My Yay! List

W

hen my oldest kid was a year old, I started referring to our family as “Team Murphy.” I’ve always been a sports-loving jock, so it started out being just for fun. As time went on and our family grew, it took on Team Murphy: greater meaning. A team dynamic, what Pat and me with a team represents, and the word itself Charley, Brooks, align even more than the word “family” and James. with what I want family life to be. I want our family to internalize that we’re bound by more than blood and marriage—the kids aren’t just kids, and Pat and I aren’t just their parents; rather, we chose to create this family and choose to nurture it every day. I want us all, even the kids, to recognize that we have a responsibility to one another and to our team as a whole.

To me, that’s true belonging: You as an individual are cared for, and we all look after this bigger thing that protects us and makes us strong. If I want to cultivate those feelings, I have to do so intentionally. Calling ourselves Team Murphy is a big part of it. Even more important is acting like a team.

On Team Murphy, we understand our individual jobs, needs, strengths, and weaknesses. We celebrate when one member shines extra bright and offer help and support when one struggles. When someone slacks off or makes trouble (me included!), everyone gets a lecture and runs laps.

(Kidding—usually just no Friday night movie!) We also give out MVP awards and have benchwarmers and walk-ons— grandmas, babysitters, cousins. Even if you don’t have kids, you can still field a team. Because at the end of the day, it’s about appreciating that you’re playing together, no one’s out there alone, and everyone does their part to make magic happen. A decade in, our team isn’t perfect, but none ever is. It still feels like we’re winning. I’ll be cheering your team on as we all head back to everything!

eing a health and nutrition correspondent means that companies frequently send me their products, and ask for my stamp of approval.

Most of the time I dive into research, give the product a try, and send the company honest feedback about what they’ll need to change before I’ll recommend it. n a Sunday this past March, Chan pulled on her apron at 3 a.m. in the kitchen of BouNom Bakery. Five days earlier, six Asian women had been shot in Atlanta. Chan was baking extra goodies, knowing that she and her sister Khamla, Laotian political asylum refugees from Texas, would donate the day’s profits from their FrenchSouthern bakery to fight a rising tide of hate crimes in the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Racism had always singed the edges of their lives. Teachers ignored them; strangers joked about their slanted eyes; shop owners accused them of stealing. “We have to make our voices heard for all people of color,” says Khamla.

Their mother used to tell a story about how, when she was fleeing Laos with her children, someone gave her a much-needed bag of rice.

“The best time to give is when you have very little, because somebody else has absolutely nothing,” she’d say. That March Sunday, Khamla and Chan raised $4,200 for anti-racism nonprofits; soon they plan to create a scholarship at the University of Connecticut supporting the study of Asian history. “We have a little bit,” says Chan, “but we want to give more to our community, to the people who need more than we do.”

rowing up, sisters Maria and Paula felt like opposites. Paula, now 53, slept through her alarm; Maria, 55, was an early riser. Paula was outgoing and athletic; Maria was the artsy, academic one.

The two of them eventually decided to join ROTC in college. When she was 11, Paula had watched a documentary about the first women at West Point and announced her plan to join the military over dinner; Maria just needed to pay for college.

Both loved the Army enough to make it a career.

“In retrospect,” says Paula, “maybe we had more in common than we gave ourselves credit for.”

Since 2019, the sisters have even shared a job title: general (Maria is a Major General and Paula is a Brigadier General). They’re two of only 23 female generals in the Army—and the only ones in history who have been sisters.

Naturally, they have different leadership styles: Paula, who proudly serves Army Medicine in Texas, is empathetic, while Maria, in charge of the Army’s Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) in Arizona, leans analytical. But they’ve gotten closer by turning to each other for support. “There’s not a big community of peers,” says Maria, “but it’s a little easier to call your sister.”

rom the start, the path to motherhood was fraught for Erika, now 35. Several miscarriages were followed by an ectopic pregnancy (when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus). She and her husband, Scott, started fostering Kai, who had a heart condition, at 10 months old, and Evie, born with drugs in her system, at 10 days old, only to find out that Erika was pregnant with twins.

When she lost the babies at 21 weeks’ gestation, she spiraled into grief. “I knew I couldn’t do it again,” Erika says. “I couldn’t go through pregnancy again, because I was just so exhausted and scared, and at that point our doctors really recommended against it. So I started looking up surrogacy.”

That was when one of her older sisters stepped in.

Krista, a 44-year-old teacher with two children, had watched Erika stumble through her pregnancy losses, “so everything in me just wanted to do something to help and provide them with some piece of joy,” she says. On vacation, Krista offered to carry Erika’s baby as a surrogate mom. At first Erika hesitated. What if the experience was as awful as her own pregnancies?

A midwife urged her to say yes. “Your sisters are the

closest thing to you,” Erika remembers her advising, “so why wouldn’t you have your children grow in them?”

A few months later, doctors implanted an embryo in Krista. Baby Arlo was born in August 2019.

When another sister, Andrea, 47, learned about the surrogacy, she thought, Oh, I would love to do that, but online research made her second-guess herself. Forget it—I’m too old, she thought. But to her surprise, the clinic gave the go-ahead, and she was thrilled to carry baby Ada, born in February 2020.

Between the births, the Ellises adopted their foster children, Kai and Evie; their household came to include four kids under 5 (as well as three cats, two dogs, two goats, and 13 chickens!).

The chaos is real, but doting aunts help. Arlo wants to call Krista every night; Ada crawls right into Andrea’s lap when she visits. When one of the kids takes their first steps or says their first word, Krista and Andrea rejoice too. “Both of them have become kind of like second mothers to these kids in different ways,” says Erika. “I feel so lucky and grateful, because they saw me through something I couldn’t have gone through on my own.”

win sisters Katherine (Kit), a leadership coach, and Diane, a therapist, have toured their fair share of European castles. At 69, they prefer more meaningful vacations, like planting a garden at a domestic violence shelter in Greece or teaching English to teenagers in Portugal. After Hurricane Katrina, the sisters, their husbands, and all four of their children converged on New Orleans to rescue displaced animals. “We embrace the opportunity to become part of the communities we serve,” says Kit. “And we’re creating lifelong memories!” adds Diane.

The sisters find opportunities through the nonprofit Global Volunteers (globalvolunteers .org). In 2015, they built a schoolyard wall in Lima, Peru, and the students dipped their hands in paint to decorate the concrete, as did Kit and Diane.

Knowing the wall is still there spurs them to volunteer again.

“We’re accustomed to traveling together, and we have the same visions and the same passion, so it makes sense,” says Diane.

Adds Kit: “It’s just more fun.”

A

n estimated one in four women can’t afford period products—and one in five girls has skipped school because of it.

Brooke and Breanna never knew period poverty existed until they saw students asking their mom, Adeyela, an English teacher at all-female schools first in Dubai and then in Miami, for pads and tampons. “Mom, why are they doing that?” Breanna asked. “They don’t have any,” Adeyela replied.

To celebrate turning 12, Brooke and Breanna stuffed canvas bags with menstrual products and other hygiene-related items and gave them to a group of low-income young women. Word spread, and now, two years later, the Bennetts’ nonprofit, Women in Training (WIT), packs and distributes 500 free WITKits each month.

Recently, Brooke, now 14, spoke at the Alabama State House to advocate having free pads and tampons offered at public schools statewide. The sisters’ goal: Be sure no girl misses school or activities because she’s having her period. With WITKits, “they don’t have to be embarrassed,” says Breanna.

e live in a unique part of Seattle—you can hear seagulls circling nearby and waves crashing on the shore just down the road. In the summer, we take full advantage of our beach proximity and bring dinner to the water.

1 2-lb salmon fillet, halved Kosher salt and pepper 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 4 pieces ½ small red onion, sliced 1 large lemon, sliced 1 small bunch tarragon

Heat wood-fire grill to mediumhigh (gas grill to medium). Place salmon, skin side down, on grill; season with 1⁄2 tsp each salt and pepper; then top with butter, red onion, lemon slices, and tarragon. Cook (covered if using gas grill) until salmon is barely opaque throughout, 14 to 17 min.

Grill green beans until tender and charred in parts, turning occasionally, then toss with white bean mixture. Serve with salmon.

4 Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hr. and up to 2 days.

6 Using fork, prick crackers all over and bake until fragrant and dark around edges, 12 to 14 min., rotating positions of sheets halfway through. Let cool completely on sheets.

If it’s been a while, add “Make an eye appointment” to your to-do list. Optometrists and ophthalmologists keep an eye out for vision-related issues like glaucoma and macular degeneration— and they often spot the earliest signs of heart trouble too. That’s because heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure and diabetes may cause changes to blood vessels in the retina and other parts of the eye that only an eye doctor can detect. Aim to get a comprehensive eye exam at least every two to four years between ages 40 and 54, every one to three years between ages 55 and 64, and every year or two once you turn 65.

1 In food processor, pulse cookies to form fine crumbs.

Add melted butter and pulse to combine. Transfer to 9-in. pie plate and press evenly on bottom and up side.

Refrigerate at least 20 min.

2 In large bowl, using electric mixer, beat cream cheese, coconut cream, and confectioners’ sugar on medium-high speed until smooth, 2 min. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add cream.

Increase speed to mediumhigh and beat until stiff peaks form, 3 min. Spread evenly into crust.

3 Working over bowl, push jam through finemesh strainer to create smooth paste, then dollop 6 spoonfuls around perimeter of pie. Drag wooden skewer through jam in a circle to create hearts.

1 Heat oven to 325°F. On small rimmed baking sheet, toss tomatillos, tomatoes, and garlic with oil and 1 tsp salt. Roast until very tender and beginning to brown, 25 to 35 min.

2 Meanwhile, cook chicken: Press Sauté on electric pressure cooker. Add oil, season chicken with ¼ tsp salt, and cook, skin side down, until browned, about 3 min. Flip chicken, stir in onion, and cook 1 min. more. Add broth, lock lid, and cook on High pressure (12.0) 25 min. Use quick release to release pressure and carefully open lid. Transfer chicken

to bowl and shred meat, discarding skin and bones; reserve liquid and onion.

3 For mole sauce, heat oil in large skillet (or wok) on medium-high. Add mushrooms, season with ¼ tsp salt, and cook, tossing, 4 min. Add harissa and cook, stirring, 2 min.

Stir in roasted-tomatillo mixture, ¼ cup reserved chicken cooking liquid, chocolate chips, tahini, and vinegar; simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 min. Add chicken and cook until heated through, adjusting seasoning if necessary.

4 In bowl, toss cabbage with lime juice, oil, soy sauce, and a pinch of salt; toss with ¼ cup cilantro.

Smash avocado with lime juice and a pinch of salt.

5 Spoon chicken mole into tortillas and top with avocado smash, cabbage slaw, and pickled onions. Sprinkle with remaining cilantro.

1 In large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.

2 In second large bowl, using electric mixer on medium speed, beat together butter and sugars until combined. Add egg yolks and vanilla and mix until just combined.

3 Reduce mixer speed to low and add flour mixture until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.

4 Transfer dough (using 2 Tbsp per cookie) to parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing mounds 2 in. apart. Freeze 30 min.

5 Heat oven to 350°F. Bake cookies, rotating positions of pans on racks halfway through, until golden brown around edges, 15 to 20 min. total.

Let cool 5 min. on pans, then slide parchment (and cookies) onto wire rack and let cool at least 5 min. more before serving.

1 Place dried mushrooms in bowl and top with ½ cup boiling water; let sit.

Meanwhile, heat oil in large, wide pan on medium. Add onion, carrots, and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 5 to 7 min.; stir in thyme.

2 Add rice and cook, stirring, 1 min. Add dried mushrooms and soaking

liquid (leaving behind any grit in bottom of bowl) and simmer until liquid has been absorbed.

3 Add broth, 1⁄2 cup at a time, and cook, stirring often until nearly absorbed before adding more, about 1 to 2 min. for each addition. Continue cooking until rice is just tender, 4 to 6 min. more.

4 Meanwhile, heat large skillet on medium. Add torn shiitake mushrooms and dry-fry, stirring often, until starting to soften, 4 to 6 min.

5 While mushrooms are cooking, in medium bowl, combine garlic, lemon juice, parsley, and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper.

Add cooked mushrooms and toss to combine.

6 When rice is done, stir in Parmesan. Adjust seasoning as desired and serve in bowls topped with mushroom mixture and chopped almonds.

1 Heat oven to 425°F. Line baking sheet with foil.

2 Place pork on prepared baking sheet and season with ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Brush with hoisin and roast until instant-read thermometer inserted in thickest part registers 145°F, 15 to 18 min. Let rest at least 5 min. before slicing.

3 Meanwhile, cook rice per pkg. directions; let cool slightly.

1 cup Forbidden (black) Rice or medium-grain rice 3 to 4 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chile paste) 1 Tbsp avocado oil or other neutral oil 1 red pepper, cut into 1-in. pieces 6 scallions, cut into 2-in. pieces, pale pieces halved lengthwise 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 12 oz napa cabbage, leaves cut into 2-in. pieces 1 bunch Broccolini, long stems thinly sliced and tops cut into large florets 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined ⅓ cup basil, roughly chopped, plus leaves for serving

1 Cook rice per pkg. directions.

2 Meanwhile, in bowl, whisk together gochujang and 2 cups warm water to dissolve.

3 Heat oil in large, straightsided saucepan on medium. Add pepper and cook, tossing, 3 min.

4 Increase heat to high, add scallions and garlic, and cook, stirring, 1 min. Add cabbage and cook, tossing, 1 min. Stir in gochujang broth and bring to a steady simmer.

5 Layer Broccolini on top of cabbage mixture, then scatter shrimp on top of that. Cover and cook 2 min. Flip shrimp and simmer, covered, until shrimp are opaque throughout and Broccolini is just tender, 1 to 2 min. more. Stir in basil and serve over rice; top with basil leaves if desired.

Add cider, 2½ cups water, and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until rice is tender, 15 to 17 min., adding cranberries during last 10 min. of cooking.

2 Meanwhile, heat remaining 2 Tbsp oil in large skillet on medium. Add onions and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are tender and beginning to brown, 18 to 20 min. Add chopped garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 1 to 2 min.

Stir in vinegar and parsley.

3 Add scallions and onion mixture to rice and toss to combine.
