The thing I love most about paint is that as soon as you give something a fresh coat of color, it really feels like yours. It might be a piece of furniture that lived in someone else’s house or something new that’s never been painted. Either way, when you paint it, you make it your own. Give a room a fresh color and just like that, it has your personal stamp. That’s why I have no problem painting anything and everything in my home—floors, doors, furniture, light fixtures, patio furniture: You name it, I’ll paint it. (And, yes, that goes for highquality wood items too—even though this may make some furniture purists cringe!) When my husband and I moved into a smallish, 1,200-square-foot apartment, I thought my days of serious decorating were over. Then I spotted an adorable beadboard backsplash in your January/ February issue (“Our New 170-YearOld Kitchen”) and just had to copy the look. We had a sheet of beadboard cut to fit our backsplash and even painted it blue like the one you featured.

I can’t resist colorful kitchenware, so the January/February feature “50 Ways to Spend $100 (or a Lot Less!)” offered lots of eye candy. One item in particular that I’m looking forward to cooking with: the Lodge 6-quart Dutch oven in purple.

If you want healthy, bloom-packed plants, don’t deny them H2O, especially when you first put them in the ground. When a bulb or seedling goes into dry dirt, any moisture that’s inside the root ball will be sucked up by the surrounding soil. And bone-dry roots mean dead plants, says L.A. landscape designer Shirley Bovshow.

“All freshly planted flowers need at least a month of regular watering to establish themselves,” she says. Saturate the buds and the ground around a plant’s roots right after planting, then check the soil every few days. If you dig your finger into the soil and it doesn’t feel damp a few inches below the surface, water again.

Don’t worry too much about folding and stashing a drippy umbrella. “While it’s generally not a good idea to trap water in anything you wrap up, umbrellas are made of water-repellent fabric that won’t mold or mildew,” says Ann Headley, director of design and innovation at Totes. The only time you may run into trouble is if you’re using a cheapie drugstore buy, as some have a metal frame that can rust. Spring for a plated steel, aluminum, or fiberglass frame instead. Giving your umbrella a quick shake after you come in from the rain can help it stay in shape too.

Whatever food Goldie doesn’t eat will end up drifting around her bowl or aquarium. If those leftovers aren’t promptly cleaned out, when they decompose, they’ll release toxins, such as ammonia, into the water. This can cause water quality to go south quickly, which could sicken or even kill your fish, says Bill Wymard, a marine biologist at Aquarium Adventure, an aquatic store in Columbus, OH. To ensure that you’re giving your finned friend the right serving size, follow these steps two times a day: Over a few minutes, place tiny pinches of food into the bowl, pausing to make sure everything is eaten before adding more. The flakes shouldn’t make it to the bottom of the bowl. If they do, you’re dishing out too much.

…to pretreat a stain, then not wash it right away?

Yes, you want to act quickly to get a sauce splatter out of a shirt. But if you don’t have time to wash or at least rinse it right after pretreating, hold off. When stain-blasting products are left on for longer than the time recommended on the label, they can discolor fabric, says Clorox senior scientist Mary Gagliardi, a.k.a. Dr. Laundry. That’s why you should always follow the pretreater’s guidelines—which typically advise letting the product sit for five to 10 minutes, then washing. If you want to get a jump-start on a stain and you’re not near your washer, dab at the spot with liquid dish soap, then rinse.

2 Shop beekman1802.com. I’m a big fan of the Beekman Boys, two guys who have a farm and store in New York plus an online shop that sells everything from furniture to soap. Most of the products are handcrafted by the men or fellow artisans, and they’re excellent quality.

3 Lighten up my home fragrance. People don’t often think about how a room smells, but it’s important! During cooler months, I like strong, woodsy scents, but in spring, I go for hints of linen, lemongrass, lavender, and mint, like this mint moss candle ($28, thompsonferrier.com).

4 Fluff up throw pillows. If a decorative pillow doesn’t come with a down feather insert, I buy one from a store like Crate & Barrel. The insert is comfier to lean against, and it makes the pillow look all the plusher.

5 Dust ceiling fans. Because they’re up high, it’s easy to let dust accumulate on blades. Before I turn any fans on for the season, I wipe them down with a microfiber duster. The Swiffer 360° Duster has an extendable handle—it’s great because I don’t need to climb a ladder to use it.

lily of the valley Known for its tiny, bellshaped white flowers, lily of the valley is a sweet-smelling plant that blooms in early spring. It works well as a cut flower and ground cover.

baking soda Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a top-notch leavening agent, cleaner, and deodorizer. If a recipe includes baking soda, it will also probably call for an acid, such as buttermilk or lemon juice, to activate the baking soda.

brass Brass, made of copper and zinc, is a soft metal that has a goldlike shine when polished. Big in the blingedout ’80s, it’s now usually seen with a duller, darker patina. It’s popular for doorknobs, bed frames, and keys.

vs. lily A lily has showy—and often super-fragrant—blossoms with six petals. It flowers from June through August in a variety of colors, including white, red, orange, and yellow.

vs. baking powder Baking powder is also a leavening agent, only it has the acid already built in. It’s not as hardworking around the house, though. It can help cakes and biscuits rise, but it won’t zap odors or unclog a drain.

vs. bronze Harder than iron and resistant to corrosion, bronze is usually chemically treated to look aged. Made of copper and tin, it’s pricier than brass and mainly used for industrial welding, pipe fittings, and door hardware.

With crevices designed to retain moisture, cellulose sponges are ideal breeding grounds for germs—especially when they’re put away wet in a dark undersink cabinet. To prevent bacteria buildup, wring out excess water, and pop the sponge in a countertop holder with plenty of air circulation.

350 square feet (slightly smaller than the size of the average family room), but you’ll need almost double that if you’re applying two coats –– for example, if you’re painting over a dark color and don’t use primer. You’ll also likely need an extra coat of paint for textured surfaces, such as brick. Another reason to get more than you think you’ll need: The exact color of paint can vary if it’s mixed at different times, so the shade you buy this Saturday might be slightly different from the same shade you buy a few days later when you realize you’re short.

I like this in kitchens—it’s refreshing but not too loud.

and-primer in one. But if you’re buying regular old paint, you’ll get better results if you apply a coat of primer before adding color. Primer, a light-color base coat, smooths and seals walls, blocking future stains and laying the foundation for a streak-free paint job, especially on raw wood, drywall, metal, and masonry. In fact, for these surfaces, many pros prefer primer over paint-and-primer in one because combo formulas can cost more and often require two coats anyway. Have primer tinted gray or the color of your topcoat if you’re making drastic color changes –– like going from red walls to light blue ones–– to better hide the old hue.

GREEN Green is the color people disagree about most, say color experts. So while you may see this paint swatch as green, others may see it as yellow-green or even yellow. Benjamin Moore calls the color Eccentric Lime—it’s one of the 683 greens the company offers.

ORANGE Touch-ups to the Golden Gate Bridge reportedly require 5,000 to 10,000 gallons annually of Golden Gate Bridge International Orange paint (a custom color currently made by Sherwin-Williams). The amount varies each year depending on how quickly the air’s high salt content corrodes the bridge’s steel.

If you have more than a quart left, store the paint in its can in a cool, dry spot where temps won’t dip below freezing.

Wipe the can’s rim, then cover its mouth with plastic wrap, tap down the lid with a hammer or mallet, and stow upright. If you have less than a quart, decant it into a small airtight container, like a glass jar. Label the lid with the date and the room(s) where you used it. Stored latex paint can last up to 10 years.

While oil paint is typically considered hazardous household waste and must be dropped off at a waste-handling facility, latex paint can often be left curbside. Before you get rid of it, mix in sand or kitty litter. Once it dries out, put the can with your trash or recycling.

Just check your community’s disposal guidelines—some areas want you to bring latex to drop-off sites, too. For a list of sites by state, go to paintcare.org.

Stuck with a gallon or more of paint you can’t use? Try reaching out to an organization such as a community theater group, a high school drama department, or your nearest location of Habitat for Humanity’s retail store, ReStore. Or place an ad on Craigslist or freecycle.org. If that doesn’t get any takers, register with netpaint.org, which will notify you when a nearby group requests free paint.

Splatter-paint an unused canvas drop cloth (about $9), then use it to upholster a chair.

1. Cut a 4-foot-by-12-foot canvas drop cloth in half widthwise. Place both pieces over a larger plastic tarp or another drop cloth.

2. Mix a little water into three separate colors of latex paint so they’re slightly diluted. Dip your fingers into one color at a time, and flick them onto the canvas. This gives you the most control, but if you don’t want to get your hands dirty, use the same technique with wooden paint stirrers. Let dry.

3. Bring the canvas and chair to a professional upholsterer. To save a little money, you can rip off the old fabric and paint the frame yourself.

omfort was the top priority when Orange and Eial Girtz decorated the compact living room of their 1938 home in Port Washington, NY, seven years ago. Wanting the space to be a veg-out zone for TV watching and lounging, Orange crowded it with a supersized sofa, a mammoth chair-and-a-half, and a hulking coffee table. While the nap-ready pieces encouraged relaxing, they swallowed up the room –– and occasionally guests. “I once had to save a pregnant friend who got trapped in the sofa,” admits Orange. Eager to transition the space into a sophisticated entertaining spot (TV viewing is now done in the family room and basement), Orange was ready for smaller-scale furniture, patterns, and colors.

The bold results have wowed visitors –– “They can’t believe it’s the same room,” she says –– and made weekend socializing easier. “No one is falling into the couch anymore.”

As you wind your way along the gently curving walkway that leads to Emily and Patrick McCarthy’s 1980s ranch house in Savannah, GA, it’s hard not to notice the front door. Painted a fiesta-ready orange red (Piñata by Benjamin Moore), it’s an unsubtle hint that what’s inside this home near the saltwater marshes isn’t going to be typical. While Patrick’s born-andbred-in-Savannah style is pretty much in sync with what’s popular locally – – “ He’s more straightlaced than I am,” says Emily – – she gravitates toward bold decor and was determined to bring some va-va-voom to the 2,700-square-foot house. To ensure her funloving exuberance and Patrick’s buttoned-up traditionalism wouldn’t turn into clashing chaos, she teamed with designer Kathryn Myrick to create a cohesive look out of family heirlooms, eclectic accessories, and break-therules pattern mixing. But Emily admits it wasn’t always easy going. “I had to tone down the animal prints,” she says. “It’s a compromise, but that’s what marriage is all about.”

dining room With its hand-painted gold walls and touches of bright persimmon, the dining room “shocked Patrick, but I have to push him out of his comfort zone,” says Emily. To loosen up the formal 1980s dining set inherited from his family and the Parsons chairs from her grandmother, Emily added slipcovers: two sewn from a graphic Kelly Wearstler fabric and four in monogrammed white denim.

The orange-and-white window shades were made with cotton fabric from Jo-Ann Fabrics.

screened porch The 500-square-foot screened porch has built-in bench seating around the perimeter and views of the backyard’s pond. It’s so large, it needed to be subdivided into different areas. The “lounge” features an ottoman with a white denim slipcover, and secondhand armchairs and a faux-bamboo sofa that were lacquered black. The dining spot has a teak table from Patrick’s parents, more vintage dining chairs, and a snappy black-andwhite-striped tablecloth made with Sunbrella fabric.

Obsessed with mid-centurymodern design, this couple found fresh ways to work it into every corner of their Arizona home.

dining room “You don’t come across something like it very often,” says Ryan of the 5-foot-diameter mirror with a thick brass frame that brightens the dining area. It hangs against grass cloth wallpaper, a freshlooking foil to the hefty, live-edge oak dining table. The circa-1950s chairs are by mid-century-modern furniture designer Allan Gould.

They just needed new seat cushions, so the Durkins had some made in hunter green leather.

ylie and Ryan Durkin take their fondness for vintage stuff seriously. Nearly everything in their 1950 Phoenix, AZ, home –– down to the dishes –– is older than the couple themselves. Their favorite pieces are mid-century modern, a style they love so much, they opened a furniture shop devoted to the era called Modern Manor. “The quality and the simple, geometric shapes can’t be matched,” says Ryan, who often cherry-picks the store’s inventory for one-of-a-kind pieces he can use at home. As a result, the Durkins’ four-bedroom place –– which they bought and renovated in 2012 –– features a constantly rotating collection of droolworthy, history-packed finds, from iconic bucket chairs designed by Eames to an antique cabinet with dozens of little built-in cubbies. “We pretty much cringe if we have to buy something that’s brand-new,” says Ryan. Adds Kylie, “Everything in this house has a story behind it.”

living room The house’s original etched concrete walls, exposed beams, and copper-hooded fireplace give it a distinctly retro look. Ryan had the 1980s sofa reupholstered in tufted leather and was so happy with it, he had an ottoman built to match. To balance out such bulky pieces, he added a leggy 1960s mosaic-top coffee table. One of the couple’s favorite vintage-market finds is the road sign from when Phoenix had just 700,000 residents (today it’s more than double that). The shaggy rug is from HomeGoods, one of the few spots where the couple likes to buy new things.

The kitchen needed new cabinets and tile, but we chose ones with that vintage look we love.

kitchen The open layout of the kitchen— which Kylie and Ryan added a pantry to last year—gives them plenty of room to entertain guests and cook for their sons, Sawyer, 3, and baby River. Beveled edges put a fun twist on classic subway tiles, which line every wall and even the range hood. The one exception: an inset over the sink (opposite), which features patterned cement squares from cementtileshop.com.

Not ones to go for matching baby-furniture sets, the Durkins outfitted River’s bedroom with a 1960s teak dresser and an Eero Saarinen–designed Womb chair with a matching footstool. The teepee—which typically serves as big brother Sawyer’s hiding spot—was snagged at an estate sale.

sawyer’s room For a bit of space age–inspired playfulness, the Durkins lined a nook with “wall flats,” inexpensive 3-D panels from inhabitliving.com. A daybed from Monte Design and a vintage campaign dresser in crisp white look grown-up enough that Kylie expects Sawyer will be able to use them for the next decade. The swirly rug is from Marshalls.

The bright green lamp base is another vintage gem—it was made by the Laurel Lamp Company in the ’50s or ’60s.

patio With its sleek funnel shape, the enameled Preway fireplace looks straight out of Mad Men. Originally meant for indoor use, it now serves as the patio’s centerpiece. The woven wrought-iron seating is all by mid-century-modern designer Russell Woodard. Sunbrella cushions boost its weather- and kid-friendliness.

tips for buying vintage The Durkins’ best hints, gleaned from years in the biz. ● Get your info from estate sales and auction houses. To learn how to identify an authentic mid-century-modern piece, don’t just surf the Web for tips. Visit estate sales to find real-life examples you can study. Or supplement online research with catalogs from auction houses known for this style of furniture, such as Wright (wright20.com) and Rago (ragoarts.com). ● Dinged wood is OK; cracked Formica is not. You can usually sand down nicks in wood or even lacquer over worn wood veneer. However, Formica (another popular mid-century-modern material) is pricey to repair. It’s also difficult to paint over, so avoid it if it’s in rough condition. ● Don’t pay full price. While the prices at the start of an estate sale are usually firm, you can often negotiate by the end of the day.

Shopping at an antiques mall or a vintage store? Almost all sellers will automatically drop the price by 10% if you ask.

here were no budget-busting revisions or agonized secondguessing when Penelope before and Keith Boettiger remodeled the dated kitchen of their 1980s home in Austin, TX. The secret to their stress-free redo: The couple had already tackled three major kitchen makeovers in the past 12 years as they relocated for Keith’s job. With knowhow gained from overhauling cook spaces in Maine, Maryland, and North Carolina, the pair orchestrated a kitchen transformation with minimum fuss.

Penelope shares what they learned from the family’s latest – – but definitely not last –– renovation.

Undercabinet lights are nonnegotiable.

Penelope always installs below-cabinet lights to illuminate counters. “The extra lights also show off the backsplash,” she says.

Don’t paint all the cabinets the same color.

“We wanted to do two different colors for the cabinets—and also do some frosted doors—so it’s not just row after row of sameness,” says Penelope. For this reno, they chose a combo of white and gray paints (Ceiling Bright White and Cityscape, both Sherwin-Williams).

FOR THE MUFFINS 2¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon Café Bustelo instant coffee 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

● Preheat the oven to 350ºF, and line muffin tins with 18 paper baking cups. ● Make the streusel: Combine the flour, brown sugar, butter, and instant coffee in a medium bowl. Using your fingers or a fork, work the butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form. Stir in walnuts until evenly distributed; set aside. ● Make the muffins: Whisk the flour, instant coffee, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl; set aside. ● Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl with a mixer until fluffy, about 1 minute. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well, then beat in the vegetable oil and sour cream until combined. Add the muffin flour mixture, and beat until just incorporated.

Sprinkle the tops with the remaining streusel. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool in the tins for 5 minutes, then transfer the muffins to a rack to cool completely. ● Make the glaze: Whisk confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract in a medium bowl. Add water or milk and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled muffins and let sit for at least 1 hour to set. ● Place

each muffin in a cupcake wrapper before serving.

novice lettuce This green will happily grow just about anywhere with afternoon shade. In early spring, buy seedlings at the nursery. Plant four inches apart, and harvest often: Pick the outer leaves as soon as they reach four to five inches long. Keep soil moist, not drenched, and in a few weeks, the inner leaves will be ready, too.

string beans This early summer crop comes in green, yellow, and purple. Wait until temps reach 60°F to plant. Then place the seeds six inches apart, in rows about two feet apart. Once flowers appear, check for beans daily—they’re most tender when no thicker than a pencil.

Bonus: They don’t usually have pest problems.

peppers Both sweet bell peppers and hot chile peppers are fairly low-fuss, as long as you plant seedlings in summer in soil boosted with composted manure. Cover with black plastic mulch, and water when soil is dry one to two inches below the surface. If plants get topheavy with fruit, tie the main stems to stakes.

Carrots take some babying. In late spring turn over the top foot of soil, then sow the tiny seeds one to two inches apart in rows. Cover with a thin layer of soil, and keep damp until they sprout, about two to three weeks. Pull from the ground when the foliage looks lush and the tops of the roots poke above the soil.

advanced beets For the biggest beets, plant seeds in late spring in deeply dug soil, and vigilantly remove weeds, as beets don’t like competition. Each seed should produce a couple of seedlings.

When leaves are a few inches tall, pull some seedlings so there are two to four inches between plants. Harvest them at any size.

broccoli Broccoli isn’t too hard to grow if you plant a quick-to-mature variety in cool, sunny weather.

Plant seedlings 18 inches apart, and fertilize every few weeks. Harvest when the main head is five to seven inches across. To deter pests, spray with an organic pesticide or top with fabric row cover (sheets of polypropylene).

kale Easy to grow from seed and tolerant of the cold, kale sprouts in a few days. In cool spring soil, plant seeds in broad swaths. Snip baby leaves for salads once they’re three to four inches long. Harvest mature leaves—which are best for cooking—when they’re 10 to 12 inches long, starting with those lowest on the stalk.

summer squash These quick growers include pattypan squash and zucchini. Plant the seeds in warm soil with full sun, leaving three square feet per plant.

Water deeply once a week, but don’t wet the leaves, which can cause powdery mildew. You should see squash in about six weeks. Pick them daily—smaller squash taste sweeter.

inte mediate cherry tomatoes cucumbers Heat-loving cukes grow quickly on short vines that can be left to spread on mulched soil, but they do best trained up a trellis or attached to a fence. Grow them from seeds or seedlings starting in summer, and water the roots deeply one to two times a week. Don’t wet the leaves, which can cause powdery mildew.

The easiest tomatoes to grow, these come in dwarf varieties for pots; larger varieties will need staking in the garden. Plant seedlings in soil mixed with composted manure and organic fertilizer, then cover with black plastic mulch. Water at the roots and harvest once the fruits turn red.

brussels sprouts Brussels sprouts take 100 days to mature, but if you have patience, you’ll get fresh veggies in late fall. Plant seedlings two feet apart in compost-enriched soil in late spring. Tie the thick stalks to wooden stakes in mid-summer.

Sprouts can attract pests, so they benefit from fabric row cover or spraying.

asparagus While you won’t get many spears the first year or two, you’ll enjoy plenty in year three and beyond. Plant roots, called crowns, with fertilizer in a 12-inch-deep trench in a sunny spot. Mulch beds with hay and keep them weeded and watered. You’ll have asparagus for four to eight weeks in early spring.

SCIENTIFIC NAME

COMMON NAME

Every plant has a scientific name. The first part is Latin and usually italicized on the tag. It describes the genus, or group, the plant belongs to and its species. The scientific name also includes the cultivar, which is in single quote marks and classifies the plant even further in terms of color and leaf and petal shape.

This is what the plant is generally called. If you want a certain color or shape, you’ll need more specifics.

HARDINESS ZONE These numbers let you know the region a plant grows best in. Zones are established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture based on temperatures. You can still grow plants that aren’t in your hardiness zone, but you’ll have to treat them as annuals. To find your zone, go to garden.org/zipzone.

MATURE HEIGHT & SPREAD This is the maximum height and width the plant is likely to reach when fully grown.

WATER NEEDS & ANIMAL RESISTANCE

SUN EXPOSURE

If a tag doesn’t say how often to water the plant, look for the number of raindrops. One means you should let soil dry out between waterings. Two means soil should be dry an inch below the surface. Three means you should keep soil moist constantly. An icon with a crossed-out rabbit or deer, like this one, means that animal won’t nibble the plant.

You’ll see this info written out or as an icon. When a tag indicates a plant needs full sun, it should get at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Partial sun/shade, shown here, means it needs about half that amount. If a tag says a plant needs full shade, it should get less than three hours of sun per day.
