Make a cool vase “The pineapple centerpieces stole the show,” says Liz Joy (@purejoyhome) of this party she threw for friends. You can elevate any meal by giving guests their own little cast-iron pots. “Even baked beans feel fancy in mini Dutch ovens,” says Elizabeth Van Lierde (@college_housewife). Try varying other elements, too: She served corn muffins on a pizza peel and used beer bottles as vases.

Go big on citrus Lemons, oranges, and grapefruits add a splash of color to this table by Amanda Gluck (@fashionablehostess). She halved some of the fruit to mix up the look, then pulled it all together with eucalyptus and lemon leaf garland. The finishing touch: leaf place cards pinned to fresh lemons.

Katrina Blair Sullivan (@thekatrinablair) dotted a natural runner with mini vases full of cheerful chamomile flowers and alstroemeria, then put pots of rosemary at each end of the table. “They smelled incredible!” she says. Glass lanterns from Walmart give the setting an elegant touch.

how how bad is it if your dog gets yard time but not so many walks? Dogs need excursions for the sensory experience. “They explore the world through their noses—a walk is like a ‘sniffari’— and they don’t get enough stimulation roaming around their everyday digs,” says Fanna Easter, chair of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers. Take a daily walk if possible, and change the route periodically.

how bad is it to leave outdoor pillows out all the time? “The only thing you should be ferrying in and out is a frosty beverage,” says our market director, Kate Doherty. Outdoor pillows are made to withstand moisture from rain, and the filling is resistant to mold. The colors might fade over time, but as Kate points out, that can be a good excuse to upgrade: “You may want a whole other look!”

how bad is it to claim a spot at the pool with a towel? Coming back within an hour is fine if it’s not too busy, says Thomas P. Farley, an etiquette maven in New York City. Think: a weekday morning at the community pool. During crowded times like weekends or holidays, or when a hotel is full, aim to return within half an hour. “Getting lunch is acceptable; playing a tennis match isn’t,” says Farley. And do you really want someone touching and moving your towel? Exactly.

how bad is it to leave sunscreen in the car? Sunscreens can’t take the heat. “High temperatures can break down ingredients that shield skin from harmful rays, making them ineffective,” says Henry W. Lim, MD, a dermatologist in Detroit, Michigan, who reviews formulas for The Skin Cancer Foundation. Sprays, sticks, and lotions are all susceptible. Better to be safe than sunburned and move the bottle to your handbag.

how bad is it to sneak kids onto rides when they’re too short? Safety experts are not on board with this. Half an inch might seem like nothing, but the difference could mean a loose restraint. This can lead to head and neck injuries when kids are bounced around, according to the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. To avoid a meltdown at the Whip-N-Whirl, check height rules in advance.

his past spring, a good 10% of all home buyers in America sealed the deal on their houses without so much as a walkthrough. The trend started as a pandemic necessity because open houses were out of the question, but it seems to be here to stay. “More and more people are relying on virtual tours with agents in today’s evercompetitive market,” says Jessica Lautz, Ph.D., vice president of demographics and behavioral insights for the National Association of Realtors. A family gathering place was homeowner Kara Cronk’s top priority, so she ordered this Thos. Moser cherry wood table before anything else. The wallpaper is by Pierre Frey.

hen Kara Cronk set out to make a new home for her kids after separating from her husband, she got lucky with an airy 1,300-square-foot house in the San Francisco, CA, neighborhood where they already lived. “The stuff I bought faced two tests,” says Kara. “Do I love it, and would it make me and the kids happy?” The answers were “yes” and “yes” when she saw a Thos. Moser trestle dining table, extendable to 120 inches. She pictured it as a place for post-soccer pizzas, birthday celebrations, and weekend breakfasts with waffles made from scratch. “I knew it would be the cornerstone of our home,” says Kara. Next, with help from designer Emilie Munroe, she tackled some smallish reno projects, including removing a fireplace in the living room to create more hangout space and turning an unfinished attic into a playroom. They blended colors, patterns, and art, embracing a fresh start...and any shade of pink Kara wanted.

entry Whether Kara’s coming or going, the house is a powerful reminder that her place reflects her taste. She chose a blush hue (Pale Petal by Benjamin Moore) for the door and gave herself flowers in the carved blue cabinet, from Anthropologie. The runner is Erin Gates by Momeni. 48 HGTV Magazine

A mix of textures resulted in a memorable gallery wall. The big textile framed in acrylic is from St. Frank.

attic morphed into an awesome hideout for the kids, topped off with dot decals from Urbanwalls and a disco ball. “When friends are over, all the kids head here, and the adults have quiet time,” says Kara. The hot spots: plump bean bag chairs from Crate & Barrel.

What’s more fun than putting together rooms that’ll delight your kids? It’s pure joy all around.

atlas’s room Kara had the Pottery Barn Kids bunk bed in mind for houseguests, but Kinsley has become a regular. After sleepovers, she and her bro get into earlya.m. car races on the rug from Serena & Lily. For a change of scenery, the kids head up the ladder to the playroom. “They like to build pulley systems to send their stuffies up and down,” Kara says.

kinsley’s room Detailed wallpaper, called Too Much Stuff (by Flat Vernacular), plays off Kinsley’s fondness for collecting. “Even as a small child, she’d drag a bag filled with random things everywhere,” says Kara. The teeny-tiny pattern contrasts with big chunks of color in the Anthropologie rug.

main bedroom “I love my room because it’s quieter than the rest of the house, but not monotone,” says Kara. An indigo window shade (made with fabric by Christopher Farr Cloth) and a cobalt bench from Wayfair offset softer blues in the wallpaper by Rebecca Atwood and shag rug by Lulu and Georgia. A warm, honey-colored rattan bedframe by Serena & Lily grounds the space.

playtime! Pink siding and a sunburst design in the gable set the tone for the family’s laid-back lifestyle. The living room and kitchen open to an expansive deck by Trex—a space that’s equally geared toward kiddie-pool dips and entertaining. The bar window swings out to let in the breeze.

Seanna and Matt Covell with Coco, 4, and Dylan, 5

eanna and Matt Covell spent their childhood summers in Ocean City, MD, eating French fries on the boardwalk and biking barefoot with friends. They wanted the same for their girls, so when this 1,000-square-foot bungalow—just two blocks from Matt’s parents’ place—came on the market, they snagged it. Matt, a builder and designer, took the lead on transforming the dilapidated 1960s house. He and his team gutted it, vaulted the ceilings, and installed white oak floors and shiplap throughout. “In a beach house, you can easily go overboard with the nautical theme,” says Matt. The Covells wanted a fresher vibe and layered in modern geometric tile, vintage surfer swag, and bright pops of color. “It’s a tiny house, and it didn’t take much to trick out every space,” Matt says. His daughters approve. “They get to wake up every morning in a funky paradise,” says Seanna, “then head down the street to get spoiled by their grandparents.”

pelican pop The Covells worked with a local spray paint artist to come up with the pelican plan, then let him go to it. Matt built the oak box to house the TV, with shelves for family photos and a retro skateboard to keep the screen from dominating the living room. The girls perch on the stools by TOV...when they’re not competing for the Anthropologie hand chair. The leafy sectional is from Lee Industries.

beachy woods The couple had planned to put a geometric reclaimed wood panel on the barstool side of the island but realized it would have more visual impact as a backsplash. “It’s the feature guests talk about most,” says Seanna. For the island, they used the same light oak that they chose for the floor, which made the space seem bigger. Also, says Matt, “we had leftovers and were trying to save money!”

surfer style When he’s not riding his custom Album surfboard, Matt hangs it in the dining area. “Honestly, there was no room anywhere else—and the colors fit our theme!” he says. He and Seanna display the girls’ art on a string with clothespins. A zebra pattern rug is Matt’s cheeky, nonbeachy addition. “I got it on a safari to Pottery Barn,” he says.

cozy quarters Dylan and Coco’s bedroom “turned out kind of like a cruise ship bunkroom,” says Seanna. The upper beds have boat-style railings; the bottom ones have rope-handled drawers for clothes. ature buffs Emily Johnson and Rahul Jampala were thrilled to find a home in a woodsy setting—but they were not so thrilled when they saw that their McLean, VA, place had a tiny 165-square-foot kitchen. He likes experimenting with savory dishes, she likes baking her great-grandma’s Swedish treats, and they wanted to be able to spread out. Partnering with designer Tanya Smith-Shiflett, they doubled the room’s size by expanding into a little-used dining room. They installed new cabinets and an island with plenty of storage, and chose design elements that reflect their surroundings. “The rustic look makes our kitchen ultra-usable,” says Emily. “We can beat it up a bit without hurting anything!”

Steve and Meghan Modrow

garden Indoor/outdoor living is second nature to Steve and Meghan Modrow, who both grew up in SoCal. Their house didn’t allow for that until they bumped out the kitchen and opened up the back with sliding doors and windows. Now they can fully appreciate the backyard retreat that Steve, a landscape designer, created with tropical plants (they winter in his warehouse), a pond, and stone and wood paths. Says Meghan, “It’s like a vacation right at home.”

For style with durability, the couple went with limestone pavers. That 12-foot-wide folding window above the counter (made by Sierra Pacific Windows) stays open, weather permitting. “We use it a good six months out of the year— 55 degrees feels great after a Minnesota winter,” says Steve. While he and Meghan regularly have people over, they also enjoy cooking and eating in the open air when it’s just the two of them.

Meghan’s collection of vintage Pyrex is pretty and handy for daily use. This Dekton counter by Cosentino is ideal for indoor/ outdoor use; it’s heat and UV resistant.

kitchen After the Modrows expanded the space, they updated it with a bright turquoise glass backsplash, sleek cabinets and pulls from IKEA, and cool vinyl sheeting by Atrafloor. “We picked the flowerlike pattern and customized the scale to get the graphic look we wanted,” says Steve.

The front got a redo, too! Steve and Meghan preserved the cottage look of the house so it would fit in with others in the neighborhood, but they updated the siding to board and batten and added a sleek metal portico. The fab new door, painted Hep Green by SherwinWilliams, complements the landscaping.

THE FUNKY BRICKWORK is kind of famous in the neighborhood, say homeowners David and Elizabeth Brewer. “We’ve run into people who were for that alone,” says David. TUDOR FEATURES such as half-timbering, multipane windows, and tall peaks along the roofline started appearing in American houses in the late 1800s; the style originated in England in the late 15th century. THE OAK FRONT DOOR, with charming strap hinges and leaded glass, is as old as the home itself. THAT VIBRANT LAWN wasn’t always so green.
