learned how. The evidence is all around. This town is loaded with folks who love creating, learning, and engaging. There are so many incredible organizations, establishments, and creators that are the essential elements that make people want to live here. I firmly believe that this organization is a cornerstone that helps make Lawrence special.

There is magic in creating and learning together no matter what age or experience level. The amount of relationships that have been formed by people in our classrooms, theaters, and galleries is our legacy. It’s been happening for decades. It’s happening now, and we are working hard to ensure it’ll be happening well into the future.

Having served in a wide variety of roles within this organization, I’ve seen the impact the Arts Center can have. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as Interim Executive Director and work with talented and dedicated staff, artists, teachers, and students. As we launch our newest round of classes, performances, exhibitions, and events, I hope you feel some of the same awe I did during my first visit. Sign up for a new class, get tickets to the show, and visit the galleries. You make this possible.

EXHIBITIONS

JANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 28 • Final Friday | January 30 and February 27, 6-9 pm

Heidi Herrman | Remnants and Reveries

January 16, 5-7 pm

Layered with encaustic, these works transform textiles, botanicals, and found fragments into meditations on the interplay between permanence and impermanence. Each surface holds remnants of lived experience—faded, frayed, and reimagined— where material traces are fused into spaces for reverie and reflection.

INSIGHT Art Talk: Saturday, January 17, 11 am

Christa Capua | Southern Futurism

Describing her visual language as “Southern Futurism,” Christa Capua explores place and gender caught between history and technology through a series of scrolls. Each scroll explores themes of meaning, memory, and the sacred in parallel. By loving the forgotten corners, the secret gardens, the ephemera, and the drawers in an old desk, the shoebox full of obsolete instructions and old letters, Capua explores the mythologies, narratives, and symbolism we use to make sense of being alive.

JANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 28 • Final Friday | January 30 and February 27, 6-9 pm

Kristin Morland | Eye Sea Seeds Sewn: Mirror or Mirage | Featured Auction Artist

Primarily working with light that takes form through hand-sewn sequins and beads, Kristin Morland presents an exhibition featuring abstract sequin works that play with the light waves of life. These works gaze into moments in the ever-changing light currents of space and time, inviting the viewer to ponder perceived reality.

As a former educator, I knew the Lawrence Arts Center Kindergarten was the place for us! The opportunity to ease into daily school, while only going for a halfday, with the perfect class size was a huge drawing point for me. Knowing that the teachers would treat him with the utmost care, and that he would get a quality education within the world of play was exactly what we both needed! I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about the Lawrence Arts Center and how amazing it has been for my now six-year-old. The only thing I would change would be to have a way for him to keep attending!
